View Full Version : 2007: Worst Year For Horror in a while

I have to say that so far this year has been very underwhelming for horror. I haven't seen Hatchet yet, which is one I'm sure I will enjoy, but most of the big films this year have been either very terrible or disappointing. Planet Terror, The Host, and Behind The Mask are the only ones I've really enjoyed. I still need to see Bug, 1408, Mr. Brooks, Severance, and 28 Weeks Later though, so maybe those will improve my thoughts.
Their's been:
Halloween (Hated it)
The Hitcher (Hated it)
Hills Have Eyes 2 (Hated It)
Death Proof (Sucked ass)
Hannibal Rising (Meh)
Hostel 2 (Meh)
The Messangers (Totally generic and by the numbers)
Dead Silence (Not memorable at all)
Disturbia (Generic, but enjoyable. Total popcorn film, but nothing mindblowing)
Vacancy (Ditto)
And I still haven't mentioned because I haven't seen cause they look terrible:
Blood And Chocolate
Skinwalkers
The Reaping
Primeval
Premonition
The Invasion
The Invisible
I Know Who Killed Me
Captivity
Hopefully, in the next 4 months we get that awesome film but nothing looks truly amazing. But, so far this has been the worst year for horror since the 90's. Maybe, that underground gem will come soon.

From what I've seen this year:
Hostel 2 - 10/10
Hills Have Eyes 2 - 6/10
Grindhouse - 10/10
Mr. Books - 9/10
Halloween - 8/10
The Host - 8/10
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernan - 8/10
Hatchet - 8/10
It's been a pretty good year. I need to see a lot though before I can make any formal conclusions myself.

Definitely agree.
-Hostel: Part 2 - 5/10.
-The Hills Have Eyes 2 - 4/10.
-The Messengers - 4/10.
-Primeval - 4/10.
-Prey - 4/10.
If it wasn't for "28 Weeks Later" (10/10) kicking all the ass in the world, there'd be nothing worth it that I've seen.

I almost agree with you. I like the fact that there was a lot of horror released, but just not enough TRUE horror.
Overall, Planet Terror, The Host and Bug more than made up for most of the crap. The only one I really HATED, was The Hitcher. I totally dug Hostel 2, so that puts me in a rare group. I thought, like you, Disturbia and Vacancy were good. They delivered on what they promised. No ground broken, but still entertaining. The Reaping was actually pretty good... cept the ending, and Hilary "I'm not a boy" Swank. I've yet to see 1408 (DVD out in Oct).
But pretty much yea, it was a pretty sub-par year, but in reality, horror hasn't been huge any year. Every year's got a few great flicks, then a bunch of PG13 letdowns. This year had some pleasant surprises... Behind The Mask and Bug... and some major letdowns... Dead Silence and Hills Have Eyes 2, so it really kept on par with all the "standard" fair.

Those two are both really good and I forgot about them. Neither are technically horror, IMO. Wind Chill is a solid romance film with ghosts, and Zodiac is a very intense thriller.

Look man atleast horror films are being made and released theatrically now whereas years ago they werent. Why do people keep bitching? (A.) There is always a great indie scene and a Hollywod system that occasionaly gets it right. (B.) Horrors at the best its been in a while, no 70s or 80s but great.

Foreign horror movies like The Host, La Puerta del Espanto, Cuento de Navidad and Pan's Labyrinth were the best this year. I'm waiting for 30 Days of Night, The Mist and I Am Legend.

The best movie I've seen this year isn't a horror film.

I really liked Zodiac but was it a horror film? It was sort of a detective film.
I don't think it really counts.
I don't think "I know who Killed Me" counts either. I think that counts as a drama maybe. But I think either way it should be avoided.
I am optimistic about Resident Evil 3. It could go either way. 1 and 2 were REALLY good considering they are based on a game.
Not a fan of games turned into movies. I was ready to gouge my eyes out in the middle of Final Fantasy - The BS Within.

I guess it isn't a horror film per say. But, it did have at least 5 sequences that were among the creepiest and most intense scenes to appear in the movies in quite a while. If Silence Of The Lambs, Henry:POASK, and Se7en count as horror flicks, than so should Zodiac.

I did not mean to offend. I went and saw it with very big expectations. In my mind they were not met.
I thought it was creepy and very scary but the murders were over and the movie continued for like another hour. I felt at the end that the point of it was not the killer but the finding of the killer. Jake's character was the focus more than the Zodiac! I thought that was a very clever way of going about the whole thing.
If Silence Of The Lambs, Henry:POASK, and Se7en count as horror flicks, than so should Zodiac.
I think the movies you mentioned are right on that border between horror and something else. Esp. Silence.
We are kinda getting into peoples heads and into maybe Thriller category.
I guess I am derailiing this thread though because waht I should be discussing is wther 2007 will be a cruddy or fine year for horror.
My feeling is that overall Horror in 2007 is more legitmate than ever. Not legitimate as in the quality is better than ever but legitimate as in more money to be made than in recent memory.
This is why we keep seeing remakes. When the posiibility for moneymaking increases the creativity I think suffers.

