Asian movie star, Byung-Hun Lee, has been cast as Storm Shadow in Paramount Pictures’ GI JOE. He will be playing a character with a dark and complex history who is one of the most popular and enigmatic characters of the GI JOE universe. According to GI JOE lore, Storm Shadow was trained by the same Ninja master as Snake Eyes, a member of the elite GI JOE team, but now fights against him.
Stephen Somers will direct the live-action feature based on Hasbro's line of action figures. Lorenzo di Bonaventura will produce with Hasbro chief operating officer Brian Goldner along with Sommers and his partner Bob Ducsay serving as producers as well. Hasbro's Goldner said that the mythology of G.I Joe was fleshed out during the 1980s through 155 issues of Marvel Comics, as well as an animated TV series. There are about 30 core characters, good and evil, that can be exploited in films.
Lee Byung-hun made his debut in 1991 starring in TV drama Asphalt My Hometown and has since become a widely known actor in Korea and many Asian countries.
He made his movie debut in 1995 with "Who Drives Me Mad?" Though quite popular already from his television work, his real breakthrough came in 2000 with movie "Joint Security Area." The movie, at that time, was the highest grossing film in Korean history. He then starred in "Bungee Jumping of Their Own" in early 2001. These 2 movies had won him multiple awards, including the prestigious Blue Dragon Award and Dae-jong Award. Other tv credits include Happy Together (1999) and Beautiful Life (2001), which were popular in Korea; and later on built his international fame when the dramas were shown in other Asian countries. He became one of the most talked about stars in Asia when he dated popular Korean actress Song Hye-kyo, his co-star in highly rated TV drama All In (2003). Their relationship ended in 2004. Lee’s later movie like Everybody Has Secrets (2004) and A Bittersweet Life (2005) were quite well received as well.
Having recently attended the Tokyo International Film Festival to promote his new romantic comedy, “Everybody Has Secrets,” Lee and his co-star Choi Ji-woo were swarmed by 300 photographers and 800 reporters at the press conference.
"Rachel Nichols has been cast as Scarlett in the big screen live-action adaptation of GI JOE. Scarlett is one of the original members of the GI JOE team, she is skilled in martial arts and hand-to-hand combat and specializes in counter-intelligence."
