um.....
What the fuck happened to World-wide releases? It's like if it's not a comedy with a big actor in it, it's limited...
I hate it so much... Every movie that looks different than every other movie out there, I can't see, cuz my cities not big enough..
The Ten, The Nines, Juno, Into the Wild, Across the Universe.
Theres many ore but thats all I could think of.
Just...WHat the hell?

I agree, though the problem isn't as severe for me. There's an art theater or two around here, and if I decide that it's urgent enough, I can go in to NYC. But nonetheless, it's a generally annoying and unnecessary practice.

I agree with the rant, but I can see why the studios do this.

While, I completely agree that movies SHOULD be released nationwide/worldwide, it just wouldnt work for some. The high art type of films, or maybe even indie, just don't spark intereste in the GENERAL, keyword, GENERAL public. People wanna escape so they go see the latest big budget blockbuster. This is why there are arthouse movie theatres that play all these limited releases. I bet one even in your area might play. Check and see.

Its about money having worked for a theatre and understanding how things work the majority of smaller films don't bring in the crowds to justify bringing them to town. And once a town or theatre chain has proven that smaller films won't work the studios won't send them movies anymore.

We have a pretty good theatre chain and owner that tries to bring more small films to town and has even turned one of the theatres into somewhat of an art house. But anytime you go to these movies there is like 10 people in the theatre max, when a movie like say Halloween thats been out for weeks can fill more seats. Its hard to justify taking up theatre space and showtimes for films that don't do well and I know the theatre owner has to pull teeth every single time he gets us a smaller film as the studios just don't want to send them to smaller towns and venues.

The general public is to blame most of the time, the people who will pack theatres to see norbit but will avoid movies like Rescue Dawn (which lasted exactly 1 week in my town while norbit lasted months)

I believe this thread correlates to the other thread regarding taste and intelligence of films. I hate to say it, but the majority of this country are dumb people. They voted twice for a man whose done nothing but dig us deeper in an isolating trench from the rest of the world. So yes, I do believe intellect can play a part in the deciding factor of going to see a film.

It's just like with music... the biggest records out come off as if they're written by toddlers who have no talent in songwriting or performing. It's very pathetic when a song like "Lean like a Cholo" or "Delilah" are big hits on either a hip-hop station or rock station. I think they're a disgrace to the genre and the fact that people request it is a damn shame.

People complain about the state of film and music all the time now, but you know what, you get what you pay for. I stopped paying for shitty films and music years ago, I'd advise others to follow suit if they want to see a change. Profit means everything to these jackals in business suits, so you have to hurt them where they can really feel it.

That's my two cents. I was privileged to live in LA where we get smaller films all the time. I'm sorry they don't play everywhere in the U.S.

It really does suck and it's definitely elitism on their part, but I guess it does work better for some films. Awards season is the biggest tease, because they release them at the very end of the year and most places don't get them until weeks or even months later.

I live in Atlanta and sometimes limited releases take a while to show up here. It's all about the money. It costs money distributing movies to theaters and when the movies aren't widely appealing, it's going to hurt it being distribute more and wider.

Yeah, I hate having to wait for dvd for movies like The Nines and The Ten, ect. It makes me furious. I like to see these movies too you know. And not have to pay 8 extra bucks for the train ride to center city Philly.

If I have to I'll actually do it for The Assassination of Jesse James and Into the Wild. Those movies look so incredible that they will be worth it.

Another upcoming movie I'll probably have to wait for dvd, especially because of the NC-17 rating is Ang Lee's Lust, Caution. And it pisses me off!

Indeed. At most multiplexes these days there'll be "Rush Hour 3" playing on 5 different screens, yet many times at least one of those theaters is completely empty. Why not show an art-house film in that empty one rather than wasting it?!?

it's sad but true: you have to admit that if you don't live in a big city, and you're interested in independent films, you're part of a tiny, financially insignificant minority.

Dude, i just moved to australia and i whole heartedly agree with this rant. Not only are lots of movies here not even released, the ones that are i have to generally wait a good 3 more weeks than you guys in the US.
