ENOUGH ALREADY!!!
Is anyone else sick of this shit? I know I am.
Apatow and his band of goons have put their name on EVERYTHING it seems like. I got the oppurtunity of seeing Drillbit Taylor for free (thank fuckin God!) and it was absolutely awful. Along with Walk Hard being awful as well I gotta say that these guys are beginning to really piss me off.
The thing that really pisses me off about "From the guys that brought you Superbad" is that it is really misleading to the general public. I mean, it could be just an assisant director of Superbad behind a movie and they will sell it that way that they were behind Superbad or Knocked Up.

Hey, I'm glad the trailers are associating the film with a movie that's actually good.

I'm sorry, but nothing with the Judd Apatow brand on it has looked even remotely enticing to me. Mostly because they all seem to follow a similar pattern, at least from what I've gathered in the trailers and TV spots:
Anchorman: dumbass is a news reporter
40-Year-Old Virgin: dumbass can't get laid
Talladega Nights: dumbass is a Nascar driver
Knocked Up: dumbass gets hot girl pregnant
Superbad: dumbasses try to look cool and fail miserably
Walk Hard: dumbass becomes music legend
Drillbit Taylor: dumbass is a bodyguard
Forgetting Sarah Marshall: dumbass gets dumped by hot girl
And I don't know what Step Brothers or Pineapple Express are about, but I can only assume they've something to do with a group of dumbasses.
You see where I'm going with this?

I love when they do that!
Anchorman: Ferrel is funny as hell
40-Year-Old Virgin: Jonah is funny as hell
Talladega Nights: Ferrel is funny as hell
Knocked Up: Rogen is funny as hell
Superbad: Hill is funny as hell
Walk Hard: Riely is funny as hell
Drillbit Taylor: Wilson ISN'T funny as hell
Forgetting Sarah Marshall: Looks funny as hell

I'd rather have 'From the guys that brought you Superbad...' than 'From 2 of the 6 writers of Scary Movie...'.

Uh...
Seth Rogen was a screenwriter for Drillbit, and Judd Apatow was a producer. Judd Apatow was also a producer and screenwriter of Walk Hard.
So basically they worked in the exact same capacity with Drillbit and Walk Hard as they did Superbad, son.

Seth Rogen wrote Drillbit Taylor??? I thought he was supposed to be funny?
And I know that Apatow was the producer for these films its just annoying having his name attached to damn near everything.

I'm in agreement here.
I know it's a gimmick to get people to see the movie, but if the movie is as bad as "Drillbit Taylor" looks, it seems like these guys though a lot more of themselves than they should've.
From the guys that brought you Superbad comes: THE DONNER PAR-TAY! A brand new dark comedy about a group of early Americans that have to resort to cannibalism to survive the winter!
Do you want to be connected to this flick? Did you even know that you were connected to it or is someone involed in your blockbusting movie taking liberties at your expense?

From what I read, the script was based on a lengthy treatment written by none other John Hughes. Twenty years ago, this would've meant something, but considering his projects this decade have included JUST VISITING and MAID IN MANHATTAN, methinks this story got tainted by the stench of familiarity and desperation to keep ahold of work.

Yeah but Jim Uhls who wrote Fight Club was also given a credit for Jumper.
Just goes to show One Good Screenwriter needs to equal only screenwriter or having his name attached goes out the door. Helps marketing, though. Which brings us back to your point...

They should start off every movie preview with a guy grabbing his crotch and screaming "I got a fucking movie for you right here!" Then he zips his fly down and the trailer comes zooming and flipping out of his pants. Then it says nothing else. That way, people will bitch about this asshole holding his dick presenting new trailers instead of people who actually did something I found interesting.

Well, it was a matter of time before the Apatow backlash began. And here it is.
It's simple marketing. Superbad and Knocked Up made tons of money last year, right? The same guys who did those films worked on Drillbit Taylor, right? Naturally, Paramount wants Drillbit to make some decent money, and Apatow and Rogen are hot right now, so they're taking advantage of that. They're basically saying "If you liked these films, you might like this one. The same guys worked on it." Sometimes the actor isn't the biggest draw for a movie.
Tons of movies are guilty of referencing past work to get promotion across. I'm looking at a Hot Fuzz poster, and there's a tagline that says "A new comedy from the guys that created Shaun of the Dead." The poster for 10,000 BC says "From the director of Idependence Day and The Day After Tomorrow." And, of course, Pixar references their films in several of their ads. Disney, too.
If an actor/director/producer has noteworthy credentials that would help bring in a movie's target audience, you bet your ass studios are going to take advantage of it.
Marketing: It happens.
echo_bravo
03-28-2008, 05:31 PM
Yeah, but with Hot Fuzz at least THE SAME fuckin people were behind the film.
Its very misleading when only a co-writer of Superbad is behind Drillbit Taylor. They make it seem like it was directed by the same guy...which it wasnt.

