i was friends with this girl once (and we are not friends anyone) and one time i was talking about my favorite actors and actresses. marisa tomei, sarah michelle gellar, gary oldman..................and my all time favorite, philip seymour hoffman and her reaction "but he's ugly". i explained to her that he was my favorite actor because of his talent. NOT HIS LOOKS. i had to explain to her that he is amazing to watch in any movie he is in. i don't like him for his looks. for his acting ability.
it just really annoyed me that those were the first words out of her mouth when i mentioned his name.
why are looks so important to some people???
so, yeah, i have those actors that just make me melt because they are good looking....i am sure most people do. but they aren't my favorite actors. some of them are talented, but i don't chose my favorite actors because of their looks. its their ability to act!

What a lovely reason to dislike an actor. She should be a studio exec - she's got the mind for it.

A stupid thing I heard once was how all black and white movies are inferior because.......they're in black and white. Any movie with color (any...think about that) is better.

THAT is definitely one of the more ignorant things ive ever heard - and ive heard it plenty.

Wheres the logic behind this? Are black and white photos inferior because ttheyre not in color?

How different is this girl saying that from a dude who's first comment on a hot actress most of the time is him saying, "shes hot"

Besides, I didnt read the poster saying his friend DIDNT like PSH, just that she thinks he's ugly

"but he's ugly"

MoovEDude, the "but" in that statement indicates that she doesn't care for Hoffman... That's what I got from it.

Yeah, it seems kind of unfair that most Hollywood producers and some film-goers aim for looks as much as they do for talent, I read that actor Edward G. Robinson said that if he were better looking he would have got more and a wider range of roles. Still, its great that actors like him and Hoffman managed to succeed in the business because of their extraordinary talents rather than their physical appearance.

The sad part is, this is true for ALL of acting; not just in Hollywood. Looking the part (at least in the director's mind) usually trumps how well one could potentially play said part. I've been shot down for roles simply because the director thought I was too short or too young-looking even though I gave great auditions.

Of course, with voiceover acting, looks are at least not part of the equation.

If actors were judged only by their looks and not their acting talent, then Steve Buscemi would be homeless. Thank God the boy can act!

Have you ever heard of "style?"

Have you ever heard of "style?"

Actually, I think the reason that so many old movies were made in black and white was because everyone used to be color blind back then. But then evolution kicked in somewhere along the lines.

Appearances are important in a visual medium. Steve Buschemi might not be Brad Pitt, but his appearance is part of his charm, just like Pitt's, even if the two are charming in different ways. So I think it's good for actors to look striking or unique, whether in their bodies, faces, costumes, manners - whatever. A pretty face is just what most notice first and foremost because they don't really absorb films enough to get accustomed to the subtle stuff.

Oh.

So the first 50 years of cinema were black and white because of a concensual stylistic choice? I knew my cinema history teachers were hiding something from me!

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that the fact that color much better imitates reality isn't a valid reason for it being superior to black and white. Most film-noirs would be impossible in color, just as many color movies would lose their beauty in black and white.

Yeah, I know that. It's just the frustrating part of being an actor...knowing that many times, whether or not you get a part is completely out of your hands -- no matter how good an audition you gave or how good you'd been in previous works.

That's true. Sometimes you might be too tall, too small, too skinny, too fat, too black, too white, too young, too old, too scarred, too babyfaced, too contemporary, too old-fashioned... "discrimination" in film roles is a lot more vast than just beautiful or ugly. I'm just not sure why the topic got so generalized.

Fine and dandy... But it is really foolish to object to someone liking an actor because "they're ugly"! And that's so subjective.

Eh... I got laughed at the other day because the end result of a conversation was me thinking Steve Carell was more attractive than Brad Pitt. So... Subjective.

Shit like this is the reason why I refuse to talk about movies to anyone at school anymore. It is IMPOSSIBLE to have an intelligent conversation about movies with teenagers. Everything is either the best movie ever (300), or the gayest movie ever (everything thats not 300).

Hoffman's one of the all-time greats, without doubt. For me, he was snubbed at the Oscars; his performance in Charlie Wilson's War was hilarious, much more interesting than Bardem's slightly hammy -- albeit still good -- performance.

Well, the majority of the population bases who they like mostly on their looks. This is the reason most women like Zac Efron, Matthew McCoughney (sp), Will Smith, Matt Damon, etc etc. And why most guys like Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Jessica Simpson, Halle Berry, etc etc. Regardless of their talent, people will flock to them to see them with as least clothes on as possible.

Reason why a movie starring two very talented, but not the best looking in the conventional way, actors/actresses usually doesn't do too well (i.e The Savages) while a movie starring two very marginally talented, but very good-looking, actors does great (i.e. Fool's Gold).

It's the way of the world.

Will Smith and Matt Damon actually have "mad skills" though. Same with Halle Berry and Jessica Biel (I expect better things from her in the future.) But yeah, I agree BanksIsDaFuture.

Well, thank god that studio execs are mostly heterosexual men who don't give a rat's ass if PSH is ugly as long as he can act his guts out and thus don't fret to put him in a SHITload of movies. Then again, the status of ugly actresses is practically nonexistent...

But I'd rather have PSH than ugly actresses. Let's just say that if all the studio execs were shallow women like the OP's friend, we movie fans would be in big trouble... :P

The actor you mentioned may be very good, but I think he's one on the most "unwatchable" person I ever seen.
He makes me want to change channel when I see him on tv.
Just like Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell and Owen Wilson.
I just can't watch a movie starring them in a role bigger than a tiny tiny cameo.
Another one is Jack Black, I only liked him in The Jackal because he got killed.

I have a friend who has little interest watching movies or shows where she doesn't find someone hot, so I feel your pain. If I recommend us watching a movie together, and thinks the lead character is ugly, she doesn't want to see it. On the other hand, she'll love movies that has her favorite people in there.
