What makes a great horror soundtrack for you? Is it a matter of the artists playing & select songs on the soundtrack (like Shocker) or more the feeling the eerie music gives you as you watch the film?
What say you? I would have to say for me it's between The Exorcist & Suspiria. Pretty creepy stuff.

It's definitely eerie music for me rather than specific artists or songs, as I like movies with lots of atmosphere. To me, the Exorcist is the ultimate, a score one can never forget, and one with many imitators, for good and ill.

My favorite horror scores are Suspiria. Which I think is pretty much unrivaled. Following very close would be The Exorcist and The Omen with many other honorable mentions.

I have a real big place in my heart for the score of "Final Destination".
One of the most effective eerie, ominous scores I've heard.

You aint changed a bit. In a good way. But you know I love FD as well.
Some others I have: Carnival Of Souls (my fav. horror movie of all time), Silent Hill (love it!), pretty much any Carpenter, The Goblins on pretty much any Argento, Requeim for a Dream, Psycho of course, and as I said before MANY MORE.
Creepy original scores work the best though. I have no prob with straight songs from bands recorded into the film.

Halloween 2 is probably my fave. It has creepy music like the original with a more electronic sound. The Thing and The Fog also have great scores. Phantasm has a good score as well.

And great call on "Silent Hill". I goshdarn love that movie's score, even if it's not original.

I prefer original scores over a bunch of "songs inspired by the movie" but there's still massive fun to be had from certain soundtracks, such as THE LOST BOYS. Anything CARPENTER does is simply terrific. One of the main reasons I love HALLOWEEN 3:SEASON OF THE WITCH is the ominous, brooding score. I like orchestral sounds, strings etc, they're quite effective but I also dig simple electronic sounds, synthesizers and shit they used in the 80's.
Get your casio keyboard out boys - let's jam! :D

Amityville II The Possession sountrack is a better version of the first movies score in my opinion, creepy. And Pet Sematary has similarly eerie music. Suspiria and House By The Cemetery had great music too.

Since this doesn't exempt unoriginal music, The Shining.

Wow! I am blown away. I had not really checked back on this thread and I have to say THANKS for all the tremendous recommendations. I am attempting to "break into" film soundtrack involvement and these suggestions will be studied and are VERY appreciated.

Well, tricky. Let me put it this way. I have over 500 tracks of official Silent Hill nature among scores, soundtracks, songs, recompositions; that, plus a few dozen remixes and two unofficial versions of the movie score.
So there's a lot.
If you're less of a nerd than me (which no one is), and are just interested in good old fashioned "Official Soundtracks", check out Silent Hill Media (http://shm.silenthillfever.com/), which has many, many songs for you to download.

And another good score absolutely belongs to (at least the opening track) Creepshow.
Cant forget the theme to Tales From The Crpyt, although I dont find it creepy. But still AWESOME!

Can I say From Dusk Till Dawn? Sure I can... it kicks ass babies!
In terms of "real" orchestral and original music nothing beats Halloween, The Excorcist, or The Omen.
In terms of licensed music from real bands; Bride Of Chucky, The Devil's Rejects, and Shocker.

Anything from Goblin, Tourist Trap, Ghost Story, The Fog, The Omen, Hellraiser 1, 2 and Nightmare 2 all by Christopher Young are great. I could go on and on.

Have to agree with all of these, but I'd add in "The Lost Boys" and "House of 1000 Corpses" soundtracks too.
OOOPS! I forgot to add in "Interview with the Vampire". Haunting score and one great remake of "Sympathy for the Devil" by GnR!

Gotta go with the main theme music in Psycho, Jaws, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street and Paranoia Prima by Ennio Morricone from Death Proof.
As far as songs go, I loved The Devil's Rejects soundtrack. I am a huge fan of classic rock, so I really enjoyed the music from the film.
