View Full Version : Why do we get 2 disc editions of movies?

I've always wondered why people will go out and buy a 2 disc edition for more money. I mean how many times are you really gonna watch the bonus features of "the making" or "gag reel" or something. Unless it's something like the 5 disc edition of Blade Runner or 3 disc or Oldboy, whats the point of buying 2 disc? No offense to anyone, just wondering.

They usually have the better cover art. And for a collecter, at least to me, its a big deal.

Depends how good the features are. Besides, for an extra 3 bucks even though you might only watch the special features a couple times, its better value.
And yeah i gues its more of a collecting thing. and Generally re-releases of dvd's that have 2-discs generally have a better transfer aswel. There's always exceptions though.

Considering that 2 disc sets are usually only slightly more than the 1 disc releases, it seems like the best way to go imo.

I buy them only if they are good. For instance the Superbad and Knocked Up 2 discers are the best I own because they just have some great features. I just get anal about it because the 1 disc doesn't have anything but a few trailers, and commentary(which I hate) , but the second disc is usually a lot better. I just like having them.

I rarely buy the 2-discers but when I do its usually almost always worth the extra $3-$5.

i always buy the 2 discers! I am a collector, and for some reason if there is a superior version available, i must own it! This leads to double dipping sometimes.
Now the kicker is.. i rarely EVER watch the special features.. i generally just watch the flick... but i MUST own the best version available!
the only 2 i held back on were: War Of The Worlds (Tom Cruise) and Jarhead.. and that was because the 2 disc versions were DOUBLE the price upon release.. that was an extra 17 bucks... i aint gonna do that!
and another thing thats pissing me off is now on Tuesday... HITMAN is being released.. the 2 disc is fucking 6 bucks more expensive... but the second disc is ONLY the digital download of the flick... its a fuckin waste of money.
But i think the special features are only available on that 2 disc set... 20th Century Fox sucks cock for doing that

That pretty much sums me up, too.

Picture quality is the biggest deal-breaker for me (see Escape From New York), but sometimes if the 2-disc is a LIMITED edition it can be a valuable collector's item if it goes out of print (several Fox SEs like Moulin Rouge, Fight Club, Independence Day etc.)...

I miss the good ol days when movies only had one initial release, so you werent missing out on anything when making your purchase. I think Batman Begins was the first film I had to choose between the 1 disc and 2, and I went with the 2. I rarely buy the 2 disc versions anymore, but don't get me wrong I'll splurge every once in a while on the 2-disc if its a film I really enjoyed.

I don't always get the 2-disc -- only if either the features or the source material (original feature) are worth it.

I prefer the 2-disc editions most of the time because they're a better value, and I do watch the extas sometimes. Mostly it's because commentaries are usually on the SEs, instead of the bare-bones versions.

I buy the two disc most of time because I'm collecter and the most of the good stuff comes with the two disc. I don't mind paying the extra money unless it's huge difference.

Every time I watch the movie I usually watch the special features afterward, even if I've seen them.

sort of like why do people buy multiple copies of the same version of a film like Saw?????????????

I buy movies that I enjoy and have an interest in. So I like to watch the special features to find out more about the filming process, etc.

I agree 100 percent, I wish they would go back to the days where there was one initial release too. I have pretty much given up on the 2 discs unless it is a movie I love, or the quality of the features makes the purchase worthwhile. With most of the 2 disc versions released now it's just not worth the extra money to me.

exactly, how anyone can buy a bare bones single disc edition with a shitty cover for $17, instead of the 2 disc super director's cut next to it for $21 is beyond me. Thye shouldnt even offer the single disc versions

Yeah, those are some cool packages (yeah, even that ID4 one). I might be wrong but those were also released back before studios got really shifty by putting out the quick bare-bones release then putting out the extra special super duper multi-disc editions months later. (I remember the Fight Club DVD release being delayed a few months after the VHS so that they could finish assembling all of those cool extras that I still haven't fully explored several years later.)
I'm probably like everyone else though: if it's a film that I really dig, then I'll go for the SE. Lately I've found it better to wait as some retailer like Best Buy will offer it at such a markdown that it's not a big deal.

