I keep seeing the trailers for Beowulf on TV and is it just me or does this movie look absolutely terrible? Could they pack in enough CGI? I don't know about this.
It's sad to see a story as epic as Beowulf being done so poorly.

I think it looks pretty cool and badass, but I could definitely see how people might not like the concept that Robert Zemeckis is using to tell the Beowulf story.

Looks badass. I just read this again for a college course, and I am so glad a decent rendition of Beowulf is hitting the big screen.

Zemeckis NEVER disappoints. Judging from the trailer, this is no exception.

Saw the trailer for this before The Brave One and I don't like the look of the animation at all, I'll end up checking it out at some point since I love the story of Beowulf but I'm not expecting much.

Can they pack in enough CGI into an ANIMATED film? That's like asking if they can pack that much reality into a real film. Animation and CGI is it's medium.
As for the movie, it looks beautiful and glorious. Can't wait.

This movie is going to be so epic! The trailer is too short but it looks to me that Zemeckis is going to create a very tangible and intoxicating atmosphere that no other film (unCGI Capture) could be able to do. The film looks like an utterly amazing adventure flick...
Can't wait to see it.

I think it looks like a good time. It's a kickass story. Robert Zemeckis does well with fantasy. I couldn't judge the animation, though, because I've only seen it online. I just hope I'm able to catch it in theaters.

I couldn't care less about it. Definitely won't be seeing it in theater and I wouldn't bother to rent it. Maybe if it was ever on TV for free and it was already playing halfway through.

This might be the first time I've ever agreed with something you've had to say.
Complaining about too much CGI in a film that's entirely CGI is beyond stupid. It doesn't even make sense. I truly hope Olboj mistyped or something, because otherwise... goddamn.
However, I do agree the actual film looks "meh" at best.

You know why it looks terrible to me, is because everybody says "It looks like shit."
I've actually been anticipating this one. It ain't in my top five even, but still, I wanna see this thing.
If there is one thing in the trailers that gets me it's the generic heavy metal soundtrack. The intro works, but not the music as a whole.
I think it'll be pretty kick-ass, and maybe that's all thanks to Roger Avary's enthusiasm as much as anything else. The guy really thinks this is gonna rock.

the idea of Zemeckis doing a Beowulf adaptation definitely intrigues me, but I don't get why the man is on such a mission to prove that CGI can look just as good as shot film? first Polar Express, now this... Has anyone heard of the Uncanny Valley Theory? when animation tries to look super-close to the real thing (remember the final fantasy movie), I think it just looks weird and creepy.

...and it will remain that way until someone does it so well, or in such a way as to make it impossible for people to deny its geniuos. Maybe thats what he's trying to do, but I doubt he will accomplish this with Beowulf. I will be seeing this movie, as the red-band trailer has goten me intrigued.

Yeah. I love The Polar Express and I'm sure this will be great too. But I wish he would go back to making movies like Forrest Gump and Contact. Of coarse that's probably because those are two of my all time favorite movies. Zemeckis is a totally awesome director and I will always look forward to ANY movie he cranks out. But I hope his next film is live action. Give the CGI animation a rest. At least for now.

Even though I wish it could have been live action, I am still intrigued. Heck, most action movies today have so much CGI in them that they are basically animation.

Saw another trailer (a different one) before Eastern Promises and it actually got me interested in this, the animation looks pretty damn good and a lot more interesting than it was before.

You're not the only one, this looks horrid. The only thing about this movie that works for me, is the "casting" of Jolie as a demon... what better.

Could we give some real "shared" credit here?
This is Robert Zemekis doing a screenplay by Roger Avary AND Neil (Sandman) Gaiman. Despite the whole motion capture, super-realistic CGI, the real crux of this movie is based on how well Zemekis and the Avary/Gaiman vision is melded and portrayed on screen.

doesn't look very good, I love Zemeckis I just wish he would have made this one a live action movie, I don't think it will do very well at the box office, mocap movies haven't done very well in the past

I dont have a problem with this movie, looks cool, but my problem is with Angelina Jolies involvement. Perfect baby collecting monster. I think the technology they use in this film is pretty cool, id infact love to see a Diablo movie in this format.

The ads for this have been all over the place, content wise. It's like they aren't sure how to market this thing. Is Warner Bros. doing the marketing? I wouldn't be surprised. They're DREADFUL at promoting their films.

The whole thing just creeps me out because of the CGI human thing. It looked great in Final Fantasy but was still distracting and creepy when it was done then and I see the same thing now. I don't think it looks interesting and could honestly care less

The comments so far speak volumes to me.
I really don't think people are going to warm up to this movie. The animation looks much better than The Polar Express, but I'm not a big fan of photo-realistic CGI. I mean, what's the point when we've seen that movies like LOTR and Narnia can easily pull of the same stuff for the same budget? So you make a CGI animated movie that parents won't take their kids to because it's too violent, and because it's a "cartoon movie," a lot of adults won't even bother because of the stereotype that animated movies are for kids.
But me personally? I thought the Beowulf story was just plain stupid.

I don't mind the human cgi stuff, I just wonder why they had to make the cg characters look exactly like the people doing their voices (in most cases, ahem). It's not like they had to, and seems rather lazy of them creatively. I guess Mr. Z and his digital magic band are catering to egos?

I think the way it was made will overshadow everything else about it: the story, the characters, etc. I don't think the CGI was necessary to make this classic story, especially after LOTR and everything. I'll still go and see it; I'll give Zemeckis the benefit of the doubt, but I'm not thrilled as to how it looks.

Its because all of the humans are mo'capped. Its not just "Hey lets make them look like them."

So they had to have actors act out the movie,
And then they had to go back and redo it all to MAKE real acting INTO CG.
...that would be the problem with this project.
If these were projects just about making kickass animation, cool. Problem is, it's pretty painfully obvious Zemeckis is trying to use CGI actors to take the place of real actors. Which is pretty wtf, because he uses real actors to do it, and makes the CG look like the real actors.
That's pretty much the best way to CAUSE the "uncanny valley".
Also: There's a lot of bias in the "uncanny valley". The things they rate as the closest to real people and therefore the worst are, and I kid you not, real-life zombies (er, representations of them) and corpses. I think people are freaked out about those things for other reasons. You know, what with the whole being dead and/or trying to eat your brains thing.
