Sometimes everyone says that some movie is complete shit and when you actually watch it, you wonder why people dislike it so much.
Last year's new version of the Body Snatchers theme, Invasion, is by no means a great film. It's too flashy for it's own good, too fast paced at times, and it's obvious due to some "creative" choppy editing and strangely varied take on the material that the film indeed had two directors and a lot of studio meddling.
But still, I really liked it. Good actors, some sharp ideas and writing (that were created for this version only), nice visuals and good sense of creepy paranoia. And yeah, I thought it was very suspenseful at times, and always entertaining.
The film does get off the rails a bit in the 3rd act when it suddenly turns into an action movie - The expensive action segment is ironically the least suspenseful segment in the entire film, despite the fact that it was added only because the studio wanted to spice up the proceedings. It's a good action scene on it's own, but feels off in this movie, and it's not as engaging as the film that preceeds it.
Anyway, I would give Invasion a solid 7/10. A flawed movie, yes. But taken as a horror/scifi/action combo that even has some interesting ideas to offer, it was engaging and entertaining.
Kaufman's 70's version is still the best one, but I felt this take on the story was so different from the previous ones, that comparisons are rather unnecessary.
Am I the only person who liked this movie?
