Thora Birch: Seriously! What Happened?

I have always been a fan of Thora Birch, as she was the 90's kid that we all remembered and adored. Hocus Pocus and Now & Then were some of my favorites. Then in 1999, the big one came. American Beauty is by far one of the best movies of all time. Her performance was riveting, & she became an instant fan favorite.

A few years later she appeared in Ghost World as the social outsider Enid, along with the gorgeous Scarlett Johansson. It seemd like her career was really taking off again... Then for some reason it just kind of stopped. What happened? It's amusing to think Scarlett Johansson has become the more successful one. It may be due to the fact that Thora started off young, and already had her time? If you check out Thora's IMDB page (http://imdb.com/name/nm0000301/), she does has a few upcoming movies, but it seems she's falling into the 'Straight to DVD' category like she's been doing for a while. Scarlett on the other hand, is doing quite well and has become the ultimate sex symbol and a favorite among our fellow Schmoes.

It also seems as though Thora has changed her looks to fit in with this Hollwood trend thats now going on. She had fabulous curves, and now she looks quite pale and a little too skinny (See the first pic?). I read that she wants to pursue directing which could be the whole reason why she's been out of the spotlight... But for whatever reason, I absolutely love Thora Birch and would love to see a great comeback.

She kinda makes me sick to my stomach. Always has, too. Which is why she was good for American Beauty. I think part of the appeal to that role was that she WASN'T gorgeous. She was just a typical teenager.

I hope she doesn't resurface, though, because it's almost as painful watching her onscreen as it is Sarah Jessica Parker. Parker, I can't see a movie with her starring in it. The closeup shots of her make it impossible for me to focus.

It is indeed a shame that she's fallen off the radar a bit lately. After I saw her in Ghost World, I looked forward to seeing what other sorts of diverse stuff she'd give us, but then...hmm. I doubt I'm alone in thinking that she deserves to be as popular as Scarlett.

Radical change in looks, too, as Lindsey pointed out. I think I prefer the "un-Hollywood" look that she had going before.

I first became acquainted with her as the cute little sister in All I Want for Christmas with Ethan Randall aka Ethan Embry. "Have yourself a merry little Christmas. Have yourself a merry little Christmas. Have yourself a merry little Christmas." When I saw her again in American Beauty, I was shocked. Gone was the blonde little cherub, and replaced with the sulky, awkward Ally Sheedy a la' Breakfast Club type.:D

She's a good actress, though, and I wouldn't mind seeing her in some character roles. Scarlett Johansson is a bit overrated anyways.

Steve Buscemi is a wonderful actor. It doesn't matter whether the role is big or small. He always manages to bring a special vibrancy to his characters. Loved him in The Big Lebowski. "I am the walrus! I am the walrus!":D

Personally, I think she looks MUCH better as a brunette.

And her next movie, Train, looks godawful. Too bad because I use to like her. Besides the already mentioned American Beauty, I liked her in the Jack Ryan movies she did as well as Hocus Pocus and the underrated family adventure flick Alaska.

I really liked Hocus Pocus and Ghost World. She did good with her smaller roles in the Jack Ryan movies. She was in an Sci-Fi anthology flick. I forget the name but the story she did was good. I saw on of her newer flicks called "Dark Corners". But it was like $20 so I passed on it. I might rent it if I remember.

I tried to watch American Beauty once. She was good for the 10 mins of movie I saw. I found it to be extremely boring so I didnt finish it.

Too bad she isnt in more movies. She is a good actress that could do real movies. I think she could be in league with Christina Ricci, Scar Jo, and Keira Knightly.

No one said anything remotely resembling anything that in the least bit sounds like what you are talking about. Who said anything that even sounded like her being a bad person? Everyone here, including Lindsey (who's opinion you claim to disagree with) has said they like her a lot and want to see her in more movies. That was the tone of the thread all the way until you came in and totally without reason made it sound like the thread was all about saying she's gone down hill, and added a little commentary about how you feel about people doing that (the thing no one was doing)

The thread title was a bit misleading I guess. You can read it using Jerry Seinfeld's voice or Lewis Black's. I guess you did the latter.

It's really not that big of a deal, but your response was, undoubtedly totally out of context with the rest of the thread. This is one of those occasions where if you did actually read through the thread, that would be much worse than if you hadn't.
