View Full Version : Will Ferrell is an overrated, unfunny tool

Will Ferrell has been in a lot of funny movies. Anchorman. And that was about it. And that was because of all the other performances around him. He was ironically the worst part about the whole movie.

I don't think Will Ferrell himself has ever made me laugh, and I'm not exaggerating. Yelling whatever random thought comes to your head doesn't make for very funny improvisation.

His cameos don't help the movies he's in either. I thought Will Ferrell was the worst part in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and that movie was pretty damn bad.

Dang, really?

Haha, gawd I love that movie. There's a discussion going on on about him HERE (http://joblo.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2704723#post2704723) in the General talk forum. I personally love Will Ferrell.

Although, Semi-Pro was one of the WORST movies I have seen in a very long time. I think I laughed once, which is complete bullshit since Ferrell is usually hilarious. So he hasn't made you laugh even once? What about Old School?

I used to be a Kevin Smith fan then woke up and realized what a pompous douchebag he was and the fact he hasn't made a decent movie since the first Clerks. So obviously I didn't care too much for the Jay and Silent Bob movie.

Old School sucked. I think I probably chuckled once and that was because of the band playing near the beginning of the movie.

I find most of the SNL cast to be vastly overrated anyways, and that includes Mike Myers and especially Chris Farley.

Can't stand Ferrell.... He's pretty terrible, and just about all of his movies are as well. I really only enjoyed him in Jay & Bob Strike Back. The rest of his movies can go to fucking hell for all I care.

Ferrell is always the least funny part of everything he takes part of. The entire supporting cast of Anchorman out-acted and out-funnied him, and even Talladega Nights which was obviously inferiour still had the hilarious John C. Reilly steal the show and actually make the movie somewhat worth a viewing. The only role I actually tolerated Ferrell in was in Stranger Than Fiction, and that's only because he WASN'T funny in it to begin with!

Glad others agree with me. My friends and I always say that Ferrell only made it as a comedian because he is constantly willing to make a fool and an ass out of himself, which apparently makes many people laugh.

Will Ferrell was about as funny as everyone else in Anchorman, meaning he was really goddamn funny. And he was maybe the best part of Old School. Pretty much everything else he's done has been pretty annoyingly unfunny. Still, I suppose I'd disagree with this rant. That said, he needs to switch it up or get out, his act got old a long time ago.

Every once in a while a Will Ferrel SNL spoof might make me chuckle a wee bit (the "cowbell" skit comes to mind) but the guy is nowhere near being a comedic genius and totally undeserving of the praise he's gotten throughout his career. He reminds me of the guy in high school who was always yelling and making an ass of himself in order to gain attention and laughs, only not as funny.

To me the best parts about Anchorman were Steve Carell, the cameos, and all the sight gags which were funny on their own without needing Will Ferrel in the scene.

Old School did suck... Talk about overrated. And I didn't have a problem with the cast! It just sucked.:(

I do generally like Will Ferrell but I can't see myself watching Semi-Pro anytime soon... I still love Anchorman and Talladega Nights. But they had great performances all around.

Stranger than Fiction was quite good. Quite.

Yep, I used to be a Will Ferrell fan but he is just a one-trick pony now. I refuse to see any of his films now.

Like its been said before, he has had help from his surrounding cast members that all outshine him. He was completely outshined in Old School by Vince Vaughn and he was completely outshined in Anchorman by Carrell and especially Paul Rudd.

Dont even get me started his role as Ricky Bobby. That was John C Reilly's film IMO.

For the most part, I agree with FatSakHead. I've enjoyed him a lot in "Anchorman", "Talladega Nights" and "Jay and Silent Bob" (and of course "Stranger than Fiction" but that masterpiece is different), will probably love "Step Brothers" too. He seems to be great if directed well.

Too bad most of the time he's the sorriest excuse for comedy ("Old School", his cameo in "Wedding Crashers"). The man has been too fucking overexposed in the last years.

Though I think the same thing about the entire 'team' of tools that always act in the same movies in the same ways with the same jokes that are still shit (Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn).

I'm starting to think I'm the only Kevin Smith fan who didn't like the first Clerks. :eek:No, we're at least two. I hated the original "Clerks". Morons being morons for two hours.

