Clint Eastwood will next direct and star in "Gran Torino" for Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures. Pic is skedded for a December release.

"Torino" marks the first time Eastwood has appeared on screen since "Million Dollar Baby," released in late 2004.

Details of "Torino" are being kept under tantalizingly tight wraps. Existence of the film, and Eastwood's role, were only revealed on Tuesday when Warner quietly dated the movie for sometime in December.

Producers are Rob Lorenz, Eastwood's partner at Malpaso Prods., and Billy Gerber. Exec producers are Jenette Kahn and Adam Richman at Double Nickel Ent.

It's unclear when the movie will begin shooting, or if it has already begun production. Eastwood is known for quick production turnarounds.

"Torino" means Eastwood will be theaters twice in a short period with films he has directed. On Nov. 7, Universal and Imagine open Eastwood's Angelina Jolie starrer "Changeling," a child abduction drama.

Eastwood last directed companion films "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Letters From Iwo Jima."

Also for Warner, Eastwood is set to direct Nelson --Variety

I really hope it's a Western. That's the vibe I got from the title.

Then again, it could be about the car, Ford Gran Torino.

Good fucking God. Eastwood is twice the age of a shitload of great directors in hollywood right now and he's doing like twice the movies they are. This guy is amazing. Easily my favorite filmmaker of all time. Fuck me. This will be a great year. Hopefully another year at the Oscars for Clinty ole boy.

everyone else is doing so why not.

rumour of the day?

Gran Torino will secretly mark the return of "Dirty" Harry Callahan in a sixth film in the franchise:

Nobody seems to know - not even the trades - what Clint Eastwood's new movie, Gran Torino, is.. So I'll tell you.

I recently advertised my 1974 ford grand torino classic original for sale in the local here, and within 24 hours had someone from Village Roadshow Pictures interested in having a look at it. He came. He wasn't interested for numerous reasons (probably the modifications). He told me they were looking for the right car for a new Clint Eastwood movie.

He said it was a thriller about a killer that drives a certain torino. His 1972 Ford Gran Torino is the only thing the police have on him. A retired police lieutenant, one Harry Callahan, makes it his mission to track down the culprit when two young police officers, one Callahan's grandson, are shot and killed by the guy.

It really doesnt matter what the movie turns out to be.

Just Eastwood being in the movie assures my ticket purchase.

LOL at how all the Awardsdaily.com people are up in arms that Eastwood is being an (in their words) "Oscar glory hog" with this new project being mentioned...maybe it will just be a good picture? I know I'm intrigued. Somebody tell these people the Coens and Scorsese already have their Oscar, no need for Clint to "rob" them, or anyone else for that matter.

Between this and Changeling, that's a short window of time between two movies...and I thought Spielberg was fast.

I'm glad he's going to be INFRONT of the camera this time and just behind it.

Filmjerk.com has a slightly more plausible idea than Dirty Harry for what this is all about :

"...this will be a simple, quiet and compelling drama about Walt (Eastwood), a rural bigot who finds his outlook on life changed after a family of Hmong immigrants move in to the home next to his own, striking up a friendship with the family's teenaged son Tao over the older man's now-classic car."

Sounds good to me. If it's for real.

And I agree with ilovemovies, I'm glad he'll be acting again.

Eastwood could be directing a fish for two hours and I'd watch it.

Could Gran Torino be a follow up to Pink Cadillac?

What if I were to tell you that Mark from North Hollywood, the fine fellow who showed off his vintage Gran Torino to some guy from Village Roadshow Pictures, might not exist, and that Dirty Harry in Not My Grandson!!! might be as close to production as The Day After the Clown Cried?

Though the wild speculation was fun, Edward Havens of FilmJerk.com is bringing us all back to reality today with word that Clint Eastwood's mysterious Gran Torino is really just "a simple, quiet and compelling drama about Walt (Eastwood), a rural bigot who finds his outlook on life changed after a family of Hmong immigrants move in to the home next to his own, striking up a friendship with the family's teenaged son Tao over the older man's now-classic car." Ah, the palliative power of an automobile made famous by a pair of 70s television cops
