LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Pop star Britney Spears was taken to hospital for tests to see if she was under the influence of alcohol or drugs and for a psychological evaluation after police were called to her home Thursday night to mediate a custody dispute, a police spokesman said.

Spears appeared to be conscious as she was rolled out of her Studio City home on a gurney about three hours after police and ambulances arrived there.

The children were returned to their father, Kevin Federline, who has primary legal custody of the two sons, a police spokesman said.

Doctors at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles will decide whether to invoke a California law that allows a patient to be held for psychological evaluation for 72 hours, the police spokesman said.

Aerial video provided by local television station helicopters showed Spears on a stretcher and surrounded by police and paramedics as it was rolled to an ambulance near her home.
Spears has been in a heated battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline over custody of their two sons, Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1.

Federline, Spears' former backup dancer, holds primary custody of the children. Spears has been in trouble with the court earlier concerning her compliance with court orders in the custody case

I'm finding the whole sideshow rather distressing to watch, and the papshots on the front page of the British rags this morning show a very unstable and vulnerable young woman.

Like ilovemovies said, she clearly needs psychological help...and I wouldn't be surprised if she is suffering from all manner of mental illness and otherwise...from post-natal depression to bipolar disorder.

She is not fit to be a parent at this moment in time...but to be all "bitch outta die" based on the fact that she's a rather minor annoyance and is quite obviously going through a life crisis of sorts is pretty heartless and pathetic.

Right now it seems to be solely a drug problem, but there are other factors in play. She comes off as narcissistic, borderline, hypomanic, having a conduct disorder, schizoid, histrionic.... All of these can be attributed to drug use/dependence though. However, the sad fact is that once, or if, she does come clean, she has more than likely learned these traits and they will now be part of her personality, and in turn justify a nice mental illness diagnosis. She wasn't born crazy, she inadvertently trained herself to be crazy.

Sad. Even sadder is that none of her family, friends NO ONE has stepped in and had her committed before this. If anything, her behavior and poor choices have only been encouraged by on-going attention.

That's true, but my point was that it's impossible to diagnose this woman because she's high off her gourd. Maybe she could be any of those things, or maybe she's just a brat... You can't know until she's sober,because with her chemical use, the entire book is wide open. Of course, the dx might precursor the drug use, but without one in place beforehand, the only choice is to dive in and deal with the drug use, which is the prevailing issue.

Before considering borderline, or anything, you'd want to rule out cocaine or amphetamine related disorder, both of which fully cover all her weirdness.

72 hours isn't enough. She needs a good court-ordered 28-day detox program, followed by some probation that includes random drug testing. The only problem with that is that if it's court ordered that means some damage has already been done. I say again, it's a fucking travesty that the people around her have allowed it to get this out of control.

TMZ has learned Dr. Phil's visit with Britney Spears was not exactly as advertised.

People on the 7th floor at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center say the Doctor arrived at about 7:30 AM Saturday. We're told Britney did not invite him in; she didn't even know he was coming. Sources say it was Brit's parents who told Dr. Phil to go to the hospital. When he walked into her room, we're told, a blindsided Britney walked out -- and eventually came back.

Sources say Phil tried speaking with Spears for about 15 minutes -- not an hour as Dr. Phil's press release states --but she wanted none of it. We're told Phil was doing almost all the talking. As for walking with her to the car on her way out -- again as his release states -- we're told, if he was walking behind her, that's news to her. She absolutely was not accompanied by him.

Sources say Dr. Phil somehow convinced Brit's mom and dad to be on his show, which will tape Monday and air Tuesday (it was just moved up a day), but, as one person put it, "Based on the interaction between Dr. Phil and Britney this morning, it'll be a cold day in hell before Britney goes on his show." We're told she absolutely will not appear on the program.

Sources say Dr. Phil wants to do a television intervention, something that isn't sitting well with some of the people who have known for a while that Britney has a very serious mental condition -- likely a bipolar disorder that is now in the red zone.

TMZ contacted Cedars to find out why the hospital let a television doctor on a floor that has such fragile patients, particularly since Britney had no idea he was coming. LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― Troubled star Britney Spears has walked out of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, ETOnline.com reported. The Web site reported Spears left the Beverly Center-area facility through a secret tunnel to avoid paparazzi.

Another Web site, TMZ.com, reported that Spears pulled intravenous tubes out of her arm and screamed at medical workers during a day-and-a-half stay at the hospital. Hundreds of paparazzi and fans had followed Spears after she was strapped to a gurney and taken by a motorcade of Los Angeles police and paramedics from her home in the Hollywood Hills to the facility.

ETOnline.com reported psychologist Dr. Phil McGraw paid a visit to the star Saturday morning. McGraw told ETOnline.com that his hour-long meeting with Spears left him "convinced more than ever that she is in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention."

"I am very concerned for her," McGraw said in a statement posted on the Web site.

TMZ reported that the hospital was forced to release Spears after its medical personnel determined she was not a danger to herself or others. California law does not allow people to be jailed unless medical workers can prove that their behavior is dangerous, and even then limits such holds to 72 hours unless a court hearing is held.

