Ahh the joys of moving and your dvd collection. With 1200 plus dvds this is quite the portion of my move. So we are moving to a new townhouse next weekend so I started packing today, I only got tv seasons and movies to the letter F done and I am already out of boxes.
I am thinking or reorganizing my collection at the new place as it seems like the perfect time to do so. I am thinking maybe by genre.
Anyone else have the wonders of moving.
Also it means since my collection is going to be boxed up this weekend I am watching borrowed movies, netflix movies and burned movies for the next week.

I moved to Baltimore md from Louisville ky for college about three years ago. I havent moved my DVD collection out of my parents basement yet. haha. I just grab about a hundred or so new ones every time i visit. The fucking crime in this city... I'll transfer them all when i graduate and move somewhere else.

Moving is such a pain. Setting things up sucks unless you have dedicated shelves for your DVDs. I had to make some wall shelves at my place and it's not enough space. So I decided to put my favorite movies on the shelves in my room and keep the others ones downstairs for now. My favorite part is picking which discs get to go in the room.

One time me and my mom were going down the highway and this guy was apparently moving his collection to he only had them in cardboard boxes and it was in the back of the pickup truck underneath a chair soon as i know it we had to swerve to keep from running over them because the box went flying. I cringed at the thought of losing my dvds like that.

90% of my DVDs are in CD binders.
My actual DVD cases are in boxes, 5 big ones. In storage.
I used to think it was cool having them all on display, but really all it does is take up lots of space. I care about the movies, not the cases.
Helps with moving, too. I am not living long-term anywhere for a while, so screw all the shelf space that's wasted.

I just moved my DVD cabinets from one side of my room to the other, and even that was a pain. Putting them all in boxes, then unpacking them again right after. Sorta sucked.

I've had to move my collection a couple times. I keep my entire collection in alphabetical order (at it's peak was over 1200, after selling a bunch I'm now at 979). When I pack, I pack backwards while keeping them in order (so they can be put back up in order of #-Z) and I also check it against a print out of all my DVDs to double check that they're still in correct alphabetical order and that I still have all of them. Then I number each box and keep them in order (last move was 12 small UHaul boxes), and don't close up the boxes till the last day in case I want to watch one before moving day. When it's time to put them in the UHaul, they go in first and up in the "Mom's Attic" section and secured tightly. That way when all the crap in the main section is moving around and crushing everything else that's valuable to me, my DVDs are safe and out of the fracas. Yes, I am that anal; but only about my DVD collection.

As many may have seen (from the pictures in the pictures of your dvd collection thread) I have nice big bookcases for my collection (I am up to 4 tall ones and one half one currently) and the new place has a nice little cubby along the entire living room wall that I am going to place the books cases.
Its been only about 15 months since I last moved so hopefully this will be the last time in a really long time. I remember when I was 18 and moved for the first time I could fit everything in the back of my car. No furniture, no appliances, very few electronics. Now I couldn't put my dvd collection in my car much less stuff like my 50" tv or all my furniture.

I just moved at the beginning of January, and my collection was at 1100. I think we counted 50+ DVD boxes. We had so many because we used smaller boxes, so that they weren't as heavy to transport, and we have over 300+ Tv shows, and those take up a lot more room.
They've all been unpacked and there was no damage :)

I will be feeling your pain soon as I am in the market to buy a condo. I don't have close to the amount of DVDs you have, but I do have my share.

Wife and I just moved from Houston to Austin. To do it we went to Sam's and bought this set of 25 nice sized boxes(don't remember the dimensions) By the time I got my 800+ dvd colelction packed we had used over half, just for the dvds. You never really realize how heavy dvds are till you have to lift them in bulk. Thankfully none were damaged.
P.S. When I moved to Houston from Corpus Christi, I made the mistake of packing my entire collection in 2 huge boxes. I was so freaking nervous the entire trip, and was convinced something would happen to them.

I am just about to move again and am not looking forward to it. The last time I moved (about 2 1/2 years ago) I had about 250 DVDs, so it wasn't horrible. Now I am closing in on 700 and have a homemade shelf that is 5ft wide and 6ft tall. It holds everything, but I think I am going to hire movers this time...

I moved up here from Florida, i just went to Walmart bought 3 big ass bins for 11 bucks each.. and they fit my 1500+ (at the time) DVD collection in them. Plus they stack easily and are easily moved! Just HEAVY as fuck!

I can't even begin to imagine how heavy that has to be, thats insane. My 50" tv is heavy enough for me, that bastard ways over 100 pounds and is a plasma. I can't even imagine how people with those big ass rear projection tvs ever moved them, those things are massive, heavy and thick. The Plasma can be moved by two people even if its heavy as hell.

I helped my buddy with one of those giant TVs about 7 or 8 years ago and it took about 4 of us to get the damn thing into his house! It was a surprise for his father. It took all day to do that and set it up with the cabinet and shit.

I am moving to Washington at the end of the month and sold 250 DVD's today and ebay'd all 75 of my HD-DVD's. I will get rid of 250 more before I am through.
My number hit 2000 right on yesterday.

I remember the last time I moved - I bagged all the DVDs in carrier bags, so that they'd keep in order:

If I can remember right, there were around 450 - 500 dvds, at the time, so I'd hate to imagine the difficulty with 1200, 1500 etc, etc. I suppose 'tis just a matter of getting it over with, and then getting 'em back out asap :)

Moving DVDs is a pain, but I think movie CDs is way worse. They get real heavy very fast.
Last time I moved I had 700+ CDs and 400+ DVDs, give or take. Not to mention a gazillion video games, all still in cases, like 25 or so Sega Saturn games.
Pain.

I have like a 100 video games between NES, SNES, N64, gamecube, and xbox but that all went into one box fairly neatly.

My 56" projection was pretty easy to move (it weighs less than a 100 pounds). The only problem was my sony vega which had the old crt tube, and that weighed way over 100...and it was all in the front.
As for my dvd's I have them all in smallish cabinets that you can just tape the doors closed and move it with a hand truck.

that would work awesome, but I am just not a big fan of cabinets.

I put mine into normal moving boxes, but they always ride in the car with me, I never put them in the moving truck!

Ugh I hate moving DVDs...I mean, I don't have a bagillion of them like some of the others here, but I do have a few hundred which is always a hassle. I'm moving into a new place in about 2 months which means I'm going to have to move them again. Which sucks. I mean, seriously, My DVDs alone fill up my largest suitcase which leaves little room for clothes or anything else. And I don't have a car. So It's going to be difficult. Though I always do keep a few back home. Most of which I don't think I will watch any time soon- or doubles.
But I think the worst thing was, back when VHS's and DVDs still sort of lived in semi-harmony, when I was younger and my parents were divorced, I would move back and fourth to each house each and every week. So that meant I had to pack my favourite tapes and DVDs (as well as some I felt I might want to watch), EVERY. FUCKING. WEEK. That was harsh and I'm actually laughing at myself in hindsight for doing something so silly...packing so many movies. Ah, movie nerds.
But anyway, moving DVDs sucks. Some of my earlier DVDs are very out of shape from being moved around so much.

One of my bookcases need to be repaired before it could make the move, so it got left behind so all I got set up was half of tv seasons and all my dvds that weren't on my box set bookcase.
Living room is a mess and full of boxes been watching tv on my office chair. That is the joy of moving right there watching edited movies on regular tv on a 50" plasma because you haven't had time to hook up a dvd player yet on an office chair because the coach is buried under a pile of boxes.
