While a good film, I found American Gangster to be grossly overrated. My vote goes to The Departed

American Gangster is easily the better film, The Departed sucked.

Both movies had a similar effect on me. I sat there, and when they were done I was like that was kinda cool, then an hour later Im thinking... what a waste of time. Admittedly, the Departed is the better film. but um... neither?

My vote goes to The Departed -- it's vastly superior than American Gangster, which was a HUGE disappointment and a very dull, underwhelming picture.

American Gangster.
It was more satisfying. I know I'm in the minority, but I thought the last twenty minutes of The Departed was crap and really brought it down.

the last twenty minutes of the Departed got you completely offguard and made you realize that after all the tension of the movie, all the awkward situations and false friendships and alliances, that no one was safe, and you were just on your own, out to defend your self. excellent.
i thought both of the movies were really good, but The Departed was just better. You really just cant top a cast like that

SPOILERS!
I applaud the movie for having guts. Killing off Leo's character, especially in the manner of how he is killed off, is pretty gutsy. But while it might be gutsy it was also incredibly unsatisfying and made me feel like it was pointless to get involved with the characters if they were just going to be taken out like this. At least if it had been Damon who killed Leo, then it probably would have been okay. But he doesn't get killed by Damon. He gets killed by fucking Chase Edmunds! He gets killed by a minor character.
Plus, the last twenty minutes of the movie is both figuratively and quite literally overkill. The amount of deaths that get piled on one after another, it just felt incredibly contrived to me. There is a such a thing as too many deaths and this movie pulls it off. It got to the point where the elevator scene was actually hilarious.

The film is a classic example of double crosses, special deals, betrayal and a search for redemption all mixed up into one, and the last half hour or so is where it finally just explodes.
DiCaprio and Wahlberg both had that attachment to Sheen. Because of Damon, Sheen dies. Betrayal #1. Nicholson is selling out his friends to the FBI, maybe including Damon. Betrayal #2. Damon kills Nicholson. Betrayal #3. FBI turns over information regarding DiCaprio to Damon. Betrayal #4. DiCaprio then sells out Damon to his girlfriend. Betrayal #5. DiCaprio tries to kill Damon and gets his head blown off by one of those guys in his "pack". Betrayal #6. Damon kills this other guy, killing off his last standing tie to Nicholson. Betrayal #7. Wahlberg kills Damon. Betrayal #8.
Everybody was a rat, everybody except Wahlberg [and Sheen too, I guess] and thats why he's the last man standing. Snitches get stitches, die like bitches and get buried in ditches. The film is all about that. But its smarter about it.

anyone can get killed by anyone, because there is no top of the game when youre in the line of betrayals. it just proved anything can happen, and sometimes you just cant see whose got your number, because theyre not always the person you think it will be. i thought that was quite well done.

Both are amongst the most engrossing pieces of crime drama I have seen in quite a while, but it's The Departed, no doubt.

The Departed was my second favorite movie of last year and American Gangster will definatly be on my top 10 of 2007. They are both brilliant crime movies but i have to say The Departed is the better movie. It has more edge and more style that i like

"The Departed" by far. Before this, I was beginning to wonder if Scorsese had lost his touch, since I wasn't wild about any of his post-"Casino" efforts. But thankfully he proved me wrong with this one. I, too, applaud having the guts to kill off Leo's character...especially since I didn't find him that likable. It was almost like "Dial M for Murder" in that the bad guy (Matt Damon/Ray Milland) was actually more charming and likable than the good guy (Leonardo DiCaprio/Robert Cummings).
"American Gangster" is also good, but doesn't dig as deep character-wise. I did, however, like the element of both characters doing their separate thing throughout and then finally crossing paths at the end.
Intriguingly The Departed (a remake) felt more original than American Gangster, which, to me, seemed to be little more than a grab bag of moments already done better in other movies.
The Departed then

I love Ridley Scott, so it pains me to say that I prefer The Departed over American Gangster, which I still think is a good movie just not as good as The Departed.

Which is funny since I actually prefer American Gangster to The Departed. I just found American Gangster to be more satisfying.

I actually took a nap through the last 20 minutes of AG. So I technically haven't seen the whole thing. But I saw The Departed 3 times opening weekend, so I don't think that would've made a difference.

I thought the Departed was great (even though my friends said it was better than Goodfellas which is OBVIOUSLY not true)
But I would have to go with American Gangster. I thought the story was a little stronger even though I thought Scorsese did a better job than Scott in filming

Personally, I'm in agreement with your friends. While I admire "GoodFellas"' craft, I just didn't find any of the main characters that engaging (except Joe Pesci, who doesn't even live to see the final act...but even he's just doing a more amped-up version of his "Raging Bull" character). I found both "The Departed" AND "Casino" far more interesting.

The Departed was good, but nothing like Goodfellas. But still better than American Gangster, which I kinda liked. Josh Brolin was the coolest part in it.
Russell Crowe and Denzel have been better.

Spoilers... Spoilers... Spoilers.
The Departed is cool and fun, but I think American Gangster is a far superior film. Crowe and Denzel give truly great performances, the story moves at a solid pace, and there isn't anything really forced on the audience. In The Departed I felt like while it was a fun time a few things that happened just seemed a bit too unplausible. I didn't like how Marky Mark disappears throughout the third act knowing that he was the only one who knew Dicaprio was a cop. I didn't like how Matt Damon was always on the phone after something concerning Nicholson happened, but no one (not even Sheen who basically caught him giving them up) seemed to notice. I also thought seeing Leo act like a little bitch about everything, and freaking out every time someone asked him a question would have been pretty clear that he was the rat the whole time.
Anyway. American Gangster > The Departed, but I still think Scorsese > Scott.

This poll blows my mind... I guess that's why The Departed won an Oscar for Marty and not one of his actual great movies. All he needed to do was remake three movies into one and pretend he didn't ruin it with constant plot points coming into question.

I enjoyed The Departed more. It's probably because it's a little absurdist and funny. American Gangster was also a very good movie, but it took itself a bit too seriously.
