I'm tired of hearing this shit.
300 Fan: 300 is the best movie ever.
Me: 300 sucked
300 Fan: Well that's your opinion.
Me: HOLY SHIT!! REALLY?! I THOUGHT IT WAS YOURS THE WHOLE TIME!!
If I express like or dislike for something, it should be noted its my opinion just by virtue of the fact I said it. It's because of stupid shit like this where I have to start almost every argument I make with "IMO" just to protect myself from being reminded by people that what I say are my own thoughts.

Yeah, I ranted about this before. It happens all the time in, you know, the real world.
When I say something about a movie, you're free to fucking ASSUME I'm saying "In my opinion" at the end of the darned sentence.

Sometimes it just makes the person seem a bit more polite to say "in my opinion" if they're trashing a film.

In my opinion, anyone who likes this movie is a shitfucking eunuch pederast cockgobbler with the taste of a cancerous brain tumor eating away at Richard Kelly.

I only bring up the "opinion" argument when people show up trying to say something is good or bad as fact. THAT is what annoys me above most other things.

I don't like when people make an opinion and play it off like them stating it as fact makes your differing opinion seem "incorrect".
Such as: "Uwe Boll has recreated popularity of the low-budget sci-fi movie genre. You can hate him all you want, but you CANNOT deny that he has made some of the most controversial and moving pictures since CITIZEN KANE. Read it again: he has made some of the most CONTROVERSIAL and MOVING pictures since Citizen Kane. No matter what you think of him, you have to give him respect for that."
I haven't read that post yet, but you get what I'm saying.
I hate that.

I've read many times threads where someone goes "Oh, I just love how everyone says their opinions as if they were facts." but when I read the posts before, they all seem regular "This movie blew." and "It kicked ass."
Is that what you mean "they state it as a fact"?

An example: If you don't like Insert Random Movie then you don't like movies.
I don't get how that's simply stating an opinion.

I think some ppl post it casue they want ppl to be sure it is infact their opinion and not jsut something they read like a review or something else along those lines.
I mean anything you stat should infact be your opinion but there are lots of sheep out there who would say/do/go along with alomst anything to be accepted.

Yeah. "It's mandatory to love Kubrick if you're a movie fan." is annoying.
In fact! If you like Kubrick, you're an idiot! Mm-hmm!

In fact! If you like Kubrick, you're an idiot! Mm-hmm!
Thems be fightin' words! Argh!
But I agree. If you're saying it, it's obviously an opinion. But then X is right about others who state their opinions as facts which is equally annoying. Can't people just agree to disagree and move on? Everyone is so sensitive, it's not like we helped make the movie.
What bothers me is what you pointed out before, when people just say, "It sucked." Wow, that's so fucking informative. Thank you for letting me know WHY it sucked. Good job buddy! :)
I always try to state why I dislike a movie, but I supposes in this day and age, writing more than a sentence just doesn't fly anywhere.

I knew a girl once a few years ago, and in one of our conversations I happened to mention that I liked the movie Pulp Fiction a lot. I really do...I like it but I can accept that there are people out there that don't. That's ok, that's life.
She rented it, and watched it with a girlfriend and then we talked and she started this huge argument about it. She had to yell about how awful it was, that it wasn't THAT great, and how her and her gf thought it was fucking stupid, etc...etc..."how could you LIKE THAT STUPID THING???!!?"
I tried to get a word in, saying something like "oh, I thought you might like it. Sorry to hear you didn't"...but she wouldn't give me the chance. She then started blasting me for 'picking that for her' and that she would never trust my choices again.
God I hate her....even thinking about that idiot....

There's a "discussion" going on about the Bourne sequels in the General Movie Forum - the thread is about camerawork ruining good movies (or something). It just seems that people are telling us that the movies, and Paul Greengrass, are bad because of the shaky camerawork. A few posters are saying that people are stupid for buying tickets for the movie and buying the DVDs, as if to say "they enjoy it, so they're stupid." It's mindboggling to me.

