I voted the Lion King, followed by Beauty and The Beast, Fantasia, and Pinocchio. Though that may easily change once Disney stops making me want to kill myself and actually releases these movies out of their stupid goddamn vault. That said, any of those 3 could possibly overtake The Lion King upon rewatching them.
I'm tempted to say Pinocchio is objectively the best though.

Well mostly because when I think "classic disney" I think of their traditionally animated pictures, their computer animated films are all in collaberation with Pixar, these ones are only Disney. I love the computer ones, I would just put them in a separate poll of their own.

Beauty and the Beast
Everything about this film is epic. The opening sequence and the scene in the ballroom are masterfully done.
Seeing it on the IMAX screens was among my best theater moviegoing experiences (along with seeing Snakes on a Plane with a crowd full of stoners and Kill Bill Vol 1 on opening night).
I love the Lion King, but a lot of that has to do with nostalgia, as it was my favorite film from childhood. I think that, nostalgia aside, Beauty and the Beast is the best-told story.

I guess a lot of people are going to be partial to the 1989-1994 resurgence of Disney greatness, since probably most of us were kids then...and damn, those are some great movies. I'm probably going with Aladdin on this one because for one thing it's a great part of my childhood, plus I can still enjoy it a lot today. Second place would go to The Jungle Book...it was the first Disney movie I ever saw, and it's also one I can enjoy today (fuck it...come to think of it, MOST Disney movies are). But anyway, if I have kids someday, I'd want them to watch The Jungle Book.

Hard to compare eras and impact. I would think Fantasia or Snow White had the biggest impact, but I don't know if that makes them the best. My personal favorite is Aladdin though. Great voicework, great music, solid enough story, an Aesop-like moral, and enough jokes for every one. I loved it as a kid, and love it for completely different reasons today (I'm 22).
I also loved Mulan. Kind of a sleeper, but it was really good, until Mulan II bastardized it.

I agree about it being important, but I agree more on the dislike. That is one boring-ass movie. But then I find "Pinnochio" and all the pre-"The Little Mermaid" Disney movies to be a yawner.
For me it's always going to be "The Lion King" as the supreme animated feature that chases, pounces, bites, tears and absolutely shreds the others like they're helpless does.
Way, way below, it's the 90's movies, Disney's best times. "Mulan", "Hercules", "The Beauty and the Beast" and "Aladdin". And "The Emperor's New Groove" is fucking hilarious, but that's 2000, I think.

Bambi, Fantasia and Pinocchio are actual art. The Lion King is pop art. It is neither classy good like The Little Mermaid or fucking awesome like Beauty and the Beast. Its not at as weak as Aladdin, but its not a masterpiece. Not even close. The score is, yes, the best thing about it.
Nothing in the Disney renaissance even approaches the classic beauty of a piece out of the archives of Disney's past. There is never a moment in the new films like when the gun goes off and the deer turn to solid color in Bambi, later revealing the death. The whale's appearance in Pinocchio. Even the scenes in the Witches' dungeon in the otherwise lacking Snow White exude a gothic feeling of genuine creepiness not found in any of the renaissance films. The last film to be completely done in the classic Disney style was The Great Mouse Detective and The Black Cauldron, though those films [much like the animated films from 101 Dalmatians onward] lack the intensely classy work present in films like Sleeping Beauty and Alice in Wonderland.
Nothing will top the Night on Bald Mountain sequence of Fantasia, the three animated segments of Song of the South, Disney's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Disney's rendition of Peter and the Wolf.
Disney is a shadow of its former self. It has been for a long time. Nothing they have done in the last twenty years will ever top what they accomplished at the height of their game.

