Stephen Daldry, the director if the brilliant-in-so-many-ways-it's-impossible-to-express-in-words The Hours from 2002, is one of those directors you wish would direct more films, and whose every film can be counted on to deliver. His next project, currently filming, sounds adequately so:

"The Reader", based on the novel by Bernhard Schlink. The story: In postwar Germany, a young man’s decades-long obsession with an older woman runs headlong into a war crimes trial, where he learns an awful truth. Screenplay is by David Hare who also wrote The Hours, and the film is being produced by Scott Rudin, Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella.

But that's not the best part. The best part is this: The two leads are none other than...

Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes.

It's like a dream come true. My all-time favourite actress and my second-place all-time favourite actor, in the same movie together. I think it's safe to say that this is automatically one of my most anticipated upcoming movies. Who knows, it may even be ready by awards season this year, and then between it and Revolutionary Road I'll be one happy camper. I swear, if Kate doesn't win an Oscar this year, I'll kill a man. I don't care who, I'll go out into the street and slash the first person I see in half.

Also worth mentioning: Cinematography aficonados will be glad to hear that the film will be shot by none other than Roger Deakins. And I swear, if HE doesn't win an Oscar this year I will kill yet another man.

Not that I don't love Kate Winslet because lord knows I do. But I was looking forward to this more when Nicole Kidman was doing it. Unfortunately, she had to drop out due to her pregnancy. Oh, well. Should still be a great movie and Winslet is more than good enough replacement.

I thought the lead was actually a character in his 20's and that it sounded like Winslet and Fiennes were more supporting turns. Especially Fiennes since he plays the main character as an adult telling the story which sounds like to me he won't have a whole lot of screen time.

I don't care if either of them are in it for 5 MINUTES, they're still two of my favourite actors and I'll see anything they do.

Besides, it may be good that Winslet's role will be a supporting one... it means she may be up against herself come Oscars next February...! :)

I've already heard some impressive buzz for her on this. Winslet does sound like she has a supporting turn, so she could very well pull of a double nom. Hopefully she is strong enough to finally win, why she hasn't already is a grievous crime.

I'm also a HUGE fan of Kate Winslet, one of those women I would want to have my children and live with for the rest of my life, plus she's an amazing actress and definitely needs that Oscar.
Ralph Fiennes as well, super-actor who needs to be in more films and needs an Oscar himself...

About the movie,

I've read the book a long time ago, want to read it again, but it's an amazing book, I loved it. Kate Winslet is the perfect choice for the seductive 'older' woman who befriends the boy, I could see Nicole Kidman in it as well, but Winslet will be more than great. Fiennes will either be narrating the film as the older boy or possibly play someone when it comes to the crime court. Damn I want to read the book, it's really great, you guys should read it definitely..

I didn't like The Hours SO much, sure it was a good film but the movie was just screaming 'YOU HAVE TO BE A WOMAN IN ORDER TO GET THIS MOVIE' so loudly that I didn't care for it as much, I did like the technical side of it though which gives me lots of hope for The Reader, as it's much more universal than The Hours when it comes to the story...

Great news, great cast, great story, can't wait.

I'm not a woman and I found The Hours to be one of the most incredible movies of recent years :) It was also written by a man (Michael Cunningham) and directed by one so that's at least two other guys who got it. Man, all this talk really makes me want to re-watch The Hours...

And of course I can't wait for this. Oh and DaMovieMan, stay away from Kate... she is MINE I tell you!!

While the two of you fight over Kate, she and I will secretly walk away ;). Anyway I was never a big fan of The Hours either.

Touchez, but you have to admit that everything about that movie is about women, I mean like, everything. The movie for what it is, is good, 7/10, and has my all-time favorite actress in the world, Streep, and a one of my favs, Moore, but still...couldn't connect with it too much..

Ah that's okay, we'll quibble over who deserves her more but by that time Kate and I would of probably made some kind of deal that includes making tbone think they'll be walking off together until she leaves him 2 hours later to rendezvous back at some designated spot with me :D

I want to have Kate Winslet's children. I hope medical science gets back to me on that. :p

I love her work and I'm glad she's doing more of it.

Hate to break this to you, guys, but Kate Winslet is married, to Sam Mendes no less.

Back on topic: THE READER definitely sounds like a worthwhile film, and I'll be certain to check it out. Even though Kate and Leo will be appearing side-by-side in REVOLUTIONARY ROAD, I have to say their solo projects (THE READER, BODY OF LIES) interest me way more.

So, producer dramas ensue, Scott Rudin abandons the project, and it seems like Weinstein is going ahead with releasing this movie December this year and pushing it as Miramax's frontrunner Oscar contender.

So why the hell haven't we seen a trailer/poster/stills from this yet?! What are they waiting for, Revolutionary Road and Benjamin Button to take all the Oscar season attention? I want to see some FOOTAGE from this film, damnit! Kate Winslet in TWO heavy-hitting dramas this year... I don't know how to restrain myself, this is like the best year ever. And the fact that this co-stars Ralph Fiennes, one of my favourite actors, doesn't hurt either. So let's see something from this production already!

Wasn't there recently a still released of Kate Winslet in bath tub?

It's not much, but it's something.

To be honest, I was never really a big fan of "The Hours". This, however, looks very strong. Both Finnes and Winselt are two of my favourite working actors. I'm loving these sort of different "views" of WWII we're getting - this and "The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas."

Wow, wow, wow, WOW, WOW!!! The Hours is one of my favourite movies of all time and as everyone knows Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes are practically my two favourite actors... I have been waiting eagerly for something from this movie, especially since it's scheduled to come out in a couple of months, and now I'm not disappointed! This looks great, definitely moves it further up my radar. Can't wait to see a poster or something! It seems unfortunate that Ralph Fiennes looks to have a very limited supporting role despite being advertised as a headliner, and doesn't really share any screen time with Winslet, but even seeing them seperately is good enough. Oh, and Kate with a German accent is awesome :)

Trailer didn't blow me away but it looks very good nonetheless.

Kate Winslet will have a terrific December though. This looks good and Revolutionary Road looks GREAT!

Looks excellent, I hope Winslet gets some Oscar attention for her role, it looks meaty enough to at least grab her a nomination. Unfortunately for her, this role and her role in REVOLUTIONARY ROAD may cancel each other out. Regardless, this film looks superb.

I think she's more of a supporting player in this movie. I hear people say that Winslet could actually see herself being nominated twice this year. For best actress for Revolutionary Road and for best supporting actress in this movie.

Looks great. Nice to see that Bruno Ganz and Alexandra Maria Lara from Downfall have big roles in the film.

Looks excellent! I think we're looking at a strong Oscar contender here, as well as a contender for my top 5 for the year. Fiennes and Winslet look excellent (as they usually do). I must admit it's odd seeing Ralph (why does he pronounce it Raif?) with long hair. It actually looks pretty good on him.

Regarding Kate: I still think she should have gotten double-noms in 2004 for Eternal Sunshine (best actress, which she did get) and for Finding Neverland (best supporting actress - major snub!). I hope her role in this film really does constitute as a supporting one: then again, the Academy doesn't hesitate to do these things when necessary, for instance nominating Jamie Foxx in Best Supporting Actor for Collateral when he was clearly the lead.

Regarding Ralph/Raif: The pronunciation of his first name is based on an old English pronunciation of Ralph. Apparently it's a name that goes back generations, some old Anglo-Saxon thing.