Attorneys for her former husband, Kevin Federline, used evidence about her Thursday night refusal to hand over her two sons after a visitation, and subsequent meltdown, to yank her visitation rights with the boys.

A court commissioner on Friday gave Federline sole physical and legal custody of 2-year-old Sean Preston and 1-year-old Jayden James, and suspended Spears' visitation rights.

Commissioner Scott Gordon's ruling came a day after Spears was hauled away from her home by paramedics after police had to intervene when she refused to return the children to Federline after a court-monitored visit.

Gordon ordered another hearing to be held Jan. 14.

Federline had previously been awarded temporary custody of the boys because the 26-year-old pop singer has defied court orders, resulting in limitations on her visitation.

"I'm not happy about any of these events," Federline attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan said when he left the closed-door emergency hearing Friday afternoon. "There's no winners here."

Kaplan said he went to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after Spears was admitted, but he declined to provide any details about the pop star, her ex-husband or their sons.

Los Angeles police Officer Sara Faden said Saturday that Spears was hospitalized "for her own welfare," but that she had no additional details.

Cedars-Sinai spokeswoman Simi Singer refused comment Saturday, citing patient confidentiality rules.

The drama began around 8 p.m. Thursday when officers were called to her home to help resolve a dispute over her refusal to turn the children over to Federline as dictated by their custody agreement.

It took two to three hours to resolve the conflict, Los Angeles police Officer Ana Aguirre said.

"Police resolved the conflict," Aguirre said. "Both children were turned over to her ex-husband Kevin Federline for custody, and she was in fact taken to a local hospital for medical treatment."

Early police reports said officers thought Spears might have been under the influence of some substance, but Aguirre said there was no evidence of that.

"Our understanding is that was not the case," she said.

Officers at the scene determined that paramedics "needed to be called" but it was unclear why, she said.

"We're not aware of any type of injuries that she sustained" and she was not combative with authorities, Aguirre said.

Spears wasn't arrested in connection with the custody dispute, she said.

"There was no actual crime that was involved," Aguirre said.

Spears and Federline married in October 2004. Her life has spiraled downward since their divorce in July. She has been photographed without underwear and appeared to be drunk and out-of-control in public. She shaved her head, beat a car with an umbrella and spent a month in rehab.

She had hoped to regain her pop crown with a much-hyped performance at MTV's Video Music Awards in September, but it was universally panned by fans and critics.

Still, Spears latest album, "Blackout," earned positive reviews when it was released in October and brought Spears her first No. 1 hit in years, "Gimme More."

HOLLYWOOD - Britney Spears refused to dress for police after ending a crazy bathroom standoff with her son last week, insisting she was "too hot" for clothes.

The pop star was committed to a Los Angeles hospital after what is being called a breakdown, brought about by her ongoing custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

And now police sources are speaking out about what took place when they showed up in a bid to prompt an emotional Spears to hand over her child after her visitation term had ended.

Insiders tell TMZ.com Spears spent three hours locked in the master bathroom of her home with her youngest son Jayden James.

The Web site reports that when the pop star did give up to police, she was wearing nothing but panties and put nothing on but a see-through dress.

When police tried to cover her with a sweater, she screamed, "Don't cover me up. I'm f**king hot," according to the report.

The source reveals Spears was mostly incoherent, screaming, "What the f**k are you doing in my house?" and "I don't need your f**king help" at the authorities.

The singer's assistant, who was present for the standoff with police, told officers Spears had been "popping" "vitamins" all day.

Officers found a bottle of Prozac in her bedroom, according to TMZ.com.

Her longtime companion, Sam Lutfi, arrived on the scene and told officers he "knew this was coming for a long time," but didn't know how bad it would be.

He told the authorities that Spears had been extremely unstable and had recently purchased a house in Malibu, California, on a whim, began moving furniture in and then changed her mind.

The police officers are expected to testify about the incident at a custody hearing on Monday.

Singer Britney Spears has been taken to hospital by ambulance from her home in Los Angeles, police have said.

A police officer told Associated Press that the pop star was being taken to hospital to "get help", but did not say which facility she was being taken to.

A UCLA medical centre spokesman refused to confirm she had been admitted there.

Earlier this year Spears, 26, was admitted to hospital after refusing to surrender custody of her two sons in a stand-off with the police.

'Mental issues'

The star was released from the Cedar-Sinai Medical Center after a day and a half. The details of her medical treatment were not revealed.

Sole custody of Sean Preston, two, and Jayden James, who is one, was awarded to Spears' ex-husband Kevin Federline after the incident.

The singer was also denied visitation rights to her children.

Earlier this week, US talk show host Barbara Walters claimed that Spears has been receiving treatment for "mental issues".

She said Spears' manager Sam Lutfi had told her the singer was suffering from psychiatric problems that are "treatable".

"She has been having mood swings. She's been having trouble sleeping," Walters said on her show The View.

TV therapist Dr Phil McGraw, who visited Spears during her hospital stay last month, said at the time that he thought she was "in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention".

McGraw, who cancelled a planned TV show on the singer's predicament, was later criticised by Spears' family for speaking publicly about the matter.
