This is one of those albums that comes along only too rarely. The kind that makes me sit up and take notice the first time I hear it only to reveal further layers of brilliance on the second then the third then the fourth plays...and so on. Glasgow has a great music scene just now. So many up and coming bands making amazing music. Malcolm Middleton (I know...he's from Falkirk...don't kill me). Glasvegas. Strike The Colours. Sons And Daughters. The Twilight Sad (some of whom hail from my home toon of Kilsyth). And now Frightened Rabbit. Simply put this is the best album i've heard so far this year. And i've heard some good ones. The subject matter of the songs is mainly the disintegration of relationships and the aftermath of such events. Sounds depressing...right? And it probably should be. But it manages to stay just the right side of maudlin and present to the ears of the listener some of the most brutally honest, stirring, hearfelt songs on the the subject of getting your heart ripped from your chest and kicked around town like a burst football you're ever likely to hear. I can't even choose favourites. I tried. Sure there are a couple of minor instrumental tracks on the album...but even those serve a purpose. This is just a brilliantly cohesive collection of songs. Seriously...check this out. It's fucking magnificent and if it doesn't make your heart beat faster i'd suggest a trip to the hospital. You might be dead.