In addition to Seth Rogan being a co-writer, you know Judd Apatow was a producer, right?
Superbad did the same thing. Judd Apatow didn't direct, but the ads said "From the guy who brought you The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up." Again, he only had a producer credit, but his films were part of the marketing.
So, it's not all that misleading when they say its from the guys who did Superbad and Knocked Up, because they were a part in the process of making Drillbit.

Exactly. No where in those marketing campaigns do they say "from the director of," they say "creators," so basically as long as the most of the people who worked on one movie are working on the other, even if they are in different job positions, they still aren't miss marketing it at all. What you assume when you hear "creators" is not what everyone else assumes.

I am just sayin its very misleading to the audience and its pretty annoying to me.
They are doing this with Forgetting Sarah Marshall as well. "From the guys that brought you Knocked Up..."
Apatow maybe the producer of this yet again but its directed by Nicholas Stoller (screenwriter of Fun With Dick and Jane) and written by Jason Segal.
Oh well.

Yeah, I'm sick of the following
- From the guys who brought you...
- From the producers of....
- From the writers of....
Here's a radical suggestion, why not rely on the films own individual merit and advertising? I may get lynched here I don't know but I don't particularly rate Apatow or many of the films he was involved with. 40 Year Old Virgin and Anchorman were the best of the bunch imo but I thought Superbad was the most overated film last year. Maybe the humour doesn't transfer well over here but I'm not that impressed and when a producer relies on the successes of his previous projects to advertise every movie he ever so much as touched the script once
Next up the posters will read....
- From two of the guys that used to hang about with Judd Apatow and were on the set of Talldega Nights once and have decided to do a film that Judd Apatow said might be funny only this time it is guaranteed to be funny because they added more cock and fart jokes

Yeah, but I feel that the tags do give the movie some credibility, and if you actually know what these guys do, a pretty good idea of what to expect. Anchorman and Walk Hard are pretty different from Knocked Up and The 40 Year Old Virgin. I'm thinking Superbad and Pineapple Express will be more alike than other Apatow movies, because Rogan seems to like the action/little guys triumph story lines. He was also one of the guys who brought Drillbit Taylor.
Another thing is that if these movies didn't specify that they were by the same guys, a lot of people would think they were rip offs or half hearted versions.
I'm just sick of movie ads all looking like some studio editor just dropped new movie clips into one of three or four timelines they had saved into their editing suite.

it doesn't bother me, im sold on the movie trailers mostly every time (with the exception being Drillbit Taylor. Sorry owen, but after the complete suckfest that is You me and Dupree, i'm not going anywhere with you as a comedic lead), and when i see them, they're pretty damn good comedies.
So, the whole "people who broguht you Superbad" is fine by me. It makes me more comfortable to the fact that the movie will most liekly be hilarious!

Word. We're talking about Hollywood here, they just wanna make money.
It's the same with "Quentin Tarantino Presents" or any number of shit they come up with to sell stuff. It's not worth getting mad about, advertising is EVERYWHERE and it's not gonna go away. Just be smart and realize what "From the guys who brought you Superbad" actually means.

from the guy who knew a guy who used to clean the toilets in the paramount studio backlot , comes ( insert movie here )
Yeah , i actively avoid anything with rogen and apatow's name attached now , they became old news after Superbad ( wonder if that was supposed to be a descriptive term for the film itself , and wasn't that movie just American Pie all over again anyway , people have such short memories ) .
Please to the marketers , who the fekk cares if apatow knew the guy's great uncle who wrote it , i don't care , it's not going to make the film any better , , this guy is def , yes , overrated ( ie - i don't think he's as clever or witty , or a great writer director , at least not the way some people go on about him , him and rogen are glorified hacks , yep i said it , they rape things that have been done before , and they fail miserably at it , from a personal entertainment perspective . )

Anchorman in my eyes was hysterical and a personal classic,as was 40 Year Old Virgin, but that's where the love ends.Talledega Nights did nothing but irritate me,Walk Hard seemed to be the same film with a country music twist, and Super-Bad was REALLY REALLY HORRIBLE!!!I like both Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, but the film itself just wasn't even close to being funny, and the 'hip-talk' bugged the bugs out of me!

Either you've never seen American Pie or you've never seen Superbad, because their only similarity lies in the fact they fall within the same basic genre of teenagers trying to get laid. Other than that, completely different films.
This is like saying Bad Boys is Lethal Weapon all over again simply because they're two movies about cops trying to settle their differences while desperately taking down the bad guys.
