Yesterday I was standing in line at the grocery, listening to SUMMER DAYS AND SUMMER NIGHTS (an album of such staggering genius that, I'm sure, God himself has a listen when he's bored) and some fucking ASSHOLE metal dude standing next to me snickered.

I told him to get a haircut, but that's beside the point. Apparently listening to these guys is uncool (but watch the fucking THOUSANDS of pink floyd shirts kicking around for whatever reason...)/

Clearly these guys don't enough love and I'm sure it has a lot to do with the fact that, superficially, they are a very hokey and happy-go-lucky sounding band. Insofar as every group from that era was, I think they should be cut a little slack.

The fact is, The Beach Boys have churned out some of the most infectious and beautiful music in the sixties - randing from ecstatic, to moody to just plain weird.

I think its one of the more unfair cases of pigeon-holing artists from the past.

Some folks just don't understand... they're too caught up in a certain "image" they simply can't embrace other kinds of music. It's impossible for them. Personally, I find it rather ignorant.

The Beach Boys are one of the most influential artists ever. Period. Pet Sounds, man... now that's a ground-breaking album if i've ever heard one.

The Beach Boys rule, end of story. Some of the catchiest, most relaxing music I've ever heard.

I saw this one idiot demanding her money back for Pet Sounds because "It only had a few hits." Now that infuriates me.

Even if for some reason they don't like listening to them, anyone who can't acknowledge the greatness of the Beach Boys is an idiot.

Fuck the Beach Boys!

lol... what morons. I love the Beach Boys. They had a sound all their own and they didn't copy anybody. They might have had a friendly rival with Beatles, but it pushed them to make their music better and they progressed a lot as a band... Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile are awesome albums and God only knows where we'd be without them. They're a quintessential band in my opinion... everybody should at least hear one record by them at least. But that's the problem with kids nowadays... they all try to hard to be tough and are so afraid to listen to things that aren't "cool." Bunch of idiots. That's why mainstream radio has gone to shit. It all sounds like a bunch of babies playing instruments crying about not getting what they want.

Brian Wilson was a genius and his downfall was one of the worst things to happen in rock. At least he's playing shows again--good for him.

And yes, I hate how Pink Floyd and Queen have become the cool bands to namedrop over the last few years. I guess when God Only Knows is covered on American Idol it'll be different for the Beach Boys, but I'm tired of people claiming to love classic rock bands when they know three songs.

I just got into an argument about this last week with a coworker. He stated he hated the beach boys and I stated that he was out of his mind.

This has nothing to do with someones opinion, it does however, have everything to do with the lack of respect (and credit) given to these great artists. I can understand someone not liking the certain kind of music, that really doesn't bother me any... it's the disrespect I don't stand for.

The problem is most people assume they disappeared after "Good Vibrations" (just as most people assume Fleetwood Mac didn't exist before Buckingham/Nicks...or Pink Floyd before Dark Side of the Moon...or Genesis before "Follow You, Follow Me"). The fact is they still made some really good music after that. And the other members of the group began to write their own music to pick up the slack for Brian (his kid brothers Dennis' and Carl's tunes were especially good...rest their souls :(). Unfortunately, after their '73 album Holland, that bastard Mike Love grabbed the reins of the group and basically turned them into an oldies nostalgia act...irreparably damaging their reputation . At least Brian had enough sense to jump ship before things got too pathetic (i.e. "Kokomo," Summer in Paradise ).

The Beach Boys really span a lot of ground musically, similar to the Beatles. I think I agree with the notion that anyone who doesn't like 'em hasn't heard the right song from 'em.
