from movie hole
wow the studio has some faith in jj abrams i mean alot.
Moviehole is reporting that Abram’s Trek is expected to reach $160 million which is close to the $150 million area that we have been hearing for a few weeks.
If those numbers hold true that would make it the most expensive Star Trek film ever. The 9th Trek film, Insurrection, held that title with a $70 million budget. That film was able to bring in $115 million in world wide box office receipts.
The least expensive Trek film was Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn coming in at $12 million and making $97 Million around the globe and easily being the best film of the series.
The Star Trek film that has been able to bring in the most at the box office was the 8th film of the franchise, First Contact, which featured The Next Generation crew. That film was able to gobble up approximately $150 million in world wide receipts with a $46 million production budget.
A $150-160 million dollar production budget is an incredible amount of money and considering that no one is expecting any actor to demand a “Tom Cruise” paycheck , it tells us that Abrams will deliver the most action packed film in Trek history.
The marketing of Trek, which is known as P&A (prints and ads) in the industry, is expected to be just as big as what Dreamworks/Paramount did for Transformers which would put it in the $50 million dollar area taking Star Trek 11 over the $200 million dollar budget.
Can Abrams deliver? Michael Bay was able to make his $147 million production budget go a long way in Transformers and that film has brought in $700 million is worldwide receipts but JJ and Paramount will have an uphill battle.
Hardcore Trek fans are so far split about his casting decisions and the rumored storyline has not been able to give a confidence boost to them either. But realistically it’s pretty sure that the studio will be going after the larger movie going audience and not focusing too much on die hard Trekkers.
