View Full Version : Best Realistic Fist Fight in a Movie

What is your favorite/best fist fight in a movie? Not Jet Li crap where he moves his hands 10000 miles per hour. I'm talking about a hard nosed, brutal fist fight.
I would say my favorite would be in Gangs of New York when Amsterdam fights the guy at the bar. He fucks him up so bad with the left and then the guy ducks when he sees it coming after like the third punch, and Amsterdam just beats his head back and fourth with his elbow.
When I saw that in the theatre I fucking cheered. DiCaprio gets some seriously badass fight scenes in Scorsese films. Like in The Departed when he beats the shit out of the two guys at the convenience store, and also when he smashes that guy in the head with the glass, and he womps the shit out of Damon on the roof at the end of the movie.

The fight between Frank Sinatra and Henry Silva in the original Manchurian Candidate. It's a little dated but it's still exciting and extremely well-edited.

I'll start off with the obvious for me, and that's the Bourne Ultimatum. The Waterloo station scene where Bourne picks off the guys in the stairway. And, also the Tangiers fight between Desh and Bourne. I study the arts and feel it's pretty realistic as they come if you fight hand to hand and start getting grimy and use whatever is around you. I was convinced that is something that can happen...between two well-trained fighters.
For pure, untrained, messy fights? Hmmm...I have to give it some more thought. I'll have to post that later when something comes to mind.

I think I got one. The gay club scene in Irreversible. Where they get into a scuffle and it ends up with some guy getting his head crushed with a trash dispenser on the floor.

That one was pretty fucking cool, and for some reason it made me think of another great one.
The brawl outside of the club at the beginning of The Way of the Gun.

My mistake. I've seen it a few times but it was awhile ago. Details have escaped me!

You definately should. It's sort of like Butch & Sundance, but MUCH darker.

Ha Leo does get to kick a lot of ass in Marty movies, that's a pretty good point.
Anyway They Live like Evil said is probably the best example of a real fight on screen. It was just a long, drawn out, tiring, brutal affair that leads to the to main characters respecting one another. It really captures the psychology of a fist fight.

Okay, I just caught Eastern Promises today and that just made my list of best fight scenes! Viggo Mortenson getting down and dirty with two Russian thugs in a bathhouse! And naked! That's gotta hurt when you're being tossed around with no elbow and knee padding! I can only say, 'Wow!'

If you're gonna talk about Stallone and Rourke you have to mention the Get Carter remake as well.

That From Russia With Love fight is legendary. I also have an affinity for the forrest scuffle in Kurosawa's Rashomon. Oh, and the murder scene in Hitchcock's Torn Curtain is masterfully done.
