So I've been a huge fan of Romero,Savini, and their Dead series for some time now,but what makes them so popular? Is it the What~If? factor, the superb gore, the zombis themselves, or the story? I'd say it is a mucho el~grande combo of all of the above personally, any opinions?

i think that a large part of the success of this series is the oft-mentioned timely social commentary that plays a key, if sometimes subtle, role in each film. in short order:
- night: racism
- dawn: consumerism
- day: cold war
- land: classism
- dairy: haven't seen it yet

Well, they basically invented the zombie as we know it today. As the above poster mentioned, they're each one of the few horror movies that implements strong social commentary. And, even though I wasn't fond of Day and Land (haven't seen Diary), they all seamlessly blend terror with action (Night to the least extent though). Not only one of the greatest horror movies of all time, Dawn of the Dead is one of the greatest action movies too.

Agreed. Sometimes it seems as if the zombies are just a backdrop. I bet Night, Dawn, and Day could have had natural disasters, nuclear war, societal chaos, etc instead of zombies and the movies wouldn't change very much.

Oh hey! I remember this thread, it was like my third ever! I had not even realized that anyone had ever responded to this until now.

Definitely the social commentary aspect...and of course, the utter badassness that is ZOMBIES.
Oh, and Savini's brilliant work!
