Your Life's Horror Soundtracks

I really wish I had more time right now for trading. That being because there are more than a majority of you that have material I have never heard outside the possible viewing of the movies they came from. I did a GREAT deal of music trading up until about a year ago. This included a past specialty of mine which I did professionally for a number of years. That was the transferal of music not available commercially in a digital format, from vinyl or tape to digital. When I became emerged whole heartedly in the realm of that which is VST (virtual studio technology) everything else took a back seat. So, right now most all my free time is either (a) spent playing out as a musician, or (b) spent composing and constructing sound structure and imagery. This being for either my own inspired music or film soundtracks for others(which I am just starting to do).


Why all this self indulgent babble? Well, other than the fact that I am a self indulgent music/film loving twit of a cellar dweller orientation, I have a BIG question for you horror and soundtrack appreciators in general. That being:

What music groups & artists have you become inspired to listen to because of an appreciation for similar musical stylings. I don't care what genre of music it is. Anything.

I have really been exploring the limitless universe of music & film lately. Because of my current love affair with computer aided music design, I have been seeking out all sorts of interesting electronic musical input.

Bands/Artists like Squarepusher, Massive Attack, Aphex Twin, Goblin, Beck, Radio Head, Swamp Terrorists, Tim Jones, Jacula, Tipsy, Ministry, NIN, etc.

...have really provided some seriously wonderful inspiration and just flat out enjoyment.

who do YOU recommend? What bands & artists scare you? What bands and artists motivate you and create within you visions and feelings that correlate your preferences in film?

THE PRODIGY and PLACEBO are my two favourite bands. Their music could easily provide a soundtrack to a film that explores the darker side of life. :D

Ironically the former provided about 3 songs to the HACKERS soundtrack about 12 years ago, whilst the latter's 'EVERY YOU EVERY ME' was used to great effect in CRUEL INTENTIONS.

and don't forget Prodigy's contribution to Event Horizon. I like both those artists (and have a good deal of their material including Prodigy's Singles Box ) I honestly just pulled out Placebo's stuff yesterday before reading this post!

I know this is a "film" forum and I respect that deeply. I just figured more people would be hip to the music that conjures their own internal film.

Hmm I can't remember what they did on EVENT HORIZON , I've only seen it once. I take it given the release year it was something like 'MINDFIELDS'?

Everytime I hear a certain track from any band I can place it in one film or another (whether it's actually on the soundtrack or I just think it fits a specific scene from a different film). Also, because of my over active imagination, when I hear a track I like I create scenes for "my film" in my head and play the scene out with this particular backing music.

Surely everyone does that?

Yeah I'm surprised there hasn't been more of a contribution from the others. Sometimes soundtracks can make an average movie almost spectacular. :)

whoever did the music for 'alice sweet alice'

i like the greepy , surreal,dream like kind of music they have in older 70`s movies.

I remember seeing Event Horizon at the theater and thinking...wow, an actual original sci-fi flick. I thought those things were extinct. Then my mind was BLOWN a year or two later by The Matrix only to be completely imploded by the horrible immediate sequel that followed.

The mention of Alice, Sweet Alice (Communion) intrigued me. So I went and looked that one up. I was somewhat shocked to find out that (like a few other Horror film soundtrack writers) most of the other material that Stephen Lawrence has done has been children's material like Sesame Street & DR Seuss ! :p


(I knew there was some reason I really liked that guy!) :D


Well, I got an opportunity to check out Death Proof over the weekend. I love Q. Tarantino's work, but I must say I found this movie slightly (not by in part largely) disappointing. The redeeming quality of the movie was the amazing nostalgic approach with which MR. T exhibits his obsession with vintage 60s/70s low budget film & era. I am frankly disgusted with myself for not seeing it at the theater. Me thinks that would have added a lot. I am looking forward to Planet Terror.

Prodigy did the end song ´"It´s the funky Shit" in Event Horizon, then Orbital & Michael Kamen did the score

Great music in this movie...

A band I would love to see doing original music to a movie, is Type O Negative
(I know they did something to an old Dracula movie before)
