I was kinda surprised that there wasn't a "Coldplay's new album thread" already established, maybe that's because they aren't that popular on these boards...

Anyways, Coldplay's new album VIVA LA VIDA OR DEATH AND ALL HIS FRIENDS hits June 17th, and here's a brief synopsis of it:

Martin has described this album as a new direction for Coldplay: a change from their past three albums, which they have referred to as a 'trilogy'.[37] Martin has also revealed that this album features much less of his falsetto, and he has allowed his voice's lower register to take precedence.[37] Some songs on Viva la Vida, such as "Violet Hill", contain distorted guitar riffs and bluesy undertones.[37] "Violet Hill" was confirmed as the first single, with a radio release date of 29 April 2008.[38] After the first play, it was freely obtainable from Coldplay's website from 12:15 pm (GMT +0) for one week, until it became commercially available to download on May 6.[39][40] On 23 June, Coldplay will kick off their Viva la Vida World Tour with a free concert at Madison Square Garden.

If you haven't seen the new itunes ad for the song VIVA LA VIDA check it out here (http://youtube.com/watch?v=CRJxe86NPvM&feature=related). Also, the official music video for VIOLET HILL can be seen here (http://youtube.com/watch?v=IakDItZ7f7Q).

I gotta say that I like the new direction they're heading in, VIOLET HILL really strikes me as Oasis-esque, and that's a good thing.

Am I the only Coldplay fan on these boards?

God, I hate Coldplay. I've got nothing against the fans, but I've got everything against Coldplay.

I'm a marginal fan of Coldplay, but mostly am looking forward to this for Eno's production.

I like some of their stuff. Didn't care for most of Parachutes or A Rush of Blood to the Head. Really dug X&Y, though. I might look into this one.

Their new song is damn good. I personally love Coldplay, though Parachutes would be my favorite of them.

I still dont see why people shit on them all the time.

I still dont see why people shit on them all the time.

Probably because they take the more annoying parts of U2 (holier-than-thou, self-important attitude) and Radiohead (overuse of falsetto, a bit too whiny for their own good at times) and meld them into one, more mainstream-acceptable product.

Not that I don't like them. Parachutes was pretty good, Rush of Blood ruled, and I'm kind of interested in seeing where they're going with this one. I'll at least give it a listen.

I have a different explanation.

Remember when "Yellow" came out? There was that music video with Chris Martin walking and singing in the rain. If you look at it, it's somewhat similar to the James Blunt video for "You're Beautiful." I think people generally thought of them as wusses after that video. Of course, whereas Coldplay are men as far as I know, I'm convinced that James Blunt is packing a vagina.

I was...until I heard more songs from the album...and it's disappointing to say the least.

I haven't heard Life in Technicolor yet, but I think Viva la Vida is even better than Violet Hill, and the acoustic version of Lost is great, and I think that song will even better with the whole band on the album.

That's pretty much how I figured it would be on these boards...I really enjoy Coldplay, and think they are a talented group of guys. When I saw them live I liked them even more.

But I can also see why people love to trash on them, one of friends at work refers to them as a "poor man's radiohead." I dunno...I think Rush of Blood to the Head is still their best work, but it's always interesting when a band tries new things or heads in a different direction.

This album's leaked. I think it's really good, but different for Coldplay. The only songs I'm not crazy about are Reign of Love and Chinese Sleep Chant, and I can't say I love the production on Lost!. Other than that I think it's a solid cd that will definately grow on me more as all of their other cds have.
My favorite songs are Cemetaries of London, 42, Lovers in Japan, Viva la Vida, and Death and all his Friends/The Escapist.

The new album sounds amazing so far. I'll be seeing 'em in Orlando this November.

I thought we were at a point were pretty much everyone hates them?

That logic is refuted by enormous ticket sales. Try getting decent seats at one of their concerts before it sells out and you'll see what I mean.

I don't think anyone doubts they have a large fanbase, but remember, there was a time when Billy Ray Cyrus sold out huge arenas.

So even though sales are good doesn't mean there isn't a larger sense of disdain against them.

heard the album today and have to say i was extremely underwhelmed,so many tracks just sound like other bands.
track 1 is oasis and not even good oasis which is'nt hard these days, track 2 and maybe as many as another 4 sound like embrace.
the rest are an assortmant of bands mentioned above with a bit of elbow and charlatans thrown in,i think coldplay have tried to sound a little more ballsey on this album but failed badly.
