My fellow schmoes...

I bring you old, but historic news...

After a little over 10 years of a "i own more property rights then you" fiasco. The greatest cartoon of the early 90's is FINALLY COMING TO DVD! DUCKMAN!

Yes, thats right, Duckman is coming, and he will bring a wave of excellence that will shatter Futureshop, Bestbuy, HMV, Walmart and many, many more DVD racks for eons to come...

If any of you schmoes grew up with this show, as I did...You know how great this is. 70 episodes of uncensored, 5 minute rant, and pelvic-thrusting dances that is Duckman.

My proof? Why I thought you would never ask :)

Duckman - Studio Exec VP Goes on Record: Duckman Coming to DVD!
Date Not Yet Revealed, But It IS In The Works!

Our good friend Susanne Ault, of trade magazine Video Business, has put together a new story posted yesterday at VB's website, titled "CBS DVD to increase its release slate: Label plans to roll out 105 to 110 titles". In it, Susanne discusses how CBS DVD "now retains creative oversight over series from former sibling Paramount Television, including Beverly Hills 90210 and Twin Peaks, and Showtime, home of Dexter and The L Word...(and d)espite Viacom and CBS now being separate companies, Viacom's Paramount Home Entertainment and CBS DVD work together, with Paramount handling sales and distribution and the two companies sharing marketing duties." This, by the way, is essentially why we here at TVShowsOnDVD tend to refer to releases as being from "CBS/Paramount", due to the shared nature of the production and distribution.

Susanne's article goes over how CBS DVD intends to release 13-18% more TV-DVD titles in 2008 - roughly 105-110 planned releases - as compared to their 2007 slate. In it, she covers three major pieces of news for fans. Two of them concern HD DVD-format releases, and we've posted about those separately. The DVD-specific news in Susanne's story, though, will bowl over fans who have been waiting for a release for a looong time of...Duckman!

Klasky-Csupo (Rugrats, The Wild Thornberrys) produced this 1994 animated series, with a cast that includes the voices of Jason Alexander (Seinfeld), Gregg Berger ("Grimlock" from Transformers), singer Dweezil Zappa, Nancy Travis (Becker) and Tim Curry (The Rocky Horror Picture Show). It is currently the 83rd-most-wanted unreleased series among TVShowsOnDVD voters, and has massive support around the internet for a home video release. It looks like this is coming out at long last. Here is what Susanne's story says:

(CBS DVD Executive VP and General Manager Ken) Ross hopes to keep satisfying consumer demand through 2008 with the release of Duckman, a cult '90s animated program. An online petition for the series' DVD bow has garnered more than 7,000 signatures.

"There has been a level of fan demand for this show for a long time," said Ross, who declined to specify exact reasons for the DVD release hold-up. "We really had to wrap our brain around figuring a way to do it."

Exact street date or pricing has not yet been set for Duckman, but it's possible that multiple seasons will be released within one package next year.

"Our philosophy is that we are TV, so we are going to work harder than anybody to try to find a way to put a series out if there is a demand for it," said Ross. "We bring that same mentality to any and everything we can do."

That last statement by Mr. Ross is quite an extraordinary one, and here at TVShowsOnDVD (and with the help of our owners at TVGuide.com), we invite him and CBS DVD to keep in direct touch with Gord and myself to stay further in tune with what is on the minds of fans, and try to brainstorm on ways to make it happen. If they want our help, we would love to provide it!

In the meantime, we know Duckman fans are dancing around the room in celebration of this terrific news, but as stated we do not have a release date yet. It's safe to assume we'll see it in 2008, and we hope to break that news to you just as soon as we can. So stay tuned!

Oh, and straight from the genius himself, the creator of the Duckman characters, Everett Peck.

Duckman - Character Creator Everett Peck Reveals More About Duckman DVDs
Gives his thanks to Fans, and to the Studio Exec, for making this happen!

Following our story the other day that Duckman is coming to DVD, we received an e-mail from reader Ryan Maxwell, who talked with Duckman creator Everett Peck after seeing our story! Ryan passes along this quote from Everett:

Yes, it's true! My agent and I have been working closely with CBS to get this to happen. It looks like initial release will be seasons one and two. There will be some value added material but I'm not quite sure how that will shape up at this point.