28 Weeks Later is shaping up to be my number one nomination for horror film of the year. I also enjoyed the following horror films: Hatchet, Wind Chills, Isolation, Grindhouse, 1408, The Last Winter, Black Sheep, Fido, Halloween (workprint).
I hated Hostel 2, Wrong Turn 2 (good kills but no suspense). The Marsh.
By the way my absolute fav film of the year regardless of genre is Zodiac.

a rather mediocre year with Grindhouse, Leslie Vernon and some English pix as the better movies and Hills have eyes 2 and Hitcher as the worst in years...
I havenīt seen 1408, Wrong turn 2 and iīm Bruce but looking forward to those...
I think it's the beginning of the end for horror, but not for the masses.
One of the reasons that the Scream-ripoff era died was because people stopped supporting the films. Now that horror fans and insipid movie-goers alike are supporting remakes, the trend of these and other lackluster films will probably continue.

How in the name of all that is intelligently discernible could someone actually get into Behind The Mask (it's a frigging comedy!) and not get into Dead Silence? What has happened to people's brains? Am I missing something here?

Is it weird that I found Dead Silence to be funnier than Behind The Mask?
I thought it was goofy as fuck when it wasn't supposed to be.

Yep, it is extremely weird. If you you realize it wasn't "supposed to be" it could not have really seemed "goofy as fuck" unless you were drunk when you watched it.
could you do yourself a slight bit more justice with respect to defining your "generic" (which is a load of horse shit based on the word's true definition) and "goofy" terms.
Another thing I am wondering about is mentioning Zodiac (basically a docu-drama) in a Horror thread.
Jaws or Primeval are also NOT horror

What is and what isn't Horror can be defined as different to other people. I consider a lot of films to be horror that no one else does. To me, disturbing morality tales like Requiem For A Dream and Oldboy are considered horror. I thought Jaws was a good monster movie, so it would be horror to me. Primeval wasn't really horror though. It turned into a bad version of Blood Diamond at one point.
Something about a floating ghostly old woman makes me laugh. The dolls were creepy though. I thought Dead Silence was decent enough, just kind of disappointing. Leslie Vernon owned it.
I thought Blood And Chocolate was generic because it was no different than any of the newer werewolf films and it looked like a Highlander movie with wolves. Shooter was a poorly done action film, that bored the shit out of me. Pathfinder had some okay battles, and a neat setting, and nothing else was memorable about it. That's why I find those generic. You can disagree with me, I don't care.
Hatchet pretty much upped this year to okay for me. I'm seeing Black Sheep tonight, and that should be fun as well.

I've enjoyed...
1408 9/10
Severance 7/10
Grindhouse 8/10(only part horror film, but I guess it counts)
I am anticipating...
30 days of night
Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem
I missed and need to see...
28 Weeks later
Sunshine, (although I consider this to be more of a sci-fi film)
And...The meh and crap films were...
The Host 5/10...every time I watch this film I lower the score...so boring, generic, and completely tensionless with tiny splashes of humor. I really don't know why everyone loves it so much...
Dead Silence 5/10...one really dumb twist and a set of stupid characters...

I don't get the hate for The Hitcher? Yes, the original is better, granted. The Hitcher is a pretty good film IMHO, Sean Bean and Sophia Bush were both fantastic in their roles and i've seen much worse this year.
The worst for me would be Hostel 2, I hated the stupidity of the three girls.

Because you're being an immature ass about it? I think a lot of people don't have a problem with a differing opinion, just when the other person says it in a way which implies a false superiority.

I can tell you why the hate for the remake of The Hitcher...
Did did everything that was good in the original exactly the opposit way...
There wasnīt any exciting scenes for us who have seen the original...
The Carachter of Halsey was just a whinyman and as usual they put a teen TV serie actress in the lead with a cute face to sell it, but it was "little miss goody-two-shoes" all the way, while in the original movie the leads character became darker and darker during the movie...
I wonīt go into detailes why I loathed this movie (maybe as the same reason as I praise the original)
I really tried to look at it in a fresh way, but the copied and pasted the original but changed all that was important from the original and made it the TV movie of the week...)
Frank the Tank
10-14-2007, 04:34 PM
I understand that they were trying for something different with The Hitcher remake, but making it a couple instead of just one person totally fucks up the concept. The idea of being alone with some fucked up psycho stalking you is pretty frightening. With another person in their, it made it less belivable as the girl could've distracted Ryder while Halsey knocks him out or something.
Then there's the take on the Mack Truck incident where they add in a shot of really fake CGI gore when it definately wasn't needed. The best part of the original is that it wasn't really gore and the gore they did show was built up so well and showed so little that it made the simple sceens seem a lot more violent.
