I hate this shit. This is my rule: I don't lend out Steelbooks, Criterions, or OOp/Hard to find DVD's. My friend kept asking to borrow Life Aquatic and I said no. He gets pissed. Theres about 300 other DVD's. Pick something else!

I find it annoying when people get pissy over someone not lending out their DVDs.

When I lend out DVD's I never seem to get all of them back. Months will go by, and you can completely forget about ever seeing that DVD ever again. lol

I hear ya Linds, i went to a friend's house, and he has my Jaws, Seven, and another movie, and i didn't even know they were there. Theres other movies that i haven't seen back either, so i'm just never gonna let anyone borrow them anymore.

I let my friend borrow my brother's Dragonball Z Budokai 2 (my brother said it was cool, and i know its not a movie :)), and you know what he does. He lends to another friend, whose dog bit on it and broke it. His friend never reimbursed him, and he never reimbursed me yet. Every time hes here, i ask for money back, and he gets all defensive and says he has no money and makes me look like the bad guy. Fuck off, you broke what was mine (or my brothers for that matter) and i gave you a year to pay me back without hassling you.

Thats why im never letting anyone borrow shit anymore

I only let one person borrow movies of mine, the only person I would trust being my brother (or my mom if she wanted to). I fucking LOATHE people who don't return property that they've borrowed.... Fuck them for being irresponsible, neglectful fucking assholes.

unless i totally trust them, i just burn a copy and lend it to them, then keep the copy as a lender so the original is tucked safely away

Jeez, this is just plain silly. Don't lend and don't borrow. Then you'll have no problems at all. If you lend, you'll have obvious issues. If you borrow, then likewise. Just don't lend or borrow. I've learnt this the hard way over the years. It aint worth the BULLSHIT, man.

If your mate wants to see the damn movie bad enough, tell him to either go rent it or buy it.

paying for something and borrowing (getting it for free) is a bit different... don't you think?

I have gotten that way recently too, I borrow movies to about 4 people (my sisters, a good friend and my old boss). And recently my sister wanted to borrow my I am Legend steelbook and I told her no and that I don't borrow out steelbooks. She was completly understanding and I gave her my digital copy of the movie instead since she had her laptop with her.

I will burn people a copy of movies if I don't want to borrow out that particular title or if I don't trust them.

Exactly... My sister nicked over £100 worth of box sets and movies when she moved away, I didn't have a choice, parental unit forced me to hand them over... never got them back, I still have the insert from Simpsons box set that she took and she says she never borrowed any... bring the insert out as proof... nothing.

Basically, her friends nicked 'em and I lost out.

It's basically why I imported a Bluray player, region coding is so heavy that if they were to upgrade from DVD to blu over here, they won't be able to borrow my discs

I don't get that, their his movies, he paid for them and hes not a fucking rental store. He is willing to borrow out any number of movies but some are just off limits which is completely understanding. If he really has to see it go fucking rent it from Hollywood Video, I hate that right of entitlement some seem to think comes with friendship. A true friend understands that these are precious to him and doesn't push the issue, my sister understood when I told her I don't borrow out steelbooks, I did let her borrow 3 or 4 other movies though.

If people can't keep on top of the movies that they themselves are loaning out, then really it's their own fault if they never get them back. Obviously the person(s) borrowing should be responsible about getting it back, but even a video store calls about getting their stuff back...

That's not directed at the original poster, but the way some people talk in here it's like they feel that their own property isn't their own responsibility.

But it does remind me, I need to get back my copy of This Film Is Not Yet Rated. Can't be mad about that one, I gave it to my friend but he never asked to borrow it.

If straight-up confrontation isn't your thing, here's a simple solution. Next time your at the friend's house, bring a backpack with you. Steal them back when he's in the bathroom or something.

I think I'm going to completely stop loaning my discs. I'm waiting for two of them to be returned since before Christmas and I just hate to have to call the borrower up and nag her about them. I feel that if I am nice enough to lend them, then the other party should be gracious enough to return them in a timely manner.

Sorry if this makes me sound like a grouch.

I usually only trade DVDs with other movie afficiandos, not big into lending. That way I have collateral on them.

I'm also making a new rule. No trading with females. They either watch it with me, or rent it on their own. Trading and lending to females in the past (or at least the ones I know personally) tend to be the longer periods of time I don't see a movie back. Don't mean to sound like a bigot or anything.

The worst thing is visiting a friends house only to find your 24 - Season 1 box set spread out all across the floor, some discs acting as coasters, wipe matts and plates.

