The CG-Animated Thundercats feature film has a director to add to their list, Jerry O'Flaherty has been brought on board to bring these '80's icons to life.

A video game veteran, this is O'Flaherty's first shot at a feature length film. Warner Brothers is the studio behind the film with Paul Sopocy as screenwriter.

Here's an excerpt from the official announcement from Variety,

Warner Bros. has tapped its top Thundercat.

Vidgame vet Jerry O'Flaherty will helm the studio's CG-animated "Thundercats" feature, based on the popular '80s cartoon series, comicbook and toy line.

The project marks the first feature directing gig for O'Flaherty, who served as an art director on such bestselling games as "Gears of War" and "Unreal Tournament 3" for Epic Games and the "Command and Conquer" series from Westwood Studios.

O'Flaherty had been looking to make the leap into movies and was considering several projects, even live action.

But the "Thundercats" story appealed to him, as well as the fact that vidgames are increasingly incorporating lavish animated sequences that mimic pics, making a toon a much easier transition.

"It feels like a natural thing for me to step into," he said. "Games have come so far now. The last four years of my life have been about bringing the energy of filmmaking into the videogame experience."

O'Flaherty will now work with scribe Paul Sopocy on the script.

I like this and I'll tell you why:

Videogames have been striving for quite sometime to have the look, feeling and scope of feature films. So much so that a lot are actually surpassing movies in terms of structure and storytelling. Bringing in a a director with videogame experience is a positive thing, because unlike film directors now, who want to make their movies feel like a videogame, this guy will actually strive to make his movie BE an actual movie.

This will be a success. I thought it was going to be live-action at first, but I like the idea of it being CG a whole lot more! This will be even more impressive than the Ninja Turtles movie, especially with Jerry O'Flaherty's style influencing the film. Gears of War is still one of the best looking games I have ever played!

I used to watch Thundercats as a kid and they were okay in my book. If they make a CGI MOTU though I would be pretty disappointed. Live action or animated for me. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.
