Why, John Woo, why? Why would you allow someone to remake what is, quite possibly, the best movie of your career? Say it ain’t so, John! Sigh. Yes, it’s so. John Woo and producer bud Terence Chang will be producing an American remake of Woo’s classic 1989 film “The Killer”, about a Hong Kong hitman who blinds a club singer during a contract killing, and spends the remainder of the movie trying to make enough money to restore her sight, even as he’s pursued by a persistent cop and a psychopathic ex-client who wants him dead. Korean-American director John H. Lee, best known for 2004’s Korean sappy melodrama “A Moment to Remember”, will direct the remake, make the lead a Korean man, and set the film around Los Angeles.

More from The Hollywood Reporter:

Director Lee told The Hollywood Reporter that he’s excited about working on the remake of one of his “favorite films of all time.”

“I ask myself why they chose me and whether I can top it,” Lee said from Seoul on Monday. “But then I realize it’s not about making it better. It’s about making my own version. My strength is dealing with human emotions, austerity and elegance.”

The most disturbing aspect of this is that John Woo obviously okay the remake, since Chang is producing it, and when Chang is involved, John Woo is involved. Why, John, why??? It’s not like this is one of those movies that could be improved with today’s special effects. The original was a perfect movie; there IS no room for improvement.

People need to stop their bitching; its not like a remake will somehow delete the originals existence or quality. At best you'll have two really really good movies, at worst you'll still have one really really good movie, which is what you have now, so how can you lose?

If Woo is cool with it, who is anybody to say otherwise?

John Woo lost his touch in America, and now someone messes with something that is sacred. This can't end happily.

John Woo's Hard Boiled, The Killer, A Better Tomorrow 1 + 2 and Bullet to the Head should be considered untouchable for all time.

The remake is gonna be shit!! I know it, mark my fucking words.

No one can ever recreate the same kind of action John Woo does. Ever.

I can't wait for Red Cliff. Fuck this remake shit.

wasn't Johnny To supposed to be making a remake/sequel to Hard Boiled? i know they came out with stranglehold, the video game sequel, but what happened with that hard boiled stuff? i like hard boiled alot more than i like the killer but i also think it would be much easier to adapt and much harder to fuck up. why does the main guy have to be korean? i am more confused than angered by this project. i think i'll stay home the day it comes out and watch woo on dvd to avoid my head exploding.

Oh for crying out loud. Take out the action sequences and The Killer is a pretty dumb movie.

The part that always gets me is that through out the whole movie, the cop (forget his name) is tracking down "Jeffery." He's looking for Jeffrey. He confronts Jeffrey. Then in the end, in the middle of the shoot out, he says "Hey, I don't even know your name..."

WTF?!?! Yes you do! It's Jeffery!

Micky Mouse/Dumbo - whatever. I always thought this movie was ripe for a good remake. There's lots of room for improvement.
