Taken from the Wikipedia article on Dimebag Darrell

On December 8, 2004, while performing with Damageplan at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio, Dimebag Darrell Abbott was shot and killed onstage by Nathan Gale. Abbott was shot a total of five times, at point-blank range in the back of the head. He was 38 years old.

Three others were killed in the shooting: concert attendee Nathan Bray, 23 of Columbus; club employee Erin Halk, 29 of northwest Columbus; and Damageplan security guard Jeff "Mayhem" Thompson, 40 of Texas.

The band's drum technician, John "Kat" Brooks, and tour manager, Chris Paluska, were also injured.

According to police, Gale fired a total of fifteen shots, taking the time to reload once, remaining silent throughout the shooting. When security staff tried to stop him, Gale fired at them, wounding Paluska, and killing Halk, who had attempted to stop the gunman with a beer bottle as a weapon. Damageplan head of security Jeffery Thompson fought with Gale for a short time, stopping him from killing Vinnie Paul Abbott and John Graham, as well as knocking off Gale's glasses (preventing him from seeing Officer Niggemeyer just minutes later), before being fatally wounded by Gale. Audience member Nathan Bray, who jumped onstage to try to give CPR to Dimebag and Thompson, stood up and took a single step towards Gale before being shot a single time in the chest. Brooks was scuffling with Gale onstage but was overpowered and taken hostage in a headlock position. Brooks was shot several times (once in the right hand, his right leg, and his right side) while attempting to get the gun away from Gale. Five officers came in the front entrance led by officer Rick Crum, and moved toward the stage. Officer James D. Niggemeyer came in through the back door, behind the stage. Gale only saw the officers in front of the stage; he never saw officer Niggemeyer. When the hostage moved his head, Officer Niggemeyer shot Gale in the face with a police-issued 12-gauge shotgun. Gale was found to have 35 rounds of ammunition remaining.

During the rampage, nurse and audience member Mindy Reece, 28, went to the aid of Abbott. She and another fan administered CPR until paramedics arrived. Dimebag Darrell was buried at the Moore Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, Texas.

In May 2005, Officer Niggemeyer testified before the Franklin County grand jury, which is routine procedure in Franklin County after a police shooting. The grand jury did not indict Niggemeyer, finding that his actions were justified.

Niggemeyer received a commendation from the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission for his outstanding police work in time of crisis as well as The National Rifle Association award as 2005 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. The five other officers that were first on the scene received Ohio distinguished law enforcement medals for their brave work. In 2006 James Niggemeyer penned the foreword to A Vulgar Display Of Power: Courage and Carnage at the Alrosa Villa.

Early theories of motive suggested that Gale may have acted based on the Pantera breakup, or a public dispute between Abbott and Pantera singer Phil Anselmo, but these were later ruled out by investigators. [3] Another theory was that Gale believed Abbott had stolen a song Gale wrote. In the A Vulgar Display Of Power book, several of Gale's personal writings, given to the author by Gale's mother, show that the motive of Pantera's breakup or the idea of stolen songs is false, and that due to his condition, paranoid schizophrenia, he believed that the band could read his mind, were stealing his thoughts, and laughing at him.

still fuckin tragic!

i am glad that Vinnie Paul came back to music though, as it didnt seem like he would after this whole thing.

Has anyone heard from Phil Anselmo since he made that video where he breaks down?

Phil did another Down cd, and is still involved with Eyehategod, and Superjoint Ritual.

Vinnie did come back to music, but what he's doing now is weak in comparison to Pantera, and even Damageplan - I don't think he'll ever be in a band as well known as either of those.

And since I updated on the others - Rex Brown is in Down as well, and I'm not sure, but he may also be in Superjoint.

Officer James D. Niggemeyer

Damn, what an unfortunate last name, especially for a cop.

The worst thing about being a rock star is you can't determine who will love or hate your music. For every Beatle Bob there's a Mark David Chapman. This Gale fellow wasn't so obsessed with the band that he decided to kill one of their members onstage. This guy was a sick cat to begin with. He just used them as an outlet for his insanity, and when everything seemed downhill, he just lost it. Because that's what sick people do, they choose something to become obsessed with and when that something somehow disappoints them, they just can't take it anymore.

didnt know he was with EYEHATEGOD... what does he do with them? (dont own any of their cd's but have heard their music)

have him and Vinnie settled anything.. or are they also still at the end of their ropes with each other?

and i agree about the Hell Yeah comment... they are lackluster in comparison with the original bands in which the members respectively come from.

I'm not sure to what capacity Anselmo is involved with Eyehategod, He may just be a producer, but I know he does contribute somtimes lyrically, and vocally - and to note, He used to play drums in a metal band sometime before he was invited to join Pantera.

I doubt Vinnie will ever reconcile with Phil, I mean, Phil said in an interview that someone should beat Dimebag until he died, and months later, someone DID murder him; on the anniversary of John Lennon's death too.

Rita Haney (Dime's common law wife for nearly 20 years) HATES Phil, and told him that if he were to show up at the funeral, she'd shoot him with a shotgun.

I think it's kind of funny (well not 'haha' funny) that Gale killed Dimebag because he "was the cause of Pantera's demise" - basically saying he ran off Anselmo - it's funny because Pantera wasn't Phil's band, it was Dime and Vinnie's, and to some extent Rex's, since Dime and Vinnie started Pantera, and Rex was with them for at least a year or two, before they hired Phil (who they technically could have done without, as Dime was a decent singer). Gotta love the fans who know everything.

R.I.P. Dime!

The thing about Dime was - He was an even better person than he was a guitarist, you could see that in any of the Pantera home videos, or DvDs...if you needed something, Dime was cool about it, if he didn't know you, he'd invite you to hang out and drink with him...he wasn't caught up on money, he wasn't arrogant, he was fucking cool.

I remember reading a story about Dimebag doing a guitar clinic somewhere, and there was a kid there who went to get an autograph, and the kid mentioned that he wanted to be as good as Dimebag was on guitar, so Dime said to the kid "What kind of guitar do you play?", "I don't have one yet" said the kid....Dime started playfully goading the kid's dad "c'mon dad, get teh kid a guitar - make it an early Christmas gift." - The Dad spoke in a hushed tone that he couldn't afford a guitar, and that they could barely afford food. Dime told his entourage to make sure the kid and his dad stayed after the clinic and signing, and told the music store owner to give the kid the BEST starter guitar and amp kit they had there...on him.

That my friends, is a guitar god.

I think I read about this first on this forum. Pretty frightening when it happened. I'm glad there haven't been any cases of copycats.
