Just had a quick listen, for me it's style is more along with_teeth & year zero, which i liked. It's a nice and solid little package, i'll give it a better listen in a day or two, but so far i dig it quite nicely.

Awesome that they gave it out as a completely free download to thank us fans for purchasing Ghosts. Loved Ghosts! And I'm loving The Slip too!

I honestly think the first half is as close to a total wash as I've ever seen in terms of any NIN releases.
However the last three songs are pretty exceptional, especially Corona Radiata, which is absolutely tremendous.

Wow. This is truly a band of the future. I love how Trent is cranking out music at a frenzied clip, although it would be nice to hear something in the same league as The Fragile or The Downward Spiral.
PS-Am I to assume that this is Year Zero 2? What I've heard is okay. I'm more into NIN's aggressive stuff.

I hear elements of a lot of Trent's previous releases in this, once again, all the way up to Ghosts. And the first couple of tracks sound pretty aggressive to me. It's not quite up to the level of Downward Spiral (that's like asking Tool to make something as great as Aenima, or Radiohead to make something like OK Computer), but it blows away With Teeth. I think his recent output has been pretty great..
Will definitely be going to see NIN live this year.

Discipline: Ridiculously bland and lame techno/dance song that I can't wait to hear at my local all-ages goth dance club
Echoplex: See above
The rest.....mostly doesn't even warrant emotion, whether it be positive or negative.
Having said that, Head Down is a step in the right direction, sort of reminds me of The Big Come Down, though not quite as good.
Corona Radiata is a positively amazing, seven-minute epic that doesn't waste a single second. If only Ghosts I-IV could have been this effective....
The Four of Us are Dying is also really effective, and if this was the direction NIN was going, I'd be very optimistic about future releases. As it stands, most of the record doesn't hold a candle to these three tracks, and while I'm grateful Reznor keeps pumping out new material, I just wish some of it was even a fraction as good as the mid-late nineties stuff, although I did appreciate Year Zero, the subsequent releases are just running in place.

Lights in The Sky-I think this track should be in the same league as Hurt.

Well, everyone is going to have a different opinion on this album as well as the direction Trent should take.
If Trent tries to please everybody, you end up with something like The Fragile. I loved it, it's great, I've listened to it hundreds of times--but it's all over the place. The album sounds a bit dated now too.
Re: The Slip, I love the live feel of having Josh Freese on live drums on these songs. This album is pretty mind-blowing for just a give-away.

Downward Spiral (that's like asking Tool to make something as great as Aenima, or Radiohead to make something like OK Computer)
Why not ask them to do something great? These artists are obviously capable of creating otherworldly, innovative music. They're all coasting from an artistic standpoint.
I do wish Maynard and the gang would take a cue from Trent, and become more prolific.

I don't think I'm asking too much and as fans, we should hold them to a high regard, after all, we're not discussing the music of a band Stabbing Westward or something.
In regards to NIN's new stuff, it's just so watered down and bland. I'm not against minimalist music, I love Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Vol. II and that's about as minimalist as you can get, but Ghosts I-IV for example, proves that when you strive to make an album that is bare in nature, there is a very fine line between mind-blowing in a quiet, subdued way and just plain boring and DOA.
I honestly would like someone to explain to me what NIN's new stuff (Ghosts/The Slip) actually brings to the table in terms of pushing his music forward. Just because it's different sounding then stuff he's done in the past, doesn't make it good or adventerous, and saying "Well not everyone will like everything he does" is a copout, and if we all adopted that mindset, there would be no discussion.
I just don't hear anything in here that sounds like Trent is pushing himself, I mean he could write something like Echoplex in his sleep. The fact that it's free doesn't make it ok either. More acceptable, but still should be subject to our objective analysis.

I'm glad to see another NIN fan and you are entitled to your own opinion. I too agree that Trent has not pushed himself musically within the past two releases. But, does the guy have to make great and adventurous records every time out? Why can't he just make music without having people demanding that he out do himself with every new record. I'm not including you in that last statement because I know you didn't say that, but there are people who do. I like Ghosts because I've always wanted an entire NIN album of instrumentals and the stuff on that album I actually do enjoy. And I like the new album a lot. Yeah, he's not pushing any boundaries but it's not terrible music either.

You can't deny the mans work ethic. I said in another thread jokingly he seemed to be tired of the 6 year break in between albums. But listen to "The Fragile" and you can tell he wasn't playing johnny-fuck-around during the time between its release and TDS. What an album. He's making music like it's nobody's business and I have nothing but respect for that.
I haven't listen to NiN nearly as much as I used to, but to this day I still love the first 3 full lenghts. The Broken EP is my favorite work of his. I mean come on, "Happiness in Slavery" for fucks sake!

We should just not bring up With Teeth. I mean, it's not terrible, but wow. When you put it up against TDS or The Fragile, it's small potatoes.

Screw it, it's free, that's what counts. Trent is my friend.

I thought this was pretty weak on the first listen, but it's slowly growing on me.
Pretty much the same thing for me. I still consider The Fragile to be the best thing NIN has done, and I don't expect any thing from now on to come close to it.
The Slip is easy listening and has some really cool stuff in it. 1,000,000 and Lights In The Sky are great songs, and some of the instrumental stuff like The Four Of Us Are Dying is pretty interesting. The album was free, which only makes things sweeter.
So while I will freely acknowledge that Trent has done better work, you will not hear any complaints from me about The Slip.
Here's looking forward to Year One (Or Year Zero:2...whatever) which we will probably have in a few months.;)

The small amounts of Melody that Reznor had in With Teeth and prior NIN albums seems completely gone....it was nearly absent on Year Zero and its not here either......
Its way too synthetic for me....even for NIN.

It seems the only time Trent can make emotionally invested music is when he's wasted. Year Zero was cool, but emotionally vacant, and his subsequent releases are incredibly cold and sterile.
There is really nothing to The Slip, the more I listen to it, the more I think it's total fucking garbage.

"Lights In The Sky" has no melody?
"Zero Sum" from Year Zero has no emotional heft?

His lyrical structures and delivery havent changed from Year Zero to The Slip....and all the songs within sound the same to me.....they might as well all be "Survivalism".
Maybe I just don't like music that sounds like a computer and an incredibly distorted guitar...constantly....song after song after song.

Do you mean you can't get melody with synth.
It doesn't matter what instrument you use, physical or digital, a melody is a melody despite it's 'form'. That's what it kinda sounds like your saying anyways. But i'd like to hear more from ya, because there is a difference with TR's older and newer stuff, i just dont think synth is an issue, just a different sound. Isnt Industrial stuff synth heavy? Not liek 80's style but i mean, synthy anyways. Trent's earlier stuff did start liek that.

there's just way too much treble...the song structures all seem very similar to me.....there's no tempo changes or anything...just very monotonous drum beats dominating......i'd take 1/2 the stuff off With Teeth over this any day
I'm not saying the songs have to be radio friendly, it just seems like he's trying too hard not to be part of that crowd.

Not overly familiar with NIN. I've only heard the typical "Everyone's heard these tracks" tracks ("The Perfect Drug", "The Hand That Feeds", "Closer", etc.), which is odd because what I've heard I've liked. Not sure why I never hunted down for more NIN.
I'm downloading this out of pure curiosity. I'll see how it is.
