Paramount puts pedal to 'Metal'
Fincher tests 'Heavy'

Paramount Pictures will make an animated film inspired by the '70s sci-fi fantasy magazine Heavy Metal, with director David Fincher spearheading the project.

"Heavy Metal" will be stamped by the erotic and violent storylines and images that remain the trademark of a magazine that debuted in the U.S. in 1977. The mag introduced the works of American artists and writers such as Robert Silverberg, Harlan Ellison and H.R. Giger.

The film will consist of eight or nine individual animated segments, each of which will be directed by a different helmer.

Fincher will direct one of the segments; Kevin Eastman, the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" co-creator who is now owner and publisher of Heavy Metal, will direct another. So will Tim Miller, whose Blur Studios will handle the animation for what is being conceived as an R-rated, adult-themed feature.

Fincher, Eastman and Miller will produce the film. The studio will lock in the other directors shortly. The mag previously spawned a 1981 animated feature and 2000 sequel.

Fincher, who directed "Zodiac" for Par, recently wrapped the Brad Pitt-Cate Blanchett starrer "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," which Par releases Dec. 19. Fincher recently became attached to direct Paramount's adaptation of the Charles Burns graphic novel "Black Hole" and is also developing "Torso" and "The Killer" for the studio.

Miller is writing, directing and producing a feature-length version of "Rockfish." Blur has also been responsible for animating such videogames as "Transformers: The Game," based on the hit pic from DreamWorks and Paramount.

This is awesome news. The original Heavy Metal was badass and Fincher sounds like an odd but interesting person to direct one of the animated stories.

Heavy Metal is one of my alltime animated movies of all time and plans for a new one are getting me excited. Heavy Metal 2000 was o.k. but not as great as the original even that was adapted from a story published by the magazine.

I want a Pixar segment scored by Randy Newman

WTF:confused:

Definitely an odd choice. I think Fincher should go ahead with other projects like Black Hole or Torso cause this seems like a waste of time for him. He could do better IMO.

The other two Heavy Metal films sucked big time. But with Fincher doing part of it I'll have to check this out.

The original "Heavy Metal" was a work of genius in terms of story telling and animation. Not to mention the fact that it has some of my favourite rock tunes of all-time! :D

This movie is actually the reason why I have a terrible fear of green orbs! ;)

This sounds pretty damn cool. Fincher AND Eastman. Very nice indeed. Plus, being animated by Blur. Also very nice. And intended to be R. Pretty much seals the deal for me

All I know is they better damned well have a Moebius story in it this time, preferably one based on Arzach:

It would really be a kick if they could replicate Giraud's delicious crosshatched style with CG, or get a team of animators who could produce it faithfully. Moebius is a cornerstone of the mag's popularity and it'd be sad if he never got a mention in one of the films.

The fist movie was cool. I'd love to see a full length B-17 movie.

Heavy Metal 2000 sucked harder than the cold vacuum of space.

An A-list Heavy Metal 3 should be pretty awesome.

Resurrecting this thread with some fresh blood: http://splashpage.mtv.com/2009/06/08/james-cameron-jack-black-join-heavy-metal-adaptation/

How do you up the ante when you already have three of the hottest directors on the planet locked, loaded and ready for your film? In the case of “Heavy Metal,” you bring aboard yet another fan-favorite filmmaker and a world-famous musician-actor hybrid.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” co-creator Kevin Eastman, also the owner and publisher of “Heavy Metal” magazine, has announced that “Avatar” director James Cameron and Tenacious D rocker Jack Black are joining the ranks of “Heavy Metal,” the multi-directorial comic book adaptation from the likes of Zack Snyder, Gore Verbinski and David Fincher (who will also serve as an executive producer).

First of all, this news is insanely awesome.

Second of all, I guess the Alien(to the third power) fumes from Cameron have lightened up? Well, Fincher himself hates Alien(to the third power), so I guess the two men have something in common, besides being two awesome modern directors.

Those two co-working on a project? How can you (gals included) not jizz in your pants?!

I'm not too familiar with Heavy Metal but who wouldn't be intrigued with a movie project that includes:

David Fincher
James Cameron
Zack Snyder
Kevin Eastman
Gore Verbinski
Jack Black
Mark Osborne
Tim Miller

Of that group, the only one I don't know of is Tim Miller. Everyone else is pretty awesome or solid.

And that isn't all from Kevin Eastman who says 3 other top quality directors have agreed but haven't formally signed but claims they're as "jawdropping" as Cameron.

...I wonder who those other 3 are...hurm...

...Rob Zombie's name has been kicked around...

EDIT: I just checked Wikipedia and they had a link to an article that mentioned that Kevin Eastman said : "Fincher is directing one, Guillermo del Toro wants to direct one, Zack Snyder wants to direct one, Gore Verbinski wants to direct one." that was from September 2008. We already know Verbinski and Snyder are in.

What are the odds that Guillermo gets in on the act? I'd love it to death but I have my doubts with his committment to The Hobbit.

Okay, I am definitely on board for this one now. Sounded kinda odd at first but now with all those directors involved, it sounds amazing.

Just one question, will it be animated or will there be real actors?

I looooooooved the first movie as a kid. The second one was good too.

David Fincher is just the right amount of a WTF decision that I am very intrigued as to how this will turn out.

Well, there is a pretty big difference between the phrase "wants to" direct, and "is going to" direct.

After all, Quinten Tarantino often talks about movies he "wants to" make, like Friday the 13th and James Bond.

I don't know if I would put a lot of faith in anything Kevin Eastman says. He hyped Heavy Metal FAKK 2 to know end for what seemed like years only to have the movie take a steaming dump on DVD and look like half-assed shit.

Trey Parker needs to direct a segment.