I partially agree with the sentiment posted above. I personally do love the first 4 renaissance Disney movies, especially Beauty and the Beast and the Lion King, but the old classics had an exuberance and an excitement about them that Disney has yet to regain. Perhaps this has something to do, mainly in the first 4 or 5, with the process they were going through of being on the front lines, vigorously developing, refining, and generally pioneering a relatively new art form, which at the time had never previously been used in a feature film. I think that the creative, adventurous spirit behind the making of those films can be seen and felt in every frame. There's enormous passion behind it. Hell, look at Fantasia. It's one big, beautiful act of exuberant innovation, and that comes across clearly. You can feel it.
Plus all the movies that Walt Disney was personally involved in were just perfectly executed. The guy had such a gift for storytelling. All those movies move along briskly, fully communicate the story and the message, and never miss a beat. The new movies do tend to get too wrapped up in huge elaborate musical numbers which, while fun and horrifying catchy, tend to get in the way of the actual storytelling. The old movies had music, sure, but it was seamlessly integrated into the story (such as High-Ho, or You Can Fly!), which the new movies only succeed in doing about half the time (Beauty and the Beast and Part of Your World, for example).
This is just my opinion, but I guess you could say the recent movies don't have the 'Disney Magic'. They are damn good, but in a different way (Beauty and the Beast probably came the closest to classic Disney). I really came to realize this upon watching Lady and The Tramp back to back with Pocahontas. The former has very few real musical numbers, and the ones that are there are comparatively low-key. However it moves along wonderfully and is incredibly endearing. The most memorable things about the latter are the incredible visuals, the animation of Pocahontas, and "Colors of the Wind". Mainly "Colors of the Wind". Of course Pocahontas pales in comparison to the 4 renaissance classics, but the format is the same.
Of course, like I said, that's just my opinion. And, like I said, I still love those 4 great films of the renaissance. I just felt the need to express my thoughts on the issue.

Beauty and the Beast (10/10), followed by The Lion King. (9/10)
...did anyone like THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME?
I loved that movie.
The opening "who is the monster and who is the man" was pretty spiffy, and i thought it was probably the most adult Disney movie i had seen. I couldnt beleive some of the places they went with that movie, like Frollo (great villian!) lusting after Esmerelda, and just hearing swearing in a Disney movie blew me away.

Funny...I have no real interest in any of the post-Walt animated features (i.e. everything after "The Jungle Book"...except "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh," since he oversaw 2 of the 3 shorts and devised the overall concept of eventually combining them into a feature with an epilogue). I do, however, have some sentimental feelings for "The Fox and the Hound" (it was the first movie I ever saw in a theater) and "The Rescuers" (I memorized is read-along-with-the-record storybook as a child).
Many of the more recent features, it seems, try to be too much 'in the now' (I still cringe when hearing the oh-so-early-to-mid-90s phrase 'NOT!' in "Aladdin").

That scene bothers me every time i watch it. Its the only song in the film that i dont like, but there were enough other cool things to love about the movie to overcome it.
...the song Frollo gets on the other hand is extremely daring for a Disney movie. Probably the best villian song in thier history.
The COURT OF MIRACLES "..where its a miracle if u get out alive!" song wasnt that bad either.
The opening song/scene where Frollo kills the mom, and is stopped from doing the same to the baby, also rocked my socks off. Very well done.

I thought Hunchback and Mulan were incredibly underrated with some deeper songs that aren't as catchy as things like Under the Sea, which might be the reason for them being a little under the radar. I really liked them both. But then again, I'm just an uber Disney fanboy, and I pretty much love all of their animated films...other than the sequels of course.

Recently rewatched Pinocchio. And that's the best Disney movie. No doubt in my mind. Too bad I can't change my vote.
On the subject of Hunchback, recently rewatched that as well it goddamn is it good. The gargoyles were only a bit distracting, most of the movie is so strong and so mature (probably moreso than any other Disney movie that I can think of), the good just totally outweighs the bad. Frollo's song ("Hellfire") and the ending are both incredible.
EDIT: Changed my mind again---Bambi's the best Disney movie. Followed by Pinocchio.

I voted Alice in Wonderland since The Lion King is a remake of Osamu Tezaku's (sp?) Simba the White Lion from the 1960's. Early storyboards for "The Lion King" show that the main Lion Kimba was in fact white like it's anime counterpart which came first. So in fact it's my own opinion in which The Lion King is a vastly overrated film.

Well here's something I'm sick of hearing. "Remake" implies a remaking of the story, not similarities between the character designs and certain shots, however uncanny they may be. And beyond those uncanny similarities, there's no substantial connection. The two stories have almost nothing in common. If The Lion King is a remake of anything, it's Bambi. When the movie was being pitched, it was usually described as a mix of Bambi and Hamlet, in Africa.
