Can someone tell me the difference between I Am Legend's theatrical version and the alternate ending version please! I don't want to buy the 2-disc and my stupid video store only has the one disc version.

The only difference is the ending.

What the fuck is so controversial about the alt. ending? If anything the theatrical was better and more controversial (ie. Will Smith dying).
I thought this movie would be a blockbuster but it was pretty lackluster. Worst CGI I've seen in a while.

Thanks for the spoiler.
Well, considering that it is a thread clearly stating that it deals with the ENDING of I Am Legend, if I were someone who hadn't seen the film I would pretty much stay away...

Yeah, I don't get what's so controversial about the alternate ending either, although I much preferred it over the theatrical one.

There's bad and worse. 'Nuff said. The threequel's called 'I Am Abominable'.
And the spoiler complaint? Wow, just f'ing WOW. I hope substances were involved.

The only real difference is that one ending is bullshit, and the other ending is COMPLETE bullshit.

Well, of curse that’s absolutely no help . . . thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

*sigh* OK fine, in one ending the character of Robert Neville makes the ultimate sacrifice and becomes a martyr and in the other there's a semi-peaceful resolution and all is well. But as stated above, they're both bullshit.

So in the alternate ending when Will asked them to “Let me save you” they actually do?
Does the disk have both endings? If so I will watch it my self in a few days.

Not quite, in the alternate version Will's character has a face to face with the leader of the mutants from behind the glass of his basement lab. Will realizes that what the leader wants is the return of Will's kidnapped patient which he's been experimenting on etc. The leader and the kidnapped patient are lovers I believe and so Will agrees, opens the glass and walks through the mutant mob cradling the patient and hands her over to the leader...then they all leave. In the theatrical version Will pulls a hidden grenade from a drawer and blows himself up with the mutants in order that is friends can escape.

The visual realization of the mutants always seems to be the weakest aspect in the movie versions of this story. Here they were like a bunch of larger, stupider, more violent Gollums. Nonetheless, it's almost as good as "The Omega Man."

Good point . . . why do you think this is?

No idea -- because the way they were described in the story defies any sort of creation someone could come up with?

Umm, the ending isn't the only difference. Rewatch them both carefully, there is some other added footage I'm pretty sure. Like more stuff with Robert, Anna, and Ian. One example is the scene where they are fishing in a fountain, that wasn't in the original.
