I started listening to it and was aghast over the lyrics and such then I tuned out to it and had it running on the background and began to like it quite a bit.
This is Weezer anew! I cannot imagine them taking this album seriously. It's almost as if they only decided to get back together to release the cheekiest thing imaginable--one need only to consult Exhibit B.
I hated their last album and the Green One severely but now that I've accepted they'll never produce another Pinkerton I can take pleasures in some of what they produce
Pork and Beans was awful--this is the direction they need to go in, more costumes, more mustaches, more hooks stitched together Blueberry Boat style
this has to be a deliberate affront to their fans--I love it when a band on such a high stage releases something utterly confounding, it would be great if like Coldplay released something like the second half of "Low" and had no noticeable singles
Edit: I cannot fathom how fucking giddy this song is making me; I'm having trouble suppressin a grin whenever Rivers gets to the I AM THE GREATEST MAN THAT EVER LIVED portion
Edit #2: "All the world's a stage." Esoteric quoting there Rivers!
Edit #3: I'm in love with the little glow around the Weezer text.
Edit #4: Wilsonian.

Here is what wikipedia has to say about the album:
"Weezer's sixth studio album will be released on June 24, 2008, just over three years after their latest release, Make Believe. Rick Rubin produced the album[30] and Rich Costey provided the mixing[31] for what Weezer fans are calling "Album Six".[32] The record is being described as "experimental", and according to Cuomo, includes longer and non-traditional songs, TR-808 drum machines, synthesizers, Southern rap, baroque counterpoint, and band members other than Cuomo writing, singing, and switching instruments."
This sounds pretty cool. I like that the article makes a point of saying it will feature "band members other then cuomo writing, singing, and switching instruments" lol. Also it's produced by Rick Rubin who is totally sick.

Haven't visited or posted here in ages, but most of you are WAY off the mark with these songs, in my opinion. Personally, I think this is the best stuff I've heard out of Weezer since Pinkerton (at the VERY LEAST the Green Album). How "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" isn't in everyone's top 10 Weezer songs would be beyond me unless that person just failed to have any sense of humor whatsoever. I think the main issue here is that people are taking these songs far too seriously -- this is Weezer with a self-deprecating sense of humor like that of "In the Garage" except inflated to a larger extent. I mean, to say that "Troublemaker" or "Greatest Man" aren't some of the best songs Weezer's put out in a while is just baffling to me. If not the humor, LISTEN TO THE HOOKS. They're as present and up-front as they've been in a good while without being too repetitive or obvious. And honestly, I'd take any of these eight new songs over almost anything from Make Believe just about any day of the week.
As someone who hasn't been a FAN of Weezer since Pinkerton, I will say that this could be Weezer turning good again, because so far I'm entertained as hell by these songs.
Pork and Beans makes me cringe. You know a band goes belly up when they mentioned Timbaland in a song to "perfect the art" of reaching the "chart"...
It's called "sarcasm." The point of that entire song is Rivers' contrasting his obvious aging and preference to be himself rather than hip with the wants of the record company (hiring new producers, wearing Rogaine, etc.).

Word.
I can understand why people wouldn't like this song (it's unconventional) but I think it's a mistake to simply dismiss it as inferior to Blue Album/Pinkerton just because it doesn't sound like what you think Weezer should sound like.

I guess to each there own but to me this album is such garbage.I am a die hard weezer fan and have been since day one but this is the first time I will be passing on one of their albums.
The songs are either a mess or just plain forgettable. The lyrics are garbage especially songs like Dreamin' the chorus is just so god awful and painful to listen to.The greatest man who ever lived is a jumbled mess and the intro with the sirens is just plan annoying.
The only song I can even stand is Thought I knew and Rivers doesn't even sing it but its the closest thing to a good song on the album.I've given this thing many listens and there are still two songs no one has heard but man they tried to experiment with too much here and it didn't work.