But I loved "Chasing Amy", adored "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" and absolutely praise "Dogma" as the second coming.

I can't stand Kevin Smith though, the man needs to grow the fuck up.

Will Ferrell like most generic SNL cast members can be funny with good direction and a funny script, but by himself he's a lousy overly-praised comedian. Even when directed well, he still seems to be outshined by the entire supporting cast.

I find him funny sometimes. Kicking and Screaming was pretty funny.
Will pulls in a ton of money at the box office whether he's funny or not. I'm not sure how he got so lucky. He's done quite a few terrible movies like Anchorman, for example. I think he just needs to find the right funny role.

He can be funny, but he can also be incredibly annoying at the same time. I prefer to take Will Ferrell in small doses. I loved his cameo in WEDDING CRASHERS ("Ma! The meatloaf! FUCK!"), mostly because it comes at the precise time the movie starts to get boring.

He was funny in OLD SCHOOL too, but that was a supporting part.

I pretty much dig anything Ferrell makes. I can see why some might not like him, but the guy cracks me up. On top of his movies, his video clip with his 2 or 3 year old landlord Pearl, and Celebrity Jeopardy are always good for a huge laugh.

As for his films (at least the ones he has pretty large roles in; haven't seen Bewitched and don't plan to):

A Night at the Roxbury- 7/10
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back- 10/10
Old School- 9/10
Elf- 8/10
Anchorman- 9/10
Kicking & Screaming- 6/10
Talladega Nights- 7.5/10
Stranger Than Fiction- 8/10
Blades of Glory- 7.5/10
Semi-Pro- 8/10

And as for Semi-Pro, I thought it was fucking hilarious, but maybe it was just the atmosphere on opening night.

Will Ferrel is pretty consistantly hilarious to me, at least until recently where he's starting to repeat the same shtickt over and over. Stranger than Fiction was great, but I think he was the only thing holding it back.

1.Talladega Nights- 8/10
2.Old School- 8/10
3.Elf- 7/10
4.Anchorman- 7/10
5.Kicking and Screaming- 7/10
6.Zoolander- 7/10
7.Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back- 7/10
8.Blades of Glory- 6/10
9.Semi Pro- 6/10
10.A Night at the Roxbury- 5/10

I think the fact that Semi Pro bombed will lead him to a progressive direction as opposed to the same "sports" or "themed idiot" gimmick.

Not a huge fan of Will, but I thought he was definitely one of the top SNL cast members. The skit where he's in a board meeting wearing a red, white and blue thong and tanktop is one of my favorites. His movies haven't impressed me that much, but I find them enjoyable from time to time.

Will Ferrell is one of a few comedians who I can count on to consistenly make me laugh. His comedy isn't about jokes or wit; when I want that, I listen to a Demetri Martin or Mitch Hedberg CD. Will Ferrell's comedy is about not being afraid to make a total ass of oneself. The man seems to have no ego, no fear of being an idiot. He's an awesome performer. Part of what makes his comedy work is that he plays characters who take themselves seriously. He can make me consistently laugh without saying a single joke. It is simply the way he portrays people that is funny.

Which in his case is funny for all of five seconds before you wish you were watching a Pauly Shore movie instead.

For me, depending on the plot, it's either gonna be hilarious or suck serious ass.
The funniest movie I've ever seen him in: Anchorman.
The worst movie, to date: Bewitched.
I liked Talladega Nights, but Stranger Than Fiction while entertaining just seemed forced and didn't work with him in the role.
The cameos in The Producers and his role in Zoolander were funny but I just watched Blades of Glory for the first time a few nights ago and I'm really glad I didn't pay to see it.
And I won't watch Kicking and Screaming because I like the guy as a person and I don't want to stop liking him. (Just didn't look that funny.)
I think he has the "comedy thing" but it can be really hit or miss for him.

Really? I thought the focus on Harrelson's character was mainly what lagged Semi-Pro down. He seemed just like an extra name to tack onto the picture, and felt like dead weight in a role anyone really coul have done. Andre Benjamen impressed me though. Woody just made me regret his return to comedy...

