well, i love movies. i love seeing them, watching them, and i want to write one. buuuuuuuuuuuuuut.....for thepast few years, going to the movies isn't as much fun. i'd ratherrent it and watch it at home. why???! causepeople are soo fucking rude! they will either talk, kick my chair, or just sit right infront of me when the theatre is almost empty.

example....the other day iw ent to the definately, maybe. and some loud ass lady sat right behind and seriously hit my chair every five seconds. i was like "if you're that tall, sit in the baaaaaaaaack"...cause my legs don't even touch the chair infront of me!

and one time, i went to see a praire home companion, and i had these two people havinga normal voiced (aka not a whisper) conversation the ENTIRE movie. i had to sit behind them, lean forward and say"could you shut the fuck up for five minutes"....and then sat back down. my mom is anti shushing, so i had to do it so she wouldn't hearme. and luckily for the people, they shut up. but it should be already knownto shut up. i shouldn't have to tell them. why the fuck do people go to the movies if they want to talk? thats what dinner if for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and u ever notice, that when someone is loud or obnoxious during a movie, that they rush to leave? that they run for the door? like they knew they did something wrong??!

ok, rant over :) thanks for listening

Stuff like this is why a wait a week or two to see a movie in the theater, especially matinees, the theaters are basically empty. The last couple of movies I've seen have been only a few people - if that.

I usually don't do it during the summer, because I love me some summer blockbusters (still hit the matinees though), but most of the time, this works for me.

It's this sort of shit which is why I typically wait until the last week or two of a films release, rarely ever had any problems doing that since the really annoying shits always seem to go opening week.

Out of the three times I've seen something opening night (Matrix Revolutions, Diary of the Dead and Saw) I was lucky that there weren't any problems with noisy people in the first and no more than a dozen people in the other two.

Ok since this topic has been done a hundred times and there is like five of them on this page alone, I am going to take some time to ask a favor of you. Please use some punctuation and hit the space bar after every word you type. I don't mean to be rude but reading your post was like reading an essay by a 3rd grader. For example thepast, ratherrent, causepeople, havinga, hearme are all two separate words. Also it really isn't that much more difficult to type out three letters words than to abbreviate them. You is so easy to type and looks vastly better than u.

Can't be arsed to get up that fuckin' early :p

It was hard reading the initial post, but I agree with it. Movie-going has become increasingly more of a chore than an enjoyable hobby.

Going to the movies has always been like that though. It's just now its probably not you who's doing all that stuff.

For real though, it's always been like that. Do you remember when laser pointers first came out?

Knocked Up was a horrible theatre experience, as there were a bunch of hambones STANDING in a group by the back exit for the duration of the film. I don't grasp the drive behind paying the amount that a movie ticket costs (A lot at our megaorgasmplex theatres) just to basically hang out.

It just continues to amaze me how society can become so overly sensitive, yet at the same time grow so ignorant. It's because of such frustrating experiences that I go to the cinema maybe two to four times a year maximum. Once a nuisance has my attention, I can't concentrate on the movie anymore.

True. There was also that period of billions of years when movies had never been invented, so I guess I'm exaggerating.

Or maybe I'm implying 'always' as it relates to the person I'm addressing, as in following tenants of basic conversation skills.

Of course I could be wrong, and freakandgeek actually may be saying that going to the movies was more fun for them back in the Golden Age of Hollywood when people used to wear suits, and just in the past few months has it really started to become a drag. Man, that would have made my use of 'always' so, so wrong. That would put egg all over my face. My goodness, what's a boy to do?

For future reference though, if I ever say, "adamjohnson you're always so literal", I am referring to the rather brief time I've seen you engage in chances to be literal. I'm not actually saying that you were literal back in the Dawn of Time, nor am I implying that I watch you 24 hours a day. However, I might be referring to that movie with Richard Dreyfus, Holly HUnter, and John Goodman, though that will always be unlikely.

Har har.

What I mean is, it's become painfully apparent that going to the movies was initially a very civilized function. As society has changed however, as children have changed, it's only gotten worse and worse and worse.

As someone used to say, 'it all started when kids stopped saying please and thank you.'

I cant imagine what theaters will be like in ten years, as out culture becomes even more obsessed with 'intanst'ness. Hopefully they'll start to stay at home and real lovers of cinema will have to seek out theaters.

Ive given up with movie theatres several years ago, im only one guy and i cant possibly kick everyones ass, besides eventually someone stronger might fight back and kick mine wich is something i wouldnt like or then the cops would lock me up :P .

