Ok...ok...recently after giving Master and Commander a re-watch 5 years after it came out, I decided I wanted to add it to my collection. My Dad owns the dvd from when it first came out, but he doesn't enjoy the film all that much. I didn't want to purchase his copy off of him because he has it in full screen.
So I decided to be patient and wait for it to go on sale. I was surprised to find it in the Wal Mart dump bins for $5, but I didn't purchase it there either because all they had were full screen.
So, Circuit City had it on sale this week for $4.99, so I ran down this morning because Kill Bill and Breach were also $4.99. I made sure the dvd case said Widescreen, which it did with a ratio of 2.40:1, but the slip case said it had a ratio of 1.85:1, which was weird, but I bought it because both are widescreen formats anyway. So....when I get home and open the dvd, I could have shit my britches when the dvd itself said Full Screen, life's a bitch sometimes. Has anybody else been slighted like this?

Edit: The slip cover that says Award Series: Winner of the Academy Award in CINEMATOGRAPHY mocks me as a write this rant.

I've never been hosed like that, but I have bought a few DVDs without noticing that they were fullscreen; I go back to the store and exchange it for the widescreen.

I freakin' hate fullscreen.

Go back to the store and get it replaced for a widescreen one. problem solved. If you're unsure you'll get the same fullscreen again make sure they check that shit on the spot.

I ordered CHICAGO on halfprice.com or whatever it is (a subsidiary of eBay).

I took a LOT of time making sure that the box posted on this one account was for the widescreen DVD. It was. So I emailed and said, 'I would like to buy this as long as IT IS IN WIDESCREEN.'

He sent it to me, and it was pan and scan. I was fucking pissed. I should have given him a negative score.

Hasn't happened to me, and if it does, I'll take it back... fuck their return policy, it's going back... period.

Oddly enough, Stir Of Echoes is labeled "Full Frame", yet the movie IS in Widescreen... or at least my copy is.

We don't really have this problem in the UK. The majority of DVDs come out in widescreen format only. I think. Or perhaps there are fullscreen editions on the shelves but i'm artistically evolved the the point where they become invisible. Never understood the point in fullscreen versions of movies. Even when I didn't own a widescreen TV set I refused to watch anything other than widescreen.

A DVD that doesn't have widescreen for some reason is Frankenstein (the Deniro version) as far as I know. I've never seen one.

The only way ill buy something in full-screen is if thats the way the director intended for it to be shown.

Otherwise i just say no. Ive actualy given movies away that ive recieved in full screen. It just bugs the shit out fo me now. I keep wanting to edge over in my seat to see the little bits of the screen that are chopped off.:D

I don't care for full screen either....

Stupid question:

What's the difference between widescreen and pan & scan versions?

someguy

Pan and scan is basically another term for fullscreen

Wikipedia has a gif that shows how much is cut out from pan and scan (linked it cause of size)

Wow, thanks for that.... FUCK full-screen! That's crazy how much shit is actually cut out in an FS version!

I prefer Widescreen, and buy it if its available... but if its just too great a deal to pass up on a full screen movie, I will buy it as such.

Ah Sony. Well Sony used to provide Widescreen on one side of the DVD and Full Frame on the other. Then years later, some genius decided to repackage a lot of their films and drop the Widescreen side. Genius I tell you... I know people hunt mass merchants in hopes of finding the original DVD release.

Also to chime in...STAY AWAY from TIGERDIRECT! They screwed me over on a Terminator SPECIAL EDITION..I emailed AND seen the pic on their site that said SPECIAL EDITION..They repiled back, said it was...comes in the mail and guess what? I overpaid for the shitty Terminator original transfer w/no extras. I bash Tiger Direct every chance I get now. Bought T.SE from a private seller on Amazon and got it NEW for $8!

Anyone seen the extra features on the DVD of The Interpreter?
Sydney Pollack goes on a tirade about pan and scan for like ten minutes. Seriously... there's an entire "bonus feature" devoted to him bitching about the fact that any movies are formatted full screen.
I thought he was going to strangle a kitten.