No Love For Two-Disc Sets?
By John Latchem - March 9-15, 2008 issue of "Home Media Magazine"
Some studios have a habit of releasing two versions of a movie on the same day - a vanilla disc and a two-disc special edition. Not that it matters to Target stores, which has usually stocks only the single-disc version. Two recent releases have fallen into this category.
Anyone looking for deluxe editions of "Justice League: The New Frontier" or "Into The Wild" at Target is out of luck. A salesperson at a Santa Ann, Calif., location wasn't too helpful in explaining this policy, and the company's web stite hadn't even listed "Into The Wild" yet.

Yup, basically. I check out the differences between the Special Features between the bare bones and the SE, and it has some that interest me, I'll get the 2-Disc.
Unless it's a Judd Apatow movie, I'll always go for the 2-Disc SE (like Knocked Up, Superbad, 40 Year Old Virgin, etc)

Its funny I always go for the two disc. I mean always. Unless its an Apatow movie. The reason I like the second discs is because of all of the info about how they make the movies. Same reason I like commentaries. Apatow movies never have anything worthy on the second disc for me and have some of the worst commentaries ever. I know I'm in the minority but fuck me, I can't take a joke. :D

2 Disc For Me Always

This is something I debate over all the time. Part of is the true collector and wants the best version of the dvd for my money as most of them only cost you an extra $3-5 more and another part of me is the practical sort that says when was the last time you ever watched a single special feature. To be honest I can't even remember the last time I watched a deleted scene, it has to be more than a year.
So its become a strange procedure that decides when to go with the 2 disk over the 1 disk versions. Sometimes its cover art that decides it for me, if the 2 disk version has better cover art I always get the 2 disk version (it satisfies the true collector in me as well) for example I hated the cover art on the 1 disk Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer so I bought the 2 disk version instead as I liked the cover art more (and have yet to watch the dvd or any of the special features).
Sometimes its money that decides which one I get, for example if there is 5 movies I want released all on the same week, one diskers will win so I can get them all. Sometimes it is because I truly loved the movie and want the best version available. Sometime I am roped in by gimmicks, cool things on the box, or a digital copy of the movie (I bought the 3 disk American Gangster for the digital copy but I get screwed on this a lot as I want a digital copy I can put on my ipod and more often than not its just a .wmv file thats incompatible with ipods which is beyond stupid to me, American Gangster was like this).
Sometimes it is the actual special features I buy it for, as I recently bought the 2 disk Memento limited edition for that easter egg that allows you to play the movie in reverse order which would be awesome to see.
And sometimes its a steelbook and all steelbook versions must be bought.

First: I always watch/hear teh extras. I am a kind of extra-junkie ;)
I try to get the 2-disc (or 3 or 4....) when:
#1 I am not informed about the quality of teh extras (I am an optimist) and have no time/opportunity to inform me fastly about them
#2 I know there are making of's/featurettes... that interest me (usually when special effects, film making + pre- production featurettes and so on included)
#3 audio commentaries of involved ppl, who interest me, in especial the director or depending on who it is, producer, certain actors/actresses.... as better as they describe the film making details as better. Not interested in, who was friend with whom...
#4 better video/audio quality
#5 alternative versions/scenes + deleted scenes
#6 longer movie version / directors cut
and so on.
Sometimes I only watch the extras, in especial if the movie/acting/story... does not really interest me, but how they did certain details.

It's a case-by-case situation for me:
If the 1 and 2 disc versions are released simultaneously, I'll check to see if the 2 disc is worth getting. I look for bonus features like deleted scenes or an extended cut of the movie. Video transfers are usually identical in these cases. Commentaries and most documentaries/featurettes I am not going to watch a whole lot.
If it some 2-disc/special version that has been released well after the initial release of a movie (aka a Double-Dip!), my biggest prioritiy is if the video transfer has been improved. If it is a significant upgrade in that area, I usually will pick it up if I can get rid of my old copy with little problems and the price is right.
I really dig that they put all these special features out for the hardcore collector. But 90% of the people who buy them don't really watch any of them. The movie studios are just squeezing extra $$ out of people who think they need the extra crap. I am guilty of falling for this trap a few times myself, but I try to educate myself on the releases as best I can.

I always want the best and if I can afford to I get the best. It's like having a choice between "coach" and 1st class on a flight. Obviously if you can you choose first class not "coach"!

I mainly only care about the film. In fact, The Departed is the only movie I went out of my way to get the 2 disc version.

It's all about the cover. If the cover is better for the single disc, I'll get the single disc. If better for the 2 disc, I'll get the 2 disc.
