NBC wasn't expected to announce it until next month, but word has leaked to Fox News that Jimmy Fallon is set to take Conan O'Brien's job as host of "Late Night" in 2009 when O'Brien takes over "The Tonight Show" from Jay Leno, who is leaving as host in May, 2009.

Fox News' Roger Friedman writes:

There's much debate about letting Leno leave NBC etc., but right now let's just concentrate on Jimmy. He's the perfect successor to Conan and should have just as big an audience when he takes the reins. Fallon is one of those great underrated performers. This should be the right milieu for him.

Fallon, who recently married producer Nancy Juvonen, is said to be thrilled and ready, if not a little scared, about taking Conan's desk. He still has to pick a producer and a band, among other things.

I say that is a BAD choice. Fallon is about as funny as John Kerry.

and let me guess, Horatio Sanz is his Andy Richter... because that's the only time when Fallon is funny-- when he and Sanz flub their lines and lose it

I'd rather see Kimmel do it.

I'll be the first to say that I'm excited about this and I think it's excellent news.

No matter who they pick they are going to get torn to pieces by loyal Conan fanatics.

Shit! It was bad enough that Conan is replacing the blatantly superior Leno in the first place.

I hope that's sarcasm.

And I'm a loyal Conan fan, and I would be fine with numerous people taking over. Jimmy Fallon just sucks.

Not really. It's just a matter of Fallon being really, really unfunny. He's a much better choice than Carson Daly, but that's about where it ends.

This will bomb as hard as The Chevy Chase Show. Remember that? No? Exactly.

If I had to pick someone from SNL I'd pick Bill Hader. At least he has talent.

I love Conan, I think he's the funniest of the late night hosts but I don't know if his humor will work with Leno's audience. Fallon is an unfunny idiot so it looks like I'll be flippin the channel after the Tonight Show when this prophecy is fulfilled.

This is such a ludacris idea. Fallon wasn't even that good on SNL, let alone give him his own show?? The ratings will plumet, no doubt about that. I'm a fan of both Conan and Leno because they are funny. Fallon....not so funny.

I really hated it when Fallon and Sanz would be in the same sketches. I REALLY hate this idea.:mad:

I don't know how well he interviews, but that's an awesome idea. Hader seems like he'd be great in a talk/variety show. Maybe it's just because I'm picturing him interviewing Gwenyth Paltrow while wearing a pencil mustache and talking with a Spanish accent, but I don't know... That guy has a lot of character and charisma. They should also film the show with like a yellowish tint to make it look 70s-ish. Don't know why... they should jsut do that with more shows.

A college dropout who has the distinct dishonor of being the only SNL alumni (God, even saying that I feel Belushi, Farley, and Hartman are rolling over in their graves) to CONSISTENTLY crack during almost ALL of his sketches...

DOES NOT a great late night talk show make.

SHIVER ME TIMBERS...

So Late Night is going wrapping up after so many decades on television.
Well, I've still got my memories of Letterman and Conan.
You know this is going to suck historical balls.
I know when Conan first arrived, people were like "who the hell is this geek?" but he proved himself.
Jimmy Fallon already has a track record with the public.
"Taxi"
"Fever Pitch"
"Doogal"

It's not a good record.
It's actually a bad record.
So what qualifies him to take over this show?
There are NO other comedians that were considered?
Lewis Black isn't doing anything?
Late Night With Lewis Black would be fucking uproariously funny.
And I don't use the word uproariously lightly.

Carson Daly would be a better choice.
Doesn't he have a show on at 3AM in the morning that no one watches?

I dunno, I kinda like Fallon. At least during his SNL days.
I also thought this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAGMQQefj38) was cute.

NBC might as well just fly to my home, knock on my door, and piss on my rug.

How can they replace Genius with that? Give Andy Richter the spot!

Kinda deissapointed with all the negative feedback toward Fallon, I really think he's extremely funny, I loved Fever Pitch. I like his comedy act and like most of his sketches on SNL.

Also Vong thats hilarious,

When a sith try to get at you drop it like its hot, when a wookie get an attitude drop it like its hot. Luuuke I'm your father.

I also really loved this.

I love Conan and am glad to see he's replacing Leno, though I really love Leno's tonight show and am sad to see him leave. So I have faith that Jimmy will get it right.

I hope that's sarcasm.

I like Conan and his material is generally good, but Leno is way less annoying. Whatever great genius he had when he was writing all the best episodes of The Simpsons has been lost.

Too bad Tina Fey's already got a solid gig with "30 Rock." Not only would it be cool to have a woman step into that job, she'd be a helluva lot more entertaining.

I think SolidStealth nailed it, too. Horatio's probably been blowing up Fallon's phone since NBC made the announcment.

He was alright on SNL's Weekend Update, but it doesn't mean he'll be able to fill Conan's shoes. This is a horrible hire.

l.. considering Lorne Michaels is i believe the Executive Producer for Late Night... the choice isnt that shocking... Conan was an SNL writer, his successor is an old SNL cast member...

he may be ok... or he may be a very smug dude... i think he will be smug, cuz thats how he comes off to me!

So is this confirmed for sure then? How reliable is this leak? I remember hearing rumours about Fallon taking over for Conan almost immediately after it was announced Conan was taking over for Leno.

I don't know about Fallon...there's a bunch of people that could do a much better job. But still, I'll be curious to see how he does and will obviously tune in.

I predict that Craig Ferguson is going to whoop Fallon's ass in the 12:35 time slot when that happens, though. Maybe Fallon will bomb horribly and Ferguson's contract will expire, and Ferguson will take over Late Night. That's the way it should be, IMO. But I guess CBS needs Ferguson right about now, and maybe he'll eventually take over for Letterman. I was really suprised to hear that last week Ferguson actually beat Conan in the ratings on one certain night.

Anyway, I guess we'll see what happens.

How do you go from "blatantly superior" to "less annoying?" And I think even "less annoying" is stretching it. Conan is hilarious.

Craig has the best talk show on TV, imo. I hope he takes over The Late Show whenever Letterman retires, but until then, Craig will kick Fallon's ass in ratings.

pretty lame choice... I'll hold final judment till I see an episode though.

If you watched the strike-laden episodes, you would know the writers are actually the ones holding Conan back. With him just being himself during the Strike, he was absolute fucking gold. He's solid with his writers but he's much better when he's allowed to do his own schtick.