Yeah, I guess you're right. It's the same as the first album, only without the good music. And the memorable vocal melodies. But man, those lyrics are silly. I can't stop humming Weezer's sense of humor.
Just because they're not the SAME music and melodies doesn't make them automatically inferior to those on the past releases.
If people want the same thing over and over again, become a fan of AC/DC or listen to the albums that have already been made. If songs like "Greatest Man" (one of Weezer's biggest musical accomplishments of their career, whether you like or dislike the song) doesn't constitute "good music" and "memorable vocal melodies" (III AM THE GREEEAAATTEESSTTT MAN THAT EVER LIVVVEEDDDD), I think there's a chance that nostalgia's got a little too much of a hold on you. Though that's to be expected with bands like this that are around for over a decade, constantly losing old fans and picking up new ones with every small change they make. And lyrics aside (purely for argument's sake), tell me that "Pork and Beans" isn't one of the most memorable and well-constructed songs that they've done in ages. This album is a sign of Weezer branching out, it's a sign of Weezer having a sense of humor, but most of all it's a sign of Weezer actually trying to write good songs again and breaking away from the autopilot they've been on since the green album.
But I guess everyone has their own opinion which can't always be changed by the cold, hard fact that is my opinion. Ah well. I mean, what am I expected to do with myself besides argue about music? Actually listen to and enjoy it? ;)
countchocula
05-13-2008, 03:16 PM
Just because they're not the SAME music and melodies doesn't make them automatically inferior to those on the past releases.
Of course not. The fact that they are inferior makes them inferior. "Hash Pipe" is a good example of a song that uses the same ingredients as the songs on Blue without actually rehashing a riff or a vocal melody.
I'm content with the way I've delineated my point. Obviously, it's a matter of opinion.

Firstly, that line is drenched in sarcasm. Most of "Pork and Beans" is not to be taken seriously... at all.
Secondly, Weezer has never recorded a bad album. Sure, Blue and Pinkerton are light years ahead of their latter 3 albums, but there are great songs on all of their albums. It just so happens that there are also some really shitty songs on Green, Mala, and Make Believe. But they have retained their sense of humor.
Thirdly, I am waiting until June 3rd to hear the new record, but I am excited. It sounds goofy and energetic, which is what they've been missing.

"Pork & Beans" is a good video for a laugh, but the song itself really doesn't represent the "experimenting" and "change" that people on here are going on about.
Personally, I've never been much of a Weezer fan. Not enough to buy their stuff, but I never mind listening to them. One song I can't stand is "Undone" from the blue album, as I find it to be absolute tripe. "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" makes me think of later Beatles, Brian Wilson, and rock operas. Anybody that has a problem with those things might be lame.
As for Metallica, Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets are elite over anything else they've ever done. And Justice For All... has some great songs, and is itself a great album. But it's also the worst produced out of their good albums which holds it down.

This from the same person who's posted in this very thread making fun of "sensitive die-hard weezer fans" and starts the thread off with "if you enjoy this you are a fucking liar"? Alright then.
I also never said you were negative on everything. Not sure where you got that from.
Also, just to clarify, I am in no way "sensitive about people finding this album to be bad." I'm completely confident that a lot of people will not like this album whatsoever. It's the belittling nature of some of the negative posts in this thread, implying that anyone who could possibly find some enjoyment in this album is some kind of musical plebian, that have just had me rolling my eyes for the majority of the thread. I'm sorry if I can get a little perturbed by stuff like this, but it is a bit ridiculous.

Anyway, getting back to the intended purpose of this thread..
www.megaupload.com/?d=88ULMBR1
There's the link to the low-quality leak. While not the best quality, it's certainly listenable. "Automatic" is okay, but "The Angel and The One" is a pretty nice track. Reminds me of "Only in Dreams" or "Butterfly" or something along those lines.
Overall, I'd stick with my opinion that this is probably their best since Pinkerton (at least their best since Green). Good hooks for the most part, and it feels like Rivers is actually being himself again as opposed to the oft-forced sound of something like Make Believe. I dig it.

Long live the new flesh?
Videodrome comparisons are going to get you nowhere. It's just a tongue-in-cheek video made for fun. What harm does that do to anyone? Nothing. That's what.

#1dvdfan's post kind of re-enforces my point. Weezer is trying to suck in teenagers who don't remember "Buddy Holly." I imagine the next video will parody High School Musical or Flavor of Love/Rock of Love.

Does NOT fucking change the fact that this new album thus far seems quite awesome or that the new video is funny.

