View Full Version : The Most Tragic Film Character Ever?!
God of War
03-04-2008, 04:31 AM
There are a few of them that fall into this category. First to my mind is Darth Vader. Talk about living the life of tragedy. He loses his father and mother. Loses his aunt. Turns evil. Kills his lovely wife. Gets mutilated almost beyond hope by his life time pal, Obi Wan.
What other movie characters are tragic?
The Elephant Man
Eraserhead
Ellen Ripley

Gollum/Smeagal
Anakin Skywalker's descent to Darth Vader certainly fits the tragic hero -- also Hamlet.
I would say Michael Corleone is more tragic than Fredo
Daniel Plainview certainly seems to fit the definition of a tragic hero also

If you're talking about a tragic hero, in the traditional sense, then yeah, I'd say Michael fits the bill more than Fredo, as was (obviously) the intention. But I've always been more emotionally affected by and to some degree more interested in Fredo. He's born into a life that he couldn't be any less suited for, and despite being the older brother, is passed over by his family and friends for his younger brother, who's better-suited for the mafia life (whether he immediately knows it or not). These unfortunate circumstances destroy him mentally and emotionally, and leave him a pathetic, miserable character who makes mistakes, despite trying to make good, and is eventually held with disdain by the people surrounding him, most notably Michael. Perhaps he's not tragic in the way Michael is, but he's certainly a far more sad character, in my eyes.

Well said, I agree Fredo is a sadder character or I suppose a character to actually pity as well.

Yeah I'd say so myself... Hey look by the way don't know if you're into books but The Godfather's Revenge really delves into Fredo's character and his love/hate relationship with Mike.
Also, I'd like to mention Montgomery "Monty" Brogan from 25th Hour played by Edward Norton. I just can't help but feel bad for the dude. And for some reason Carlito Brigante just popped into my head from Carlito's Way.
