"Monsters vs. Aliens" Picture and Cast Info.

USA Today has revealed the cast and a new picture from the upcoming "Monsters vs Aliens." Still a year from release (March 27th, 2009), the new movie will be the first computer-animated feature to be shot in 3-D. Studios such as Disney convert their films into 3-D, but only after a non-3-D version is made.

"This isn't our father's 3-D," says the DreamWorks animation chief, Jeffrey Katzenberg. Though it still relies on funny glasses, "the digital projection puts a perfect image on the screen. There is no ghosting, no eye strain or nausea."

"Monsters" tickets will cost more because the process adds about $15 million to a film's budget, but Katzenberg believes audiences will pay for "a premium experience." That includes hearing Reese Witherspoon as Susan Murphy, a modern-day California girl who has the bad luck to be hit by a meteor on her wedding day and grows to be 49 feet, 11½ inches tall (a wink at 1958's The Attack of the 50-Foot Woman). Captured by the military, she's renamed Ginormica.

Joining her to fend off Rainn Wilson's evil alien Gallaxhar are Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D. (Hugh Laurie), the jellylike B.O.B. (Seth Rogen) and the half-ape, half-fish Missing Link (Will Arnett). Kiefer Sutherland speaks for Gen. W.R. Monger, and Stephen Colbert is the president.

Looks cute. When I first heard about this I thought it would be an attempt at something more epic and/or serious, but this actually looks cute. Original premise, no more of Dreamworks' cheap talking animals schtick... also, with a concept like this one gets the impression that the studio will also manage to avoid their overly irritating dependence on pop culture-humour.

This is what I'm thinking! I'm sold on this movie because of that!

Well... that, and: "the half-ape, half-fish Missing Link (Will Arnett)."

I dunno why but I'm not normally that excited for animated movies before they come out (never been truly excited about a Pixar film before it came out except for Wall-E)...but as bad as this sounds considering Wall-E is clearly more ambitious, I'm actually looking forward to Monsters vs. Aliens more just based on the two pictures that have been released. In fact, it's probably gonna be on my most anticipated list next year.

It just looks...wildly entertaining. And the cast is absolutely wicked. In addition to the above names I believe Paul Rudd is also voicing a character.

Nice to see an animated film break the stereotype tape and do something off the wall. Can't wait.

Colbert as the President? Brilliant, and yet ironic. Looking forward to watching his show when this movie comes out.

3D animation was cool as hell with Beowulf, and this movie looks like it could be a lot of fun.

W.R. Monger? How precious.

Dreamworks has yet to even come within light years of Pixar, so I'm not too excited. Yet.

Yep.

Can't wait for this movie. The last two originial Dreamworks films impressed the hell out of me (Over the Hedge and Bee Movie both won me over for some reason), and the cool premise and great casting have me wanting to see this so bad.

Will Arnett, Seth Rogan, AND Hugh Laurie, not to mention Sutherland, Colbert, and Wilson, in an animated film involves monsters fighting aliens? So fucking there.

DreamWorks has launched the official site for the upcoming animated "Monsters vs Aliens." At this point, it only contains the cast list and a plot summary, but you can also check out a fun little intro, which is presented in old monster movie fashion. Here is the full plot:

When California girl Susan Murphy (Reese Witherspoon) is unexpectedly clobbered by a meteor full of outer space gunk, she mysteriously grows to 49-feet 11-inches tall and is instantly labeled a "monster" named Ginormica. The military jumps into action, and she is captured and held in a secret government compound. The world learns that the military has been quietly rounding up other monsters over the years. This ragtag group consists of the brilliant but insect-headed Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D. (Hugh Laurie); The macho half-ape, half-fish The Missing Link (Will Arnett); The gelatinous and indestructible B.O.B. (Seth Rogen); and the 350-foot grub called Insectosaurus. Their confinement time is cut short however, when a mysterious alien robot lands on Earth and begins storming the country.

As a last resort, under the guidance of General W.R. Monger (Kiefer Sutherland) - on a desperate order from The President (Stephen Colbert) - the motley crew of Monsters is called into action to combat the aliens and save the world from imminent destruction.

"Monsters vs. Aliens" is scheduled to hit conventional and 3-D IMAX theaters on March 27th, 2009.

hopefully this aint just another 'lets cast big stars before we have a story, and have the marketing based around the names of a-listers in our film instead of the characters in it' film.dreamworks are pretty meh to me atm, i have had trouble seeing a decent film from them since the first shrek. although over the hedge was ok.

When I first heard about this film, I wasn't sure if it would be worthwhile. However, the cast and the original (a DW animation first!) concept have won me over. With this, Lovely Bones, and Watchmen, March 2009 is looking really good. Nice to see studios spreading out their bigger films so we don't have to wait months and months between the worthwhile releases of fall and the big movies of May.

Its not up there on my "MUST SEE" list like WALL-E is, but i think itll be fun time at the movies.

I love the gaint mutant chipmunk.(..or whatever the hell it is..)

I could easily see a paraody of Cloverfeild winding up in the movie.

Looks like fun! I like "Shrek", but have not been impressed with anything else from DreamWorks, including "Bee Movie" and "Over The Hedge". Still, I want them to keep making these movies, especially when they can come up with an original premise like this one :)

Though, Pixar will remain untouchable for many more years ;)