I think "Well that's your opinion." is a perfectly reasonable response if someone seems worked up seems overzealous about a movie you've already said you didn't like, and no matter how many times you've reiterated it, showing no signs of wanting to discuss the topic, they continue on trying to convince you that it's a great movie. While it's blatantly obvious that stating you like something is an opinion, there are some people who beat their opinion into the ground without adding any new insights into their thinking, or anything to the discussion other than restating their opinion.
It might end like, "How can you not like that! I just don't get it! That movie is amazing."
"Well, that's just your opinion."
I've seldom seen instances where it went down down dissimilar to that. That never happens with me though, because I like talking about movies and I generally try to leave things open ended. Someone questions who you can't/can possibly like a movie - what the hell are you supposed to say to that if you just don't feel like justifying something. Most people in the "real world" (as used earlier) are like that - maybe with movies, but there's probably something else they would go ape shit talking about, be it sports or astronomy.
Sometimes people need to be grounded back to reality, be it telling them they just took a very potent drug, or reminding them that all they are accomplishing in their efforts is telling you they liked a movie.

I can see why one would enjoy the movies story-wise. I don't think the fans are stupid at all. I just don't like that Greengrass fellow. :)

I get that vibe, but the opposite way you do.
People are posting on that thread as if you have a serious problem if you've gotten dizzy from that movie, because THEY loved it and found it NOT too blurry to watch.
I stopped going to that thread, because I'm sick of reading how some are vehemently opposed to anothers' opinion, therefore subversively belittling those that disagree with their views.
I got better things to do than throw eggs at a brick wall.

Whenever I make an announcement and suspect others will disagree to a degree worth noting, I always include the first person to avoid any confusion.
I don't go out and say "Old School" sucked, because I know a lot of people liked that movie. I don't do it to avoid "that's your opinion," I do it because I'm acknowledging IT IS MY OPINION.
I am a firm believer in personal opinions, so to counter this rant, let me say I hate people stating opinions as facts. Not about everything, but yeah.
And I am really tired of "Spider-Man 3 sucked." Because the truth is it didn't completely. But nobody wants to let it go.

I am goign to reiterate a point that has been made a few times. If i say it, without quotes or a reference to another person, it is my opinion. My roommate has a remarkably black and white mind, either something is good or it is bad, which directly correlates to him thinking a great deal of what he states if factual and absolute. so I end up saying, "that is your opinion," simply because I need him to understand he isn't totally correct, and that many people would likely disagree with him, and his OPINIONS.
For example I am a huge Stargate fan and he adores Battlestar Galactica. Now with the exception of these shows being based in sci-fi, and generally in outer-space, they are non-comparable. He states this morning "Battlestar Galactica is so much fucking better than Stargate, everyone knows that dude. Honestly that shit is the best show on TV." Not only will he say that kinda shit on a day to day basis but he will stick to it. so i resort to saying "well that is your fucking opinion, twat."
So, as with most things, "in my opinion" is contextual. in the given circumstance I see it as legit, in others shut the fuck up.

I remember hearing a great quote once. It went along the lines of, "Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not everyone is entitled to their own facts." In other words, if there is no logical basis for what you believe, then your opinions are irrational and contradictory to reality. For example, if you think Children of Men is a bad movie for some reason like "it's outdated," you'd be wrong because a.) The backdrop of the film does not resemble the past in any way and b.) The year in which the film takes place has still not come.
Now, if you're like me and you think it's a bad movie because a.) It's really tedious despite its action sequences and b.) The social commentary is unclear and muddled because it never makes a concise statement about what it's trying to warn the present of....then this is entirely subjective because someone else may see something different.
Still, I think it's fine if people use it in the first person. I am of the opinion that Children of Men isn't a good movie is fine. If I say, "I thought Children of Men was so-so," and someone else says "Well that's just your opinion," then I still come across as the smarter and more mature one.

I guess it's the combo of Internet and Youth. Since everything is anonymous, people like to argue the subjectivity of a movie. Movie-watching is so experienced-based that it's not worth the argument. Just Thumbs Up or Down and let's leave it that. No one should get defensive over a movie they loved or hated. There are more troubling issues in the world to use your poison pen on.
