Oh no, another rant by jackson! Ok, now that that is out of the way.
A lady came in tonight with some movies to return. But she put up a giant stink because she was offended by material in the movies. So much so that she wants us to change the ratings on the movies to something higher. The movies in question? Norbit and Hollywood Homicide. According to her 'both movies contained foul language and sexual related scenes and dialouge.' Both movies are rated PG-13 by the way. Her words were 'you should change the ratings on these movies to R or higher.' It was all I could do to not laugh in her face over this. I pointed out to her that the ratings of each movie was in fact PG-13 and that both movies say why they are rated what they are rated. Norbit says right on the back 'Rated PG-13 for language, crude sexual humor and brief nudity'. THE VERY THINGS SHE WAS OFFENDED BY AND COMPLAINING ABOUT.
This is just complete and outright insanity if you ask me. Of course a lady I work with took her side, and left a note for the head of the A/V Dept. to change the ratings. I'm second in command so I left a note myself saying 'dont bother' and explaining why. This could be a constant on going thing. This woman still rents movies, she took more out tonight even. So what if she comes back with them and wants us to change the ratings on them, because she was offended by something in them? This could continue until we've changed the ratings on every movie in our collection, just to please this woman.
People like her are what piss me off more than anything and why America is the way it is regarding certain things, sex especially. One person gets offended by something and tries to ruin it all for everyone else. Say I take out 'Dawn of the Dead', knowing that it is a zombie movie Rated R, and then return it and say 'Holy cow this movie had people dying in it, it should be rated higher than R.' Who the fuck is she to come in and start demanding we do things like that? Who the fuck is she to decide what should be right for everyone else. I wanted to tell her 'look, the movie is PG-13 because thats what the fucking MPAA rated it. If it was bad, they would've rated it something higher. The MPAA controls the ratings, not us librarians so fucking deal with it.' But of course I couldnt because I'd get in big trouble at work.
All I can do is bitch about it here and fend off replies from people who will no doubt insult me and call me an idiot and tell me to calm down.

Fuck that stupid cunt. That's fuckin horse-shit.... I'm tired of these uptight, PC fucking pussies! I still can't understand why violence is so completely fucking acceptable... How I can watch a man's face get completely mutilated on the Discovery Health Channel from a car accident, but I can't see a fucking female NIPPLE without it being blocked out! I fucking HATE that gaddamned double-standard!

Why would you get in trouble for setting her straight? I mean, as long as you went about it minus the expletives, I can't see why anyone would object. You'd just be informing her about the intricacies of the MPAA. That's not much more different than explaining how the Dewey Decimal System works.
Also, don't calm down. Don't ever calm down, you. Just imagine how barren this rant forum would then become.

FUCK YEAH!!!!
We need more cock on-screen. Lots of tits and cock. Preferably tits and cock together. Preferably rubbing up on one another even.
I hate people who have absolutly no consept of the rather easy to understand rating system we use.

What's wrong with the world today is old grannies in Buttfuck Egypt complaining about shitty movies?
Chomsky will be relieved.

Why did you even entertain her for more than a second? Just say you'll talk to the manager about it and never do it. Everyone wins.

I think he's looking at the bigger picture.
The woman is ridiculous from the sounds of it though. Luckily I don't think you would have to worry about her making any sort of impact on society since she thinks the ratings system is created by you guys.

Wow. I've worked at a video store for five years now and I do get stupid questions, but no one has ever asked me to something like that.

Another thing about this rant...
I haven't seen Hollywood Homicide, but judging by the title, I'll assume it has some violent content. She didn't complain at all about that. Shooting, killing and beatings are just fine, but a couple words and some (assumedly) non-disfigured body parts aren't... anyone else see anything wrong with this?
Note to OP: You should change the ratings though. Make them G and get a good laugh out of it.

Ban her from the store and let her know that she can rent from elsewhere.

Jackson, you should of made it up to her by having her rent Bad Santa. A fun Christmas film for the entire family!;)

Jackson13, this also happened to me when Twister was released in 1996 on VHS. A customer complained about the rating as he found it inappropriate. But I don't create the rating. I have nothing to do with rating the film. The Ontario Film Board does - the government. So I politely gave him all their contact information so he can vent to them. That's the appropriate avenue for you sir as I JUST FUCKING WORK HERE.
You should tell that lady to complain to the MPAA.
Reminds me of the best story of working in a video store. When Abel Ferrara's 1992 film, Bad Lieutenant came out on VHS, one of the store's regulars rented it along with all the other new releases of the day.
Later he brought the film back and complained about it as he thought it was a family film!? A FUCKING FAMILY FILM!?!? I laughed inside and of course let him exchange it for something else. But how the fuck you think Bad Lieutenant is a family film is beyond me. Shit, Harvey's holding up a revolver on the artwork. Dumbass. I even asked him how he thought it was a family film with the tagline: Gambler. Thief. Junkie. Killer. Cop. LOL. Was quite funny!

