View Full Version : Mid-Decade Round-Up

There are a lot of bullshit polls about favorite movies so far this decade. The thing is, there are a few movies from this decade that I constantly see thrown again and again across this board, and I'm very curious which - of the board favorites - would come on top.
I'm guessing Children of Men will win. Who knows, eh?

Where's City of God?
I voted for ESOTSM, which I would have anyway even if City of God was there. I'm surprised though, because it's on many top lists. Not just of 2002, but of all time. Children of Men would not be a bad choice though.

The nominees are the movies mentioned most often by Schmoes on this board. I rarely see City of God mentioned, especially in comparison to those on the poll. Although I doubt anyone whose seen it (and is clever) would deny it's one of the best this decade.

Partyboy I agree with you completely. And count me in as part of your army in the defense of THE trilogy.
As far as best films of all time I think the only ones that come close are Its A Wonderful Life, Shawshank Redemption, Cool Hand Luke, The Sting, Apocalypse Now, Saving Private Ryan, and maybe a few others I cant think of. And of course this is just my opinion.

1. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - 9/10
2. Batman Begins - 9/10
3. Pan's Labyrinth - 9/10
4. Memento - 9/10 (grade raised significantly upon a rewatch)

6. Kill Bill - 8.5/10
7. Requiem for a Dream - 8.5/10
8. Oldboy - 8.5/10

Shouldn't Mulholland Dr. be on the poll? I think it gets more love and is mentioned more on these boards than The Fountain and Pan's Labyrinth. For my money, it's also easily the best film of this decade.

Children of Men, which would be my actual choice as well.
Batman Begins is really that well-regarded? I see it has 3 votes and was at least ranked by Hannibal as better than COM, Memento, The Departed, the Kill Bills, No Country for Old Men... Why? Sure, it's a very good comic book movie, but it's still just a comic book movie. I don't see a single aspect of it that screams "masterpiece" and certainly not THE film of the decade. Then again, a lot of people seemed to think the by-the-numbers Spiderman 2 was some revelation too and at least BB is better than that.

I think comic book adaptations are very capable of being films that can be masterpieces. Even though many dont understand me on this I still think Superman Returns was one of the greatest cinematic experiences I have ever had. It all depends on what you like.
PS. I would think Sin City would make this list as well as that was a very mind blowing but also influential film. Not necessarily in my top 20 but it is in A LOT of other peoples I would think.

Oldboy - 9/10
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - 10/10
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King - 9/10
Children of Men - 8/10
The Departed - 10/10
Memento - 10/10
Pan's Labyrinth - 9/10
Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2 - n/a
No Country for Old Men - 10/10
Requiem for a Dream - 8/10
Batman Begins - 8/10
The Fountain- 7/10
These are all excellent choices (besides Kill Bill 1&2, which I haven't seen), but as of this moment I have to go with The Departed. Although Memento is currently higher up on my all-time favorites list and is my #2 in this poll, there's something to be said for the fact that whenever, and I mean literally, whenever I catch The Departed on I watch it till the end, no matter whether it's 2 minutes in or 2 hours in. I can watch that movie over and over and over again and it just gets better and better. It's IMO the greatest popcorn flick ever made. For me, no movie combines entertainment value and art quite like this one.

Out of this list I would say Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Though all of these films are 4 star to me, with the exception of Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which i think is 3.

4. Requiem for a Dream- 9/10
5. The Departed- 9/10

Oldboy - 10/10
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - 9/10
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King - 10/10
Children of Men - 10/10
The Departed - 9.5/10
Memento - 8/10
Pan's Labyrinth - 9/10
Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2 - 8.5/10
No Country for Old Men - 10/10
Requiem for a Dream - 10/10
Batman Begins - 9/10
The Fountain- 8/10
Lots of good movies, but I voted Requiem, as it's one of my all time favorites, but those 4 tens (ROTK trails a bit though) are all incredible and could potentially find a place among my all-time favorite films. There are several that I really need to rewatch though, particularly Memento, ESOTSM, and The Fountain (just because I need to solidify my opinion on the thing).

Pan's Labyrinth and Children of Men... two good films that get way too much love. Though I am going to look into both again soon.
I was also unaware the two Kill Bill films were even well regarded anymore. I think Tarantino being a fuckin hack has something to do with it. Though Vol.2 is great.
Requiem for a Dream is an exceptionally graphic after school special. Its broken dreams thing is weak, and it essentially comes down to drugs r bad mmkay.

I voted for Eternal Sunshine 10/10. I would rank the rest of the films like so...
Oldboy 9/10
Memento 9/10
No Country for Old Men 8/10
Pan's Labyrinth 8/10
The Departed 8/10
LOTR Return of the King 8/10
Kill Bill 8/10
Requiem for a Dream 8/10
The Fountain 8/10
Children of Men 8/10
Batman Begins 7/10
Even though I'm not a huge fan of the series I think LOTR kinda best represents this decades filmmaking. It kinda reinvented the epic and even the Hollywood Blockbuster to an extent. It's also the best example of the growth of technology and how it can be used to develop an engaging narrative.
However what I find most interesting about this decade is how accessible foreign and smaller budget films are. It's easy to find films from country's that I never even guessed would have had a film industry. I mean all the great Korean films, Belgium's L'Enfant, Romania's 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days it's awesome being able to see these movies.

I still need to find a theater that's playing No Country for Old Men, so until then I won't vote. If I end up not liking it, it'll be between Memento and The Departed.
