MGM is planning an exciting fall and winter release schedule. In partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, MGM will bring new installments of two of its tentpole franchises -- the new James Bond movie QUANTUM OF SOLACE and Steve Martin in PINK PANTHER 2. MGM will also release United Artists' international thriller VALKYRIE, starring Tom Cruise on October 3. With the appointment of Parent, MGM will enter its new phase of evolution by focusing on its major movie franchises highlighted by JAMES BOND and PINK PANTHER sequels, THE HOBBIT, THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR 2, THE OUTER LIMITS, ROBOCOP, DEATH WISH and FAME, among others

This would've made me happy had it not been coupled with news of Pink Panther 2 :\

I think Robocop is due for a tune-up, pun intended. The original, while still very fun to watch, is dated - especially with its special effects.

And it's sad that MGM considers the Pink Panther a "major movie franchise."

Ha.

I love that MGM considers itself moving into "a new phase of evolution" that relies heavily upon regurgitating the past. Still, a film version of "The Outer Limits" might be kind of cool if done right.

i hope the new robocop is more like #1 and less like #3. a reimagining could be great if they capture that "something" the first one had

That "something" was Paul Verhoeven and Ed Neumeier. If someone could match that perfect mix of pitch black satire and ratings-be-damned violence, I'd love to see it.

I'm cool with it so long as it's a "Robocop Returns" type movie and not a remake.

I was just thinking the other day what it would be like if they remade it, and it would probably be a wise-cracking, all CGI Robo doing back flips and Gun-Kata. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail.

If they are gonig to do anything with Robocop it should be the Robocop Vs Terminator storyline, but that will never happen.

I don't believe the effects used are so much dated as they were sloppily done. I mean just look at the stop motion in The Thing, thats how you do it.

I think they should get Frank Miller involved with it, since much of his writing was cut from the second one.

For good reason. I read the Frank Miller Robocop series. It was pretty terrible.

The only way I really see this working is by getting Verhoeven back and letting him make the film he'd have made as Robocop 2. I quite like Robocop 2 for its absolute balls to the wall insanity, but it doesn't hold a candle to Verhoeven's satiric masterwork.

If they MUST find a different director (as I'm sure they will) how about Chris Cunningham? The man is a fucking visual genius and his music videos (Aphex Twin's Come to Daddy and Bjork's All is Full of Love among them) go to places both dark and beautiful. He's also got a lifelong interest in robotics. Give that man a hard R script and maybe, just maybe, you've got something.

I'm sure I'll see it either way, just to be able to write an article comparing the films for my blog, but honestly, I'm still hoping this will just quietly die.

You know, it's funny just how many people in my old High School didn't know that Dawn of the Dead, The Hills Have Eyes, or even The Texas Chainsaw Massacre were remakes. I thought everyone knew about TCM at least.

However, only a handful of kids I spoke to even knew the original DotD and THHE even exsisted.

My point is, I'm tired of unoriginality. Sure, I'm open for remakes, if quality people are behind them. However, we are drowning in them right now. Not only that, but 98% of the remakes being made range from disappointing to absolutely terrible.

I also hate having to explain, in conversation, which Dawn of the Dead, Prom Night, Halloween, The Hills Have Eyes, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville horror, [insert remake here], I'm talking about. Somebody will think I'm talking about the remake and by the time I explain to them that there is another film, made in the 70s called Dawn of the Dead as well, I've already lost them and the conversation can't continue.

When defending remakes, people usually bring up John Carpenter's The Thing, Cronenberg's The Fly, and Snyder's Dawn of the Dead. What is that? 1% of all the remakes ever made? Sure they are good, in fact The Thing is one of my favorite movies of all time, but those are just a handful.

Then again, I'm a fan of Aja and almost everything that guy has made (or is making) is a remake.

If they are gonig to do anything with Robocop it should be the Robocop Vs Terminator storyline.

Just what I was thinking; with the new Terminator movie coming out and this remake of Robocop, it would make perfect sense for a "RvT" movie with both characters now fresh in the general movie-go'ers minds.

BUT, 'doesn't mean I aint ticked off with this news, I didn't think anything when I first heard of this remake, so I'm very sad to see some progress. Hell, who knows, this movie may turn out to be good, I just wish there were some originality in movies these days.

*sigh*

Seriously terrible.

ps- for you studios- don't make a poster of your lead character when there is not a director, actor or even costume designer attatched.

Updates From Licensing International Expo 2008
Source: Compi716, Kanon June 11, 2008

In a follow-up to Wednesday's article on the displays at the Licensing International Expo 2008 in New York this week, scooper 'Compi716' sent us this note about the new RoboCop movie:

I was at the Licensing Show today, and I made sure to ask the MGM guy about 'RoboCop.' He said it is 100% going to be rated R, and, "It's going to blow everyone away. They've offered it to some really great directors. I can't say who, but wow." Sounds interesting.

Meanwhile, MTV has posted the logos that Marvel Studios has on display here. Included are Iron Man II, Thor, The First Avenger: Captain America and The Avengers.

More photos of the G.I. Joe displays can also be found here.

Haha, I actually thought this was a joke post and that photo was actually from some 1980's promo for the original Robocop that had been photoshopped. Then I checked this:

Heh, impressive use of dating. If they keep up this theme, I expect the trailer to use industrial sounds, a gravelly, grim-voiced narrator, and overlay fire onto the title's lettering. :D

"RoboCop" Remake is Officially Dead

Both the Financial Times and Moviehole have confirmed that director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler) has abandoned the "RoboCop" remake for good and that the project is now considered officially dead. This isn't really shocking news, since MGM is penniless, but it's unfortunate considering how much work Aronofsky has put in.

http://www.worstpreviews.com/images/headlines/headline17151.jpg

The movie is just one of many casualties. At this point, a new "James Bond" installment and an "Amityville Horror" remake cannot move forward. "Red Dawn" remake can't properly be marketed, and the proposed "Rocky" movie (without Sylvester Stallone) will probably never get off the ground.

As early as last year, MGM was targeting 2011 to have the "RoboCop" remake finished. Both Aronofsky and writer David Self (Road to Perdition) were working on the script and were planning to begin casting.

It really pisses me off how stubborn and out of touch the studio exes tell an already established/proven director how the film should be. In this case, these fucking idiots told Aronofsky they wanted a 3D film (and probably a toned down PG-13 Robocop at that so they can maximize the profits:rolleyes:). So of course I dont blame Darren for basically saying "FUCK THAT SHIT!" and just bail on the project. Oh well, its probably for the best anyways, I am sure Aronofsky has something else better up his sleeve (maybe Noah's Ark?)

I can understand if its some new/unproven director but Aronofsky?!?! Let the man make HIS vision you cocksuckers!
It reminded me of the studio exec idiots getting worked up over Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are.

Echo, this is exactly why a remake of Robocop will never work today. How can you top the original? It successfully blended satire with an action movie. That's a hard feat to accomplish. All the changes and notes executives would want to add to the remake would only ruin a film like Robocop. That's what's so great about it. It could never be made today without neutering the story. The budget would be too big for studios to finance a dark comedy disguised as an action movie.

I always took Robocop as a one-shot movie anyway. It's a bonafide classic.

I'd be willing to give this a try if a good crew get behind it such as Aronofsky, but all the same, why do a remake when you can create something different. It doesn't have to be completely original (because what movie these days IS?), but surely there are better things to do than to reboot a bygone franchise.

Still, I'd love to see the scary yet useless as shit ED-209 again. :p