The cardboard sleeve is crushed under some pile of shit and the corners of everything look like theyve been chewed by some rabid dog...

I would NEVER treat anything that didn't belong to me (or anything that did) this way, and if i did I would atleast clean it up abit before the owner came to visit...

I hear horror stories like this on here all the time and it always blows my mind. I can't even imagine having a friend that would ever be that disrespectful because they wouldn't be my friend for very long. I understand extenuating circumstances like your kid got a hold of it but never anything like the horror story you just told. If you borrow a movie to me it comes back in the same condition you lent ot to me on if not better. I have replaced torn or busted amrays for my sister, I will clean disks of excess fingerprints or smudges.

Yeah, you're right of course, and I did go nuts. But some people just don't get it like we do... I did go nuts but my stoned friend and brother just laughed at me claiming 'Its only a film' and that I should calm down...

Needless to say I don't lend things to him anymore, in fact the only time I lend anything is to my housemates, that way I can monitor it alot better.

Yep, put me in the category of never lending out my DVDs ever again. I made a rant awhile back about my friend in Chicago that STILL hasnt returned 4 of my DVDs. This fool comes to visit all the time but whenever I ask him if he brought my DVDs he just says "Nah man, I forgot" Yeah sure you did.

Most of my friends are great about returning shit but I have had it and now I am simply not gonna lend out anymore. If they want to watch a DVD I'll politely tell them to go to fucking Blockbuster or Hollywood Video cause they aint gettin shit from me.

I learned the hard way about lending things out. Last year I lent a friend of mine 3 movies to watch since he was inbetween work and had nothing to do and no money to rent or buy movies. I hadn't had a problem with him before, 3 times prior to this he always brought em back. But with these 3 (And a ps2 game my gf bought me for xmas) I just didn't get em back, one day I signed into MSN and his name was something like "GERMANY IS AWESOME!", so Im like wtf where are my movies? and he says he will give em back when he gets home. Next week I go on MSN and his name is something like "BRITISH COLUMBIA IS BEAUTIFUL!" WTF!? (I live in Nova Scotia btw just so you can see the crazy distances he keeps going) This time though it turns out he MOVED to BC. I emailed him about my stuff and he said he would mail em out, still don't have em, either he flaked out on me or they got lost in the mail, I dunno.

I will never lend another damn thing out to anyone ever again though, no matter what.

I rarely will ever lend anything to anybody and I only do when I know it's somebody that will actually give it back. There are some that I won't let anybody borrow at all though.

Problem solved. I do the same thing. I just make a couple copies to be destroyed by roommates and loaned out, and stick the original in the closet.

You gots to protect yo shit son! I swear to fucking god if my new copy of Zoolander comes up missing motherfuckers will pay dearly.

Yes, that is a compromise. I do it sometimes, but since I don't keep blank dual layer DVD's, I end up making a regular DVD copy with no extras. Kinda makes me feel guilty.:D

I have the same problem with DVDs. I have no idea how many movies i've let people borrow and never saw sight of again. But it's a lot. On a related note. My closest friend used to borrow a lot of comics off of me. Sandman, Hellblazer, Swamp Thing etc. One time I gave her a bundle about ten inches deep because she was ill and pretty much confined to bed. A few days later I drop in to see how she's feeling only to find when I walk into her bedroom that her dog has made a bedmat of my comics which are spread out across the floor. I went fucking balistic. Her reaction? "It's only comics!!!". I never let her borrow another one. Not fucking one I tells ya.

Did you scream "It's only comics!!!" back to her so that it echoed throughout your neighborhood, then city, then...the world?

Sorry, I saw your "Kahn!!!" avatar and couldn't get the image out of my head.

Sorry - but I gotta point out the irony of someone with the username Tyler Durden getting upset about lost/damaged personal possessions. "The things we own end up owning us"

That being said, I just recently lost 3 dvds (Snatch and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels being among them) because I lent them to some guy who, basically split town. The way I see it it's karma though - I got probably 5 to 6 dvds in my collection that I've borrowed from friends and not given back. I know, I know, I'm a bad person.

Generally I try not to be too anal about my dvds though - the whole point of collecting is to have fun. And I love it when my friends really like a movie I lent them, it's like, if it weren't for me half of my friends would never of seen Pulp Fiction - maybe they would of eventually.. but because of me they have seen it. Pretty good feeling if you ask me.

Although, I probably wouldn't lend out Criterion either, Maybe Life Aquatic though cause it's pretty common.