Anyways, i really got tired of having to hear the cellphones beeping when some retards had to have a text message chat session and didnt know how to set their phone to silent operation or then they just used their phones normally and you had to listen to the crappy ringtones, theres always atleast one of these in the theatre with you. Then we have the already mentioned chatters who talk loudly during the movie and last but not least my favorite, the jackasses who feel the need to kick the seat infront of them wich just so happens to be the seat im on.

All this would be just about tolerable if it wasnt for the fact that ( atleast in Finland ) going to the movies is damn expensive. Lets take 2 people on a friday/saturday evening, you and a girlfriend or a mate or family member, lets assume that you live 10 miles or so from the cinema so you'll want to take the car cos public transport here is expensive. You'll probably want some snacks too. So 2 x movie ticket = 22 euros, fuel cost will probably be around 2 or 3 euros more, 5 for snacks so that comes to a total of 30 euros or so wich is about 47 dollars.

So i would have to pay 47 dollars for having to sit around rude people and i cant smoke or pause the movie if i need to visit the toilet. Dont get me wrong, im no cheapskate but i do have my limits and the line has to be drawn somewhere so thanks but no thanks, i'll rather rent the movie when its out on DVD or just buy it. :)

Oh, I knew where you were coming from. Driving is a good example. Back in the 1950s, learning to drive also meant learning to be a courteous driver - focusing on right of ways, yielding.... Now it's just a test to see if you aren't a certifiable moron.

I really do think it is expectations, and I really do think it is up to everyone to raise those expectations. That's why at the theater, I practice civility and basic old fashioned good citizenship. When people are being complete shits, instead of seeking a confrontation, I'll handle it the proper way. Usually resorting to that level just reinforces the idea that it is cool to make a scene, and fuck if anyone actually would rather watch the movie.

The problem is that there's just too many fucking people, and not enough of us are keeping things in check, or just don't give a shit anymore.

I think we are on the brink of having a giant backlash toward loss of manners, and that somewhere along the way we are going to end up really uptight. Which is a shame, because I do appreciate the thorn-in-the-side spirit, but I think over the past 20 years or so it's been exploited by media trying to cash in on the cool dollar, and has gotten to the point where now you can't tell if its ever genuine or someone just acting out an image in their head. Pretty soon kids are going to be figuring all of this out, and as kids do, they will rebel, but what's left to rebel against? They'll all think they're the shit becoming bricks in the wall.

The solution is simple:

1. Weekdays.
2. Afternoons.
3. 2 weeks after the film has opened.

And if you combine all 3, I can guarantee a satisfying filmgoing experience. :)

Luckily for me, around here, people who talk during movies or kick chairs or throw popcorn won't even go to see a movie like A Prairie Home Companion in the first place.

I waited a week to see Horton Hears a Who for this exact reason and it was still crowded and full of kids, oh well. I just have gone to a weekday matinee as well I guess, except I work 8-5 M-f so uts just not possible.

Exactly! :D

If I want to see a big movie during its opening week, like I did last year with Bourne Ultimatum, I go in the afternoons. While the theater might still be crowded, there are often far fewer teenagers/children around and more genuine adults. Otherwise, I wait til the second weekend to see it.

If it's an arthouse release, I see whenever I choose; loud, obnoxious people avoid them like the plague.

BTW, I successfully avoided what could have been an awful film experience in February 2007. I was home for the weekend and my best friend and I decided to go and see THE DEPARTED at one of the cheap theaters in town. In the Youngstown-Warren area, there are two choices for this: USA Cinemas in Niles or Cinemark 8 in Boardman and both were showing the film. Since we both live closer to Niles, we chose that. Good thing we did, because look at what happened at the other theater that very day:

It was the perfect setting to watch The Ruins last night. It was 9:40pm on a Sunday, so all the ham 'n eggers had to be home with school the next morning. There was one couple, young adult, already in the theatre before us four came in.

It WOULD have been perfect, except my buddy's friend felt the need to make out loud comments in response to stuff happening on screen. This, and a dog eating from a dish chews quieter than he ate his popcorn. I hereby decree that I shall never allow him to accompany me (Directly or in a group) to a theatre ever again.

Ignorance makes me piss out my ass... then shit...

Sure annoying things happen at the cinema, but I'll never get disillusioned and stop going. It's part of the experience if you ask me. Nothing better then watching a huge screen, sound pumping all around you, with 30 or so complete strangers. No place better then the cinema in my opinion, if you stop going the jack-asses win. I'm getting excited just thinking about it. Who wants to go see a movie tonight?

Going to the movies stopped being fun for me when it cost as much to a buy a dvd. Right now the ticket prices where I live is $11 a ticket and rising. I can rent 5 movies for that much.

By the way, this topic gets posted more than any other one. Couldn't a moderator have a sticky thread for this? Kind of be like a community support board. "Post your rants here about going to the movies", or a more clever title.
Just an idea. :)
