It was a year of metal, death metal and screamo for me, as I discovered (through friends and random recommendations) the following:
Killswitch Engage
DevilDriver
Kalmah
Parkway Drive
and Job for a Cowboy
What a year its been. I probably lost a lot of hearing this year too because of it. But it was worth it. Most of the bands I dont understand (Kalmah, Parkway and Cowboy) but I just love the screaming and the pounding drums and wailing guitars. Kalmah is just really awesome. Most of their songs start out almost like its classical music and then it just kicks into hardcore ass kicking metal and screaming. I really got turned onto Killswitch though. Just an overall great band. Definitely my new favorite band of the year. However, my favorite song of the year has to be 'End of the Line' by DevilDriver. That song starts out a bit classical itself but then they just totally kick it up with pounding double foot drums (or whatever they are actually called) and the guy screams for like 30 seconds and its just awesome. Thats all there is to it.

Is this your first immersion into metal?
Not really. I knew more well known metal bands like GWAR and others before this year. But this year I found out one of my friends listened to the type of music I listed and I listened to it with him and I guess I just have an ear for it cause I love it now.

Great band called Midlake, who's album "The Trials Of Van Occupanther" came out in '06 but got heavy rotation this year in my iTunes.
Also got turned on to some cool new bands like Masarati & Oceansize, as well as some older stuff like Frank Zappa and Jethro Tull.

I barely caught hold of the Black Lips in 2007. They're probably my favorite modern garage band.
Also got into Trenchmouth. A band that heavily influenced At the Drive-In and Mars Volta. but I like Trenchmouth better. More self restraint on their stuff.
T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rhthmo de Cotonou. Good afro beat jams. You'll be bobbing your head to this all day.
Also got into Fantomas. The best death metal band. They know when to back off and do pretty, haunting stuff and then go into the heavy jams. Not to mention, they did a great version of the Godfather Theme on their Director's Cut album.
Two bands I had heard before but hadn't started really listening to till this year was the Melvins and FEAR. Two great bands. Love em a lot. I don't know why I didn't get really into them before, oh well... I'm just happy I did.

I discovered loads of music this year, because 2007 was a year of music for me. Prior to this year, I never put much thought in music as film occupied most of my spare time. But, thanks to one band all of that has changed.
Brandi Carlile Band really is responsible for introducing music into my life.
I've also really gotten into:
Tegan and Sara
Missy Higgins