"Yes, you'll find Bad Lieutenant in the Family Section under "B", sir."
Sometimes it's simply better for business to let lousy customers take their money elsewhere. If she's persistently difficult, you might need to advise her of her option to stop frequenting your store.

That reminds me of this time this dude's dog was staring at my bagel and I asked the guy if I could give the dog a bite and he said, "No, he's on a diet."

As soon as she said anything about changin the ratings i would have asked her to direct me to the sign that says 'MPAA Head Offices' and then would have gladdly done it for her.
Shit, you should have given her Wild Things to rent, that things like 14A!

Next time she comes in, look at her selections and say that you can't rent them to her... your conscience just won't let you... because she will probably be offended. After several trips to the counter, she'll get frustrated and never come back.

I have said it once, and I will say it a billion times before I die: working with the public fucking sucks. For every delightful person you get, you get (seemingly) about 40 assholes. Jesus.
You know, common sense should make her think: oh, I chose these movies I must have not looked at them properly to see if they were "bad'. No, take it out on the sales clerk. Idiot. Why doesn't she just rent Disney cartoons if she's so worried.

Well the head of A/V took my side and told me 'no way in hell are we doing something like that, it'll never end.' So, awesome, case closed. Now all we'll have to deal with is this lady complaining over everything she watches.

How the fuck would you change the ratings to begin with? Put a little sticker on the back of it with the letter "R" written in black sharpie? Man, there are some ridiculous people where I work since I have to deal with people's food... But man.
"Yes, I'll gladly change this movie from a PG-13 rating to an R. And for my next trick, I'll be turning water into wine! And maybe even pull a rabbit out of my ass!"

They should just be honest about the disclaimers:
"This movie may contain language that triggers memories of spousal abuse."
"There are situations in this movie that will make you feel uncomfortable about your own sexuality."

The thing that struck me the most about this woman complaining though was that she has a kid herself. He was standing there with her. So shes getting all offended by sex jokes in a movie when she has obviously had sex at some point in her life. That'd be like me having a beer and then a few years later saying something like 'Ugh, people who drink offend me.'

Welcome to planet Earth my friend, home of the hypocrites. ;)
On a small side note here, my aunt always felt that Benny Hill should be X-Rated...like porn is.
Maybe her and your "favorite customer" should hook up and clean up the world???

That's how we ended up with parental advisory stickers on CDs. It didn't exactly change the world either.

Yeah, I'm glad to see those stickers helped save the world and turn the kids around. The day after they were first used - the birds came out and sang, everyone became wonderful to each other, the sun was shiny and bright, and all the world's problems disappeared. God bless Tipper Gore.

Yeah, it helped educate people on which albums to buy. Never heard that band? Worried they might suck? Well, if they had a "Parental Advisory" sticker on it, you knew you at least might get to hear some vulgar/amusing/curse-laden/weird lyrics. (Pre-downloading of course).
Just like the MPAA ratings system--kind of guides you to what kind of movie to go see. Don't you just wince when a flick you're really hyped about gets rated PG-13?

Jackson13's crazy customer will probably one day return a copy of T4 and Live Free or Die Hard and she'll say "These movie should be rated R!"
And he can responde "FUCKING A RIGHT! I'm with you woman!"

Most people like that crazy lady you have to deal with are the biggest reasons why a lot of things in our country is wrong. But, I just found out, while living in Germany, violence seems to be the thing that gets censored from movies here. I was watching tv the other day and saw a good old action movie from the US. I noticed though, they cut out whatever they considered 'too violent'. But, on the other hand, they've got tits and asses bared full screen and that's ok. Sex here seems to be considered alright. They even show it late in the evening. I just saw a thing about why masturbation is good for you. And they showed a dude rubbing himself under a blanket. And then they showed a naked chick fingering herself under blankets too (well, alright, they have the limit of not showing beaver).
So, it's pretty strange to see that and stupid shit in the US and realize how backwards everything seems all over. I say, we should be able to watch our movies the way we want to without these morons constantly bitching about it not being pure enough compared to 7th heaven. God I hated that show!

Yeah, like the next Terminator. You know damn well they'll release the 'Unrated' version on DVD in hopes to boost sales. Greedy bastards.