We confirmed the above quote directly with Everett, who said it was okay for us to pass along the above, but didn't have anything to add publicly except his heartfelt gratitude for everyone who helped make this happen:

I do want to say I'm very pleased that Duckman is finally coming to DVD, It's been way too long. I get emails all the time from people all around the world asking when Duckman will be on DVD and now I can finally tell them. I'm very grateful to Ken Ross at CBS for pushing this forward!

It's way too early, of course, to have anything more than that, but it's good to know that the first release will consist of the first two "short" seasons together (13 eps for S1 and 9 eps for S2, so 22 episodes total). The 3rd season was longer then those (20 epsiodes) and then the final 4th season was the longest of them all (28 episodes, for a total of 70). So those seasons would probably each get their own separate DVD releases, we would think. I guess we'll find out for sure as CBS DVD's plans come together and get announced! Stay tuned, and we'll update you as developments occur.

I hope the schmoe community agrees with my statement as this being some of the greatest news in DVD history. Now all they have to do is get their shit together and realize how much money they would make by releasing the early 90's version's of Spiderman and X-Men...God I loved those shows.

What are your thoughts on this?

Who the fuck is Duckman?

Is he a lame rip-off of Darkwing Duck?

It's that cartoon with Jason Alexander channeling his Costanzangst into the bill of an animated duck. I only know it because something I used to watch came on after it, and I'd catch the end of many an episode (with no urge to watch from the beginning). I'd rather see Howard the Duck on DVD, myself.

I'm a huge Duckman fan but even I wouldnt say it's the "Best news in DVD history.." it's pretty kinda awesome, and I will buy it. Then thrust my pelvis. And that'll be it.

It's quite saddening to see that so many people aren't familiar with this marginally popular (yet 3-time Emmy nominated) TV Cartoon.

It's an awesome show and when it does finally arrive on DVD I highly suggest many of you blind buy it. It will be worth it. It was truly kind of a pioneer before the days of shows like South Park or Family Guy.

It's about a chain-smoking, boozing, perverted Duck (voiced by George Costanza- erm, I mean Jason Alexander) who works as a Private Dick along with his partner, Cornfed the pig, who is infinitely more qualified for the job than he is. He has two assistants working in the office: Fluffly and Uranis, two sickeningly sweet stuffed bears...and the gag is that he kills them in almost every episode (long before Kenny from South Park). At home, he lives with his sister-in-law Bernice, who hates his fucking guts (he is widow), his dimwitted son Ajax, and his conjoined twin sons, Charles and Mambo. He is a terrible father, but hey, he tries. His arch nemesis appears every so often: King Chicken (voiced by Tim Curry), which were always good episodes.

It really was just such a well-written show, despite it's raunchiness. Some episodes even packed a surprising dramatic punch. The last season did get a little lame though, and I can see why it was cancelled at that point. The very last episode had a cliffhanger ending, which I guess I won't talk about here, but yeah, it was never resolved so it ended the series quite uncomfortably.

But seriously, I would highly recommend this....it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I personally think it's a great show. And comparing it to Dark Wing Duck is like comparing South Park to Bob the Builder.

It insanely pushed the envelope for primetime cartoons. And the ones still around today have a lot to owe to it, I think. Like, for example, you know those Bob Hope/Bring Crosby themed episodes of Family Guy "Brian Griffin and Stewie Griffin In Road To______" complete with the musical numbers? Well, Duckman did that first. Not something to brag about, since those episodes are stupid IMO, but still, it did it first.

Great show.

If you've never watched it, forshame.

"Boo-freaking-hoo. Like I am supposed to take women and how they feel seriously? You ought to be accepted for your minds but you throw a hissy fit royalé if someone isn't saying you look great 30 hours a day. You say you want a nice guy but you only give it up to the creeps. You get to stay home, not go to war, live longer, and have sex whenever you want! So remind me again what exact is there to complain about!"

i give you duckman, now get excited

but i am with skynet, no date? no reason to get excited yet

one of the reasons was that it was not a kids show. duckman was made for adults with all kinds of unPC plots and characters. I'm surprised that let this on usa for so long but I'm sure a certain exseinfield star had something to do with it. I could only watch it when I went to my dad's, who had cable. The pig assistant was funny too, with beatrice being a walking nightmare to duckman. who voiced her?

I'm happy to see many of you know Duckman and what the show was and is still great for.

It is true that no set date may have been said, but the news is still very exciting for fans like myself. Howard the duck is on DVD, isnt it? But only in R2?
