So the year's not quite over yet, but I'm going ahead and posting my top ten..

http://musicmedia.ign.com/music/image/article/782/782533/year-zero-20070420054504097.jpg
1 - Year Zero / Nine Inch Nails

Reznor seemingly grows up, but doesn't outgrow the noise. Year Zero isn't a perfect album. It could be a little more diverse lyrically (Trent still seems stuck on his themes of the "down on your knees" variety). It is an album, however, that can be spun and appreciated more and more every time. I like records with a unifying vision, and while Year Zero isn't The Wall, the cycle of songs on here are powerful and anarchic. This is a very well-realized post-GW Bush, post-9/11, post-Iraq album. Reznor here also finally regains the majesty and power his music had in the The Downward Spiral days, finally finding the perfect balance between pop, industrial, avant rock, noise and knob-twiddling.

http://www.avclub.com/content/files/images/dungen-tio-bitar.jpg
2 - Tio Bitar / Dungen

Dungen just seem to go from strength to strength. This record is jammier than their last, 2004's psych song-feast Tat De Lught. It's still the best-produced and best-sounding album of the year. Frontman Gustav Ejstes sings in Swedish, so I don't understand a whit of the lyrics, but it's so great to get swept away in tracks like "Familj" and "C Visar Vagan", and I defy you to not bang your head to "Mon Amour". Bonus: Ejstes' side project "Life On Earth!" came out this year and is also really kick-ass.

http://cdn.last.fm/coverart/300x300/3275953.jpg
3 - Drums & Guns / Low

No album got more under my skin this year. The songs of Low will never be everyone's cup of tea, nor will their lyrics (first line: "All the soldiers / they're all gonna die", and later "our bodies break / and the blood just spills and spills"). Musically, they adopt ghostly electronics and drum loops, but there is little actual emphasis on such sonic garnishing, they're just used to color the songs. And the songs? Some of Low's bleakest in years, which somehow fits our traumatized, blood-soaked times.

http://prettygoeswithpretty.typepad.com/pgwp/images/2007/10/28/radioheadin_rainbows_front.jpg
4 - In Rainbows / Radiohead

I was fully prepared to not like this album. As a longtime 'Head fan, I was less than impressed by their last LP "Hail To The Thief" and the accompanying tour. Snippets I was hearing seemed to signal that this would be a return to form for the fivesome, and it turns out, it is. The band keeps it trim at 10 songs, and what results is a satisfying record that rewards continual listening. After years of abstract electronica and genre experimenting, as well many promised returns to the "rock" sound of olde (which is still only glimpsed sporadically here) Radiohead finally get back to what they did best, which is win you over with their bizarre vision.

http://www.stereogum.com/img/pe_pjharvey.jpg
5 - White Chalk / PJ Harvey

PJ Harvey makes lots of critics year-end best list with just about all of her records. This is her first since 1998's Is This Desire? that actually deserves it. Not content to keep penning the same tried and true distorted blues rock and scorned woman style songs that's she does so well, Harvey strips her tunes down to just her rudimentary piano playing and higher than usual singing. What sounds like a disaster on first listen will eventually make it's home in your subconcious, as Harvey finally makes good on all that foreboding and dread always hanging around the edges of her music. Like Trent Reznor and Radiohead alike, Harvey seems to have learned how to morph her musical idenity while still making a well balanced and fully-realized album. In other words, these 3 have learned how to exist and survive, AND still remain relevant, in a musical environment that is increasingly disposable and hostile to originality.

6 - Autumn Of The Seraphs - Pinback
7 - Liars - Liars
8 - Era Vulgaris - Queens Of The Stone Age
9 - Mirrored - Battles
10 - Planet Of Ice - Minus The Bear

I agree, Year Zero is the best album of the year.

I don't have a top ten yet, but I have a top 3 probably.

1. Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero
2. Panda Bear - Person Pitch
3. Feist - The Reminder

Those 3 albums have been at the top ever since I first heard them. All three are phenomenal efforts.

Haha, I don't even think I've listened to 10 CDs from this year. My favorite from this year was the new Ryan Adams. He has my forgiveness for that Gap ad he did a while back.

A little Muse goes a long way for me. But the first song on that record, "Take A Bow", is completely fucking amazing.

I almost listed Smith's "New Moon" in my top ten, but decided not to. Awesome set of songs.

Something else that came out this year is the reissue of Enon's first album "Believo", from 2000. Fantastic record, and much better than their release this year.

Have to also agree that this was a great year for new music, I don't care what anyone says.

Sadly, I haven't listened to enough 2007 albums to form a Top 10 list. From all the albums I have listened to, however, The Arcade Fire's brilliant Neon Bible would be my #1 album of this year. It's been awhile since an album has truly mesmerized me. Whether in my car, at home, on the computer, in my iPod, I simply cannot stop listening to the album. And Neon Bible has been in my possession since its release date. Funeral was a terrific album and all, but I believe The Arcade Fire outdid themselves with Neon Bible. It's an outstanding album. I love it to death.

Overall it was an amazing year for music, metal in particular. Almost all of my top 10s are albums I never thought would be there. Iced Earth really made a comeback after their last really shitty album, Nightwish proved that they don't need Tarja, Rush released their best album since 1989's Presto, Threshold surpassed Dream Theater as far as prog metal bands go, Spellblast stepped up to the plate of folkish power metal after Elvenking released a horrid turd of an album, Dark Moor released a collection of some of the most catchiest songs I've ever heard EVER and I've never really gotten into any previous albums by the band.
