Which one of these films should have been kept on the updated AFI 100 years, 100 movies list?
1. All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) (54)
2. Amadeus (1984) (53)
3. An American in Paris (1951) (68)
4. The Birth of a Nation (1915) (44)
5. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) (64)
6. Dances with Wolves (1990) (75)
7. Doctor Zhivago (1965) (39)
8. Fantasia (1940) (58)
9. Fargo (1996) (84)
10. Frankenstein (1931) (87)
11. From Here to Eternity (1953) (52)
12. Giant (1956) (82)
13. Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) (99)
14. The Jazz Singer (1927) (90)
15. The Manchurian Candidate (1962) (67)
16. Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) (86)
17. My Fair Lady (1964) (91)
18. Patton (1970) (89)
19. A Place in the Sun (1951) (92)
20. Rebel Without a Cause (1955) (59)
21. Stagecoach (1939) (63)
22. The Third Man (1949) (57)
23. Wuthering Heights (1939) (73)
My choice is 'The Third Man'. One of the best film noirs ever. 'Fargo' and 'Close Encounters' are also tops.

The Manchurian Candidate. Without it, there'd be no such thing as a political thriller.
The Third Man is great, but, seeing as it's a British film, I don't think it had a strong enough American influence (in terms of its actual making) to deserve a place as a nominee, let alone on the list itself.

I wish Guess Who's Coming to Dinner would've stayed on there; that movie spoke volumes about a lot of things - still does.

The Manchurian Candidate. One of the best films ever made. Period.

The Third Man should have been on the list. I know it is British, but so are Lawrence and Bridge on the River Kwai and it was nominated.
Actual American films that should be on the list--Frankenstein, Stagecoach, and Birth of a Nation.

Fantasia and Rebel Without a Cause. Both excellent movies that are worthy of being on the list.
IMO, Fantasia is WAAAAY better than Snow White!

Fantasia was just a bunch of random images that appealed to mass stoners, which I don't think disney intended to happen, but it did. Also, I think that Fargo is one of the best thrillers to come out of the Hollywood system since anything. Does the AFI have a grudge against the Coens?

I believe this is the defining movie of the 90s, and I'd argue that it's even more influential (and certainly a better film) than PULP FICTION.
All in all, the whole list is messed up when movies can drop from the 50s to off the list.

They drop the Coens' only movie on the list and they have a grudge against them? That's a little harsh, isn't it?

Fantasia was great visual storytelling and far more effective than most of Disney's other animated movies, especially the overrated Snow White.
As for Fargo, I liked it. I think it's a good movie and I thought William H. Macey was fantastic. But I don't think it's quite a great movie and Frances McDormand's performance is so overrated/overpraised. It wasn't a terrible performance, it just wasn't anything special. It was average at best.

Considering that I love more than 100 movies, it's hard to say which ones I think belong on there. Fargo certainly didn't deserve to get knocked off, no more than Ben-Hur deserved to be bumped down to fucking 100. On the other hand, a lot of great movies went up. Rebel Without a Cause is one of the most iconic films of all time, so why they bumped that off I have no idea.
I think it's funny how they felt the need to be PC by replacing The Birth of a Nation with Intolerance. I guess as far as quality goes Intolerance is much better and it's not vulgarly offensive like The Birth of a Nation, but then again it was the definitive starting point for cinema and film would not be the same today had it never been made.

Fargo and Amadeus, no doubt about it. Close Encounters... maybe. It's great and beautiful and brilliant, but I do think that I can think of 100 movies that are better than it. Fargo and Amadeus, on the other hand, are really high up in my book.
Now a real question would be what movies REMAINED on the updated AFI list that COULD be removed without being missed... that would be long :P

The Third Man should be high on the 100 list. Assuming no other Coen film is in the AFI 100, I'd say Fargo shouldn't have been omitted. Rebel Without A Cause is so damned iconic, it's a shame it's gone - with Giant being gone, I can't think of why James Dean isn't represented on this list. Rebel was iconic & Giant was just great.
What bugs me is that at least one of these films were ranked in the top 50... that doesn't make any sense and totally takes integrity away from the list, IMO. How the hell can something be ranked 44, meaning AFI thought 66 other movies weren't as good as that one, but they have to drop it off in order to add 22 other movies. So the movie they are adding is better than one ranked at #44, but suddenly #44 is worse than the remaining 40-or-so.... What the hell, man.