Weezer is one of those bands that are a blessing because you can write off someone existentially as a human being if you find out they like them.

Personally, I love TGMTEL, and I'm not a huge Weezer fan at all. I only like about 10 songs out of their whole catalogue. But TGMTEL is so fresh and original I couldn't help but fall in love with it. I don't even think Pork and Beans is that bad, and the video just rules.
This album is obviously just a huge self parody, and I guess if you didn't catch that then people would not enjoy it as much, like most people in this thread. I'm surprised too because this song and most of the album is getting well recieved at other boards I've been at.

I must say I really don't get the outright hostility of pork and beans. Yes Blue and Pinkerton were the last two great albums but Pork And Beans is a great single. I don't get the hatred.

Sorry, but, people who make statements like the one you just made which not only insults but also belittles an entire group of people for the sole reason that they enjoy a band, a harmless one at that who hasn't done anything other than make their own style of music for years, are the kind of people who you can write off existentially as a human being.
Try again.

Finally heard the new album and I'm left with a rather mixed feeling about it. I have to say Pinkerton and Blue are my favorites, and possibly two of my favorite albums of all time, but nothing else they've done has really come close. This album just seems to be repeating everything else we've already heard from the band, and their new "expiriments" go terribly wrong.
1.Blue- 10
2.Pinkerton- 10
3.Red-8
4.Make Beleive- 7
5.Green- 7
6.Maladroit- 7

Okay, after giving the Red album a complete listen, I think it's half good, half mediocre. Beyond "Pork and Beans," "Heart Songs" (my personal favorite), "The Angel and the One" and "Thought I Knew," it was okay but seemed to run together and offer nothing more than hummable/bland tunes. I don't know if "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" works. At all.

Here's how Weezer's discography sits for me now
1. The Green Album - 10/10
2. The Blue Album - 10/10
3. Pinkerton - 9/10
4. The Red Album - 8/10
5. Make Believe - 8/10
6. Maladroit - 7/10

I thought that considering a few kind schmoes seemed to get their knickers in a twist over my previous post, that child rape would be the most fitting topic of outrageousness to get you guys to realize that I was just joshing you, but LordSimen proved otherwise.

Sure the Red Album is no Pinkerton or Blue Album.... But then again Rise & Fall is no Ignition or Smash... American Idiot is no Dookie, Insomniac or Nimrod and so on and so forth...
I'd have to say this probably is their weakest effort.
Automatic, Dreamin' and Troublemaker are decent songs tho.
This album is really good. Way better than the last two.

Liking it. What can I say, I'm a Weezer lifer. Maybe it's only good by comparison to Make Believe, but I really dig this album. Truth be told there is something to like on each of their albums, my problem is that they haven't put together one complete record of great tunes since Pinkerton, and this is no exception. I think Matt Sharp had something to do with that, but I could be wrong...but since he left they haven't been quite as good. It looks like they've patched things up though, apparently he and Rivers have a planned cd down the road.
Album ranking:
1. Pinkerton
2. Blue
3. Maladroit (honestly don't get the hate for this)
4. Red
5. Green
1000. Make Believe

I dig that tune, but for me, my favourite tracks so far are Dreamin', Thought I Knew and Cold Dark World. The Angel and the One isn't bad either.
I think the second half is better than the first for sure. Overall it's a solid record.

Okay, it's grown on me even more and I would consider this their best album since Pinkerton, easily.
How I'd rank the tracks of the regular album, haven't really listened to the bonus tracks much:
1. Thought I Knew
2. Dreamin'
3. The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived
4. Automatic
5. Cold Dark World
6. Everybody Get Dangerous
7. Pork and Beans
8. The Angel and the One
9. Heart Songs
10. Troublemaker
Heart Songs and Troublemaker are the only two that don't gel for me. The rest is really good, and a welcome departure from what I expected from them at this stage.`

Yeah, I dig it. I like that they're trying new things instead of just being the Rivers Cuomo show. It still may be like that behind closed doors, but the creative process appears to be branching to all members. All of them sing lead on the album and they all do admirable jobs in my opinion.
I have to admit, Pork and Beans is really growing on me...probably because the music video for it is awesome. :D
