"National spelling bee champion Evan Odorney took time off from his busy schedule of hooking up with girls to appear on CNN. And he proves that he is also a champion of social skills."

Hahaha... That was the funniest interview I have ever watched. That kid is never going to get laid. This is what HOME SCHOOLING does to these kids.

Also, check out his interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSojmWBwwnk&feature=related). I would mess with him too! Jimmy Kimmel rocks.

Wow. Just... wow.

That poor kid. He's going to be in the same place I'm at right now when he grows up.

Except he'll be a better speller than me.

Pretty old but still funny. He's an arrogant little prick, isn't he?
This kid's father failed miserably.

Homeschooling is just another excuse to get smothered to death by Mommy and Daddy...

The spelling bee should be on ESPN. I mean, they have poker...:D

He's either autistic or developing a case of latent inhibition. I'll probably trail off now so I sound smart even though I just got the 'latent inhibition' diagnosis because the kid said he saw all the inner-workings and mathematics of objects when he looked at them ala Michael from Prison Break, and Michael has mild latent inhibition, and ...
We should arrest the kid to see if I'm right.

If he's autistic, I feel kind of guilty laughing at those interviews. But if that's not the case, these videos should be shown to anybody who thinks homeschooling is a good idea.

You know, it's sad even if he isn't autistic. Maybe it's because I used to be like that a little bit.

I do think it's funny to watch - especially the Jimmy Kimmel interview.
"Were you excited when you won?"
"Not really."
"On a scale of one to ten, how excited were you?"
(15 seconds of pure silence)

That was comic gold!

However, he is slightly autistic, which is why he's so strange. That and he's home schooled. That probably only adds to his social ineptitude.

I've always been against home schooling.

For some reason, I didn't find the first video funny. The Jimmy Kimmel video was funnier.

He has Asperger's... So it makes sense why they'd even want to home-school him. Kids are cruel.

And it doesn't seem like Kimmel was so much messing with him as trying to liven up the interview.

I don't care if he is autistic, he doesn't have to be a dick in the first interview.

I don't care if he is autistic, he doesn't have to be a dick in the first interview.

I don't think he was a dick in any way. It's typical for autistic people that they just bluntly say what they think is true. Social finesse and all the different shades of interaction between normal people are not something they understand very well. There is nothing mean-spirited about it, it's simply the *only* way of interacting with people that they have.

The Jimmy Kimmel interview was very illuminating in this sense, as half of the time the kid didn't really seem to understand what Kimmel was saying, or why the audience was laughing. He didn't have a very good grasp of what irony or sarcasm mean, and seemed to take much of what Kimmel said literally. And when Kimmel asked him to scale an emotion on a scale of 1 to 10, he just blanked. I would guess that the concept of giving grades to emotions was something that was alien to him and he started thinking really hard how to grade his amount of excitement.

He was trying to make sense of things in terms of pure literal logic, failing to understand the different layers of interaction that normal people notice immediately.

I have to feel a bit sorry for the kid, as he is normal enough to understand how different he is. Life will be a struggle for him once he turns from a boy into a man.

... Sean, unless you know what AS does to people, please don't say he was being a dick to her in the interview. AS makes it extremely hard to function around "normal" standards.

Dang...

Thanks for your post Tuukka, I definitely agree with you.

I understand where the homeschooling comes into play. Kids are evil nowadays.

In his defense, I can't think of a spelling bee champion that WASN'T socially awkward. Spellbound would be a good example of that

Dedicating years of your childhood to winning a spelling bee certainly does take its toll on your social life.

Do we know if he was home schooled because of being autistic, or if the autism came later, possibly even a product of being home schooled?

There's a lot of theories about where autism comes from but essentially it's a communication deficiency, which can be attributed to a lack of relevant social interactions, a common claim against home schooling. Autism isn't like mental retardation, where you are necessarily born with it --- In most (probably all) cases it develops, though genetic scientists don't want you to believe that as there is still much more research they want to do.

Tweek

My sister got diagnosed with low-functioning autism at three. So... Yeah.

There are different schools of thought on where autism comes from. There's those who say it's because of development. Some say because of vaccinations. There's people who say it's simple genetics. It's a difficult thing to even even diagnose let alone find out what causes it.

I'm sorry - I was referring specifically to Asperger's which is generally diagnosed more toward school age. Usually with straight-up autism (?), the developmental problems are more obvious because of reading and speaking problems, whereas Asperger's seems more behavioral. I think most Asperger's sufferers can go undetected, and when treated they focus more on social training, whereas 'general autism' the treatment focuses more on being taught in different ways.

Not totally sure, because I've only dealt with these issues in adults, never with children.

Tweek

whereas 'general autism' the treatment focuses more on being taught in different ways.

Yeah there are psychotropic medications that are used sometimes. Also sign language among other things.

And Asperger's does go undetected and misdiagnosed a lot. I guess because it seems so much like simple social anxiety.
