Expect many orgies and people getting blown to pieces. Oh and there's a rape somewhere.
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands — "Basic Instinct" director Paul Verhoeven has written a book that contradicts biblical teaching by suggesting that Jesus might have been fathered by a Roman soldier who raped Mary.
An Amsterdam publishing house said Wednesday it will publish the Dutch filmmaker's biography of Jesus, "Jesus of Nazareth: A Realistic Portrait," in September.
Verhoeven is best known as the director of blockbuster films including "Basic Instinct" and "RoboCop," but he is also a member of "Jesus Seminar," a group of scholars and authors that seeks to establish historical facts about Jesus.
Marianna Sterk of the publishing house J.M. Meulenhoff said the book includes several ideas that run contrary to Christian faith, including the suggestion that Jesus could be the son of a Roman soldier who raped Mary during a Jewish uprising against Roman rule in 4 B.C.
The book also claims that Judas Iscariot was not responsible for Jesus' betrayal, she said.
The movie director's claims were greeted with some skepticism among those who have dedicated their careers to studying the life of Jesus. One issue is that there is very little information about the life of Jesus outside of the Gospels. The Gospels as understood by Christians for nearly 2,000 years do not support Verhoeven's ideas.
William Portier, a professor of religious studies at the University of Dayton, in Ohio, said the Jesus Seminar is known for making provocative claims, but "they are real scholars _ you have to deal with them."
However, he said Verhoeven's ideas sounded "pretty out there."
John Dominic Crossan, a Jesus Seminar founder, agreed. He said that while Verhoeven was a member in good standing, there is little evidence for the view that Jesus was illegitimate.
Crossan said the claim is first reported in a polemic written in the second century against the Book of Matthew, intended for a Jewish audience.
"It's an obvious first retort to claims that Mary was a virgin," Crossan said. "If you wanted to do a hatchet job on Jesus' reputation, this would be the way."
The most likely scenario for people who don't accept that Jesus was literally the son of God and had no human father is simply that he was the son of Joseph, Crossan said.
Sterk said the book will be translated into English in 2009. Verhoeven hopes it will be a springboard for him to raise interest in making a film along the same lines, she said.
Verhoeven, 69, has dreamed of making a movie about Jesus' life for decades, she said.
Asked whether it would be difficult to follow Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" and Martin Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ," she said Verhoeven knows he may be somewhat late to market.
"He is painfully aware of that," she said. "However, he has quite a different angle."

I'm not sure but the real question is if Paul Verhoeven makes it into a movie will there be lots of sex, nudity, violence and gore:D?
Personally I doubt it, I mean is anyone actually gonna take Verhoeven's book about Jesus seriously? The man made Showgirls for fuck sakes.

Paul...what?

True, but he also made Turkish Delight, The Fourth Man, Black Book and many more highly respected films and is the sole lay member of this group of scholars of Jesus' life. I think his take has to be respected. Plus it's likely to be hugely entertaining. Please GOD let him come to London for his book tour when it comes out in English, I'd love to meet him.

Considering that Jesus could very well have been made up, he'll have to take a lot of liberties.

Probably will be one of the best selling books of all time after all the controversy and uproar about it.
Can't wait to see/hear the Catholic Church's response to it.

:DLOL!:D
As for the topic, I won't read the book and as a Christian, I can't say that I'm too keen on seeing a film where Jesus' mother is raped. Where is the respect these days:mad:?

I hope whoever plays Jesus doesn't give a shit performance like the one Jim Caviezel gave in which he was nothing more than a bloodied up S&M doll. Nobody tops Willem Dafoe.

I'd be inclined to believe that from a historical point of view.

I'm not religious, so I'm merely amused by this theory. I would make a comedy about dozens of men coming forward and boasting to have raped Mary. I would cast Anna Nicole Smith's corpse as Mary.

Not really. Every Jesus movie has to take a lot of liberties because the written history of him is so incredibly vague.

I was going to post this a few days ago, but got pissed off when I read the below two comments. Paul Verhoeven needs to learn how to read
BLASPHEMY!
Jesus could be the son of a Roman soldier who raped Mary during a Jewish uprising against Roman rule in 4 B.C.
The book also claims that Judas Iscariot was not responsible for Jesus' betrayal.
Both of those statements completely contrary to what the Bible says.

It seems almost everyone has their own different interpretation of what the Bible says, and means, and what we should all do in it's name anyhow. Why can't Paul Verhoeven have his?

Nope. Have you read the Bible from cover to cover? If the answer is no, then before you think it's amusing to make fun of me. Try reading it, then you'll have a clearer understanding. Verhoeven is making his own version of what he thinks happened. Not what actually happened. There's a huge difference, man. The Bible believe it or not is the most read book in history, and I'm sure that Verhoeven himself has read some of it. Saying that Jesus is the result of Mary being raped by a randy roman is ludicrous. Jesus real father is God. But he was born by way of Joseph and Mary here on Earth to do his work and ultimately be crucified for all the sins of mankind. He was then resurrected a few days later and returned to heaven as an immortal.
Yes, it's all confusing and daunting to me was well, because people are quicker to disbelieve something than believe it. We are a race of skeptics by nature, true? Particularly if one doesn't understand it fully. But despite countless attempts at disproving the writings in the Bible, the truth remains the same. Jesus is the only son of God, and was not a bastard or some no-hoper. As for Judas betraying Jesus. That is also factual and clearly explained not only in the Bible, but in accurate historical publications. So, yes, I strongly disagree with those two issues. Sure, Paul Verhoeven can make this inaccurate bastardization of what really happened. But he's gonna cop alot of flak for it...whoops, too late.
Oh, and I owe you one of these ---> :p

We are a race of skeptics because whenever we read something as ludicrous as an old man putting two of every animal on a boat, a little voice in our heads is always there to say "Oh yeah, this is bullshit."
Besides, if you want to address your point of view that's fine, but you might want to keep in mind that a lot of people here aren't quite bought on the idea that the Bible is the written history of the world. So saying, "No, no, no...this is what happened, and I laugh at all the ignorant who defy it" isn't going to make you seem the wiser.

As he said, try gaining a better understanding before you say things like this.

He didn't say that at all and you making yourself sound just as 'wiser' as he is.

Actually, I do have some knowledge of the subject at hand. Being the devil's advocate (pun intended), I plan to shatter everyone's faith in anything.
EDIT: come to think of it, I'm just going to bail out now. Religion isn't exactly a cozy topic to discuss on this forum...or any forum.
