The big news today, that started over at AICN, is that Len Wiseman will no longer be directing Escape and that Brett Ratner has replaced him.

contacted a source over at New Line, the studio behind the film, and was able to confirm the story which is no longer a rumor but instead 100% fact. Brett Ratner will take over directorial duties on the remake.

Which leads to a lot of other questions. Will the script go through a re-write process? Hopefully not considering that it’s pretty solid but you never know with the Rat in charge of the film.

Does this mean Len Wiseman will now be moving forward with the highly anticipated Gear of War film? Nope, been informed that Wiseman is also off the video game adaptation and that New Line Cinema will most likely not move forward with the film at all. Our source is saying that the studio has concerns with ballooning budget of the film.

Video game adaptations are not proven blockbusters the way comic book films have become in the last 10 years. Studios have a hard time gambling $100 million dollars plus to a genre that has not been able to break out of the “Uwe Boll” stereotypes.

The best hope that future video game films may have, and this is totally IMO, is to have Michael Bay make Prince of Persia after he is done with Transformers 2 and prove that a video game movie can make $300-400 million in worldwide box office receipts.

Until then be prepared for less than mediocre video game films with hacks as directors.

Ratner will probably cast Chris Tucker as The Duke of New York, and Jackie Chan as Cabbie...

There are two talents needed to be a successful filmmaker in Hollywood.

1. A creative vision

2. Organizational skills of getting everything done on time and on schedule.
l
Some filmmakers are geniuses without the capacity to be 100% number two, like Terry Gillium.

Others, like Bret, are ONLY 2 and have nothing in the numero uno department.

I hate Brett Ratner with a PASSION.

You know what is REALLY gonna piss me off? When the trailers, posters and pretty much everything else that has to do with this film will announce in big, bold letters and numerous times: a Brett Ratner film. Sorry, Rat, this is a John Carpenter film, so don't you dare take credit for it! You're just a studio hired hack, you have donated absolutely NOTHING creative to the film to possibly justify your slapping your name on it. Just look at X-Men 3: visually, that was a Bryan Singer film; Ratner added absolutely NOTHING creatively to that film at all! What a lowlife bastard I really HATE the man! I think I even may hate him more than I hate Joel Schumacher!!!

This image pretty much sums it all up:

Could not have said it better Monotreme. There is a 'critic' saying that was either coined by A.O. Scott or Leornord Maltin that goes

"Only a talented director can make something absolutely terrible to the point where you are passionately against it. A terrible director is someone who creates forgotten work that the audience feels numb or indifferent about"

Schumacher, for what its worth, is talented. Phantom of the Operah, the Lost Boys, Phone Booth, etc. He's hated because he took up the reigns of Batman and NOT only decided to scrap Elfman's classic music but reinvent the world Burton successfully set up with the first two. He made them slapstick, colorful and reminecent of Adam West's Batman films...

Now if they called in Ratner, he would have half assed everything that made the first two Bat films interesting, he would have slaped on nods and winks to the first two films, and he would have illogically set up a surprise ending right before his name DITRECTED BY BRET RATNER!!! came on...

he is the true meaning of the word hack. I have more respect for Paul Anderson (not P.T., the one fucking Mila) than I do him.

This man is scum. Although I didn't like the idea of a remake, Len Wiseman is at least a competant director.

Kurt Russel should throw Ratner off a building.

It's funny because I can totally see that happening. Not that I REALLY wish Brett Ratner harm.... (Shifty eyes)

Ratner's not that bad of a director but he's definitely not one I'd like at all to see remake John Carpenter's classic.

He's a director for hire who can deliver a decent product on time but usually not much more than that, decent. He's not very creative nor is he very memorable in what he does. And for the record, I would rather have seen a Ratner formulaic approach to Batman Forever than Schumacher's version anyday of the week. X-men 3 wasn't as good as the first two but it wasn't downright horrible like the two Batman sequals.

I'm just going to disregard this film, kind of how I disregard the fact that Ratner made Red Dragon.

ok so the RAT have left new york but

Right after his turn as the Spartan in "300," Butler made a deal to play Snake Plissken in a film bought at auction by New Line. He left for creative differences. New Line is persevering: studio has brought Jonathan Mostow in to rewrite, with an option to direct.

so has the main star.

Yeah, what happened to Escape from Earth (or whatever the Carpenter/Russell project was titled)? Don't they realize getting Butler to do Plissken is like Harvey Keitel playing Rambo? Jeez...