I almost completely agree with this. I only disagree with the score for Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, which I would give around a 7/10. Ferrell was my favorite character in that movie as well. Favorite quote from the movie, taken from the IMDB:

Whillenholly (Ferrell): Why are you shooting at me? I'm just a Federal Wildlife Marshall.
Chrissy: Two reasons. One: we're walking, talking, bad girl cliches.
Missy: And two: because you're a man.
Whillenholly (Ferrell): Only on the outside.

The way he delivers that last line is classic.

Ferrell was my favorite on SNL too, been a huge fan since the first skit I saw him in probably like 8-9 years ago and I'm still not tired of him, I just can't get enough. Best SNL Skit ever (probably not but its awesome) -----> http://www.jumpcut.com/view/?id=90C87DD4783511DCB237000423CF381C

Will Farell was one of my least favorite on SNL, so I'm surprised he has become this huge comedy machine since he left the cast. I would've guessed he'd have faded away, but it became more of a rebirth for him. I love Zoolander, Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Stranger than Fiction, and Old School, so I'm always game for his next project. He's so much more funny to me today than he was 10 years ago. Maybe he sold his soul to the Devil?

I'm starting to think I'm the only Kevin Smith fan who didn't like the first Clerks.

I hadn't seen it in years. Then I wanted to watch it back when Clerks II came out... Jesus. That shit was damn near unwatchable. It's only, what, 12 years old? And it's aged terribly. Nothing but random strangers coming in the store who just happen to have something to add to every stupid conversation. Not to mention some of the worst acting this side of a high school play.

I think Will Ferrel is okay. I don't really have anything against him, but I'm not really a fan either. I liked Anchorman and Semi-Pro a lot. Blades of Glory and Talladega Nights were decent. Nothing special.

His alpha-male shtick is getting old. But can he really do anything else?

TheHutch23
04-01-2008, 02:22 AM
I look forward to what he does in the future, as I seem to be the only one who remembers him saying around the time of Anchorman that he was following up with two more blue collar movies. Those wound up being Talladega Nights and Semi-Pro, problem being that the latter was too similar to the former.

Not that I think all should expect diversity, since he's definetly a personality actor like Kevin "La Douche" Costner, as opposed to a character actor like Sacha "The Red" Baron Cohen.

I was going to start my rant about this ass-clown, but then came across this thread.

This dude is painfully unfunny. He has a reverse-Midas effect: everything he touches turns to crap. Even the laugh-a-minute Wedding Crashers slowed to a halt during his brief cameo. The guy has absolutely no comedy or improv skills that I can perceive. How he's become so wildly popular is really befuddling to me.

Ferrell is the man. Not only do I enjoy the majority of his movies (though he has had some stinkers) but some of his sketches/clips/skits are just fucking hilarious. The one he did a little while ago where he was reading the comments about him on the internet was priceless and his timing was perfect. He's also been producing some pretty great shit (Eastbound & Down, which he also has some hilarious cameos in) and was also hysterical in his George Bush Broadway show. I would like to see him shake it up a bit though and do some more Stranger Than Fiction type stuff. That movie was gold.

I loved when he was on SNL. His James Lipton impersonation was so on the money and utterly hilarious.

He also does the best George W. Bush IMO.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Wedding Crashers are two of the funniest movies of all time. Not to mention the fact that I loved Dick, Elf and really liked Stranger Than Fiction in which he gave a great performance, Bewitched (incredibly underrated, Nicole Kidman is adoreable in that flick), Starsky and Hutch, Anchorman, Old School, Talladega Nights, Kicking and Screaming and Blades of Glory.

He's also great in the otherwise so-so comedies The Producers remake and Step Brothers.

So yeah, while the man has made his fair share of duds (Night at the Roxburry, Land of the Lost, his cameo in The Goods, Superstar, The Ladies Man, Boat Trip and I wasn't a big fan of the overrated Zoolander), I'm a HUGE fan.

Will Ferrell to me is at his best in a supporting role like in Zoolander, Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, or Old School. Anchorman is still a funny film and Elf is good, but the rest of his comedies (I'm not counting Stranger Than Fiction here) where he is the lead have all been horrible to me.

Aside from "Stranger Than Fiction," I really can't stand anything else in which he's appeared...which basically amount to overly broad mainstream 'comedies' that try to bludgeon you to death with its 'humor.' "Old School" makes "Animal House" look like a Truffaut film.
