FadedYouthBlog got their hands on the first photo of Johnny Depp on the set of his latest movie, "Public Enemies," which is currently filming in Columbus, Wisconsin.

Depp stars as John Dillinger, a famous gangster who the federal government attempts to take down in the 1930s. Channing Tatum will play outlaw Pretty Boy Floyd, Giovanni Ribisi will play Alvin Karpis, Stephen Dorff will play Homer Van Meter, and Jason Clarke will play John "Red" Hamilton. That quartet comprised a Dillinger gang that knocked off banks all over the Midwest during the Depression.

Christian Bale is also on board as Melvin Purvis, who was tapped by FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover to lead a manhunt that established the FBI as the country's first federal police force after the G-Men killed Dillinger outside the Biograph Theater in 1934. Bale spoke about the movie with Entertainment Weekly: "That's actually what I'm doing right now," he said. "I don't actually start until next week, but so far, just loving it, loving working with Michael [Mann], the research, the detail, liking it very much."

The picture isn't especially interesting, but holy shit an I excited for this. Mann, Bale, and Depp in a 1930s gangster film. Such a badass idea.

I saw some more pictures on set, and I got the same feeling I did years ago when images from Road to Perdition were leaked. I love films set during and about this era; subject matter is interesting, too. Can't hurt having a director like Mann on board.

I walked thru the set last night, literally. They're filming here in Chicago in my friend's apartment building, even re-did a whole section of the hallway and are in the process of changing the building facade.

They let you take any pics?

There was nobody there from production, the construction work was all done, and it is a residential apartment building so they can't restrict anything. But no I didn't think of of taking any pics, because it just looks like any 1930's era apartment building interior (which are pretty common in Chicago).

Those pictures were taken like 30 minutes away from my house. I got home today and my friend text me and said "Christian Bale and Johnny Depp are gonna be in Crowne Point next week"

So, I get all kinds of excited to find out that they were there today and yesterday. Supposedly they might be coming back next week, but I was pissed. I can't believed I missed out on meeting Christian Bale.

This reminds me of that post on the main site about top 10 dream collaborations.

I wonder if Bale-Depp, quite possibly two of the most talented and popular middle-aged actors working today, accounts as one of the greatest. I mean, these two are literally the Pacino and DeNiro of our time. This is quite exciting.

I wonder, though... does anybody know if Mann is returning to his roots and shooting this on actual film? I thought shooting digital did NOTHING good to his impeccable visual style, which deteriorates grandly from The Insider to Miami Vice. I mean, it's a 1930's gangster movie, it HAS to be on film, right...?

Highly anticipated, no doubt about it!

Indeed it is, Monotreme! In fact, Mann's collaborating with his long-time DP Dante Spinotti (Heat, The Insider, Last of the Mohicans, etc), who is noted for his old-school preference for film over digital. I wouldn't, however, discount some minor use of digital for night scenes (if then).

I must say, Johnny's looking very dapper. I'm almost reminded of how Warren Beatty looked in Bonnie and Clyde. Can't wait to see pics of Christian Bale.

I wonder who will playing a young J. Edgar Hoover in this. At the time, he wasn't the corpulent, balding transvetite we've heard about and seen in various forms. One interesting rumor--though I doubt it's true--is that Robert Downey Jr would play Hoover. I'll have to look at a photo of a younger Hoover to see if there's any resemblance, but that would be an awesome addition.

I didn't say that anything was wrhog with Mann or any other filmmaker experimenting with technology. I just said that Mann's experiment failed miserably. Fincher's succeeded. But Mann should stick with film, period.

It's odd, because I've always liked when Mann uses digital, but haven't with Fincher. That's interesting how our opinions differ so symmetrically when it comes to the use of digital.

Either way - I was going to ask the same thing. If any of the tech gods here could identify that camera in the picture above to give us a clue as to the format.

I'm pretty happy to see this film's coming out. This seems like it'll be 10 times the movie I thought Mobsters would be, and the real deal.

It hasn't been reported in the trades yet, but Billy Crudup (Almost Famous, Good Shephard, Watchment) has been cast as J Edgar Hoover. While I was personally hoping for Robert Downey Jr, Crudup (Dr Manhattan himself) is a strong choice.

Just to reiterate and add a bit more to your post.

Billy Crudup has been set to play FBI director J Edgar Hoover in "Public Enemies," the Michael Mann-directed crime drama for Universal that stars Johnny Depp as John Dillinger. Mann has also set Stephen Lang to play Winstead, the leader of the Texas Rangers who joins the manhunt for John Dillinger and his gang. Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard also star.

Crudup most recently starred in the romantic comedy "Dedication." Lang, a regular on Mann's "Crime Story" series, also worked with the director on "Manhunter" and "Band of the Hand."

In case anyone didn't know, Stephen Lang is also appearing in Jim Cameron's AVATAR, as is Giovanni Ribisi. So it looks like we'll be seeing even the lesser-known PE actors in other films in 2009.

UPDATE:

Collider were able to get their hands on a few set photos from the upcoming "Public Enemies" film, starring Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Christian Bale (The Dark Knight). I just shit myself!

Mann can do no wrong- from Band of the Hand to Last of the Mohicans to Miami Vice- I love it all...

Bale is the best actor working today- with so much promise for the future.

Depp always brings his A game- even when given silly characters.

The supporting cast alone would make for an interesting ensemble.

My only problem... I have to wait a whole year!
