Because I'm an absolute moron, when I had the chance to order phenomena online, i got the 86 minute legacy edition... I dont know how someone manages to cut 25 minutes out of an argento film and expect it to be watchable. So I probably have to buy that now, and Tenebre is my favorite but I have an old burned copy of it. Living Dead at Manchester Morgue came out last week and I'm trying to get ahold of that instead.

I hear you the 25 min cut version is called "creepers" I see that all over the place for like 5 bucks but I can never watch an edited argento film.
I bought both films for like 85 dollars used a few years ago. The original anchorbay OOP release. I will double dip but no way in fucking hell I will get rid of the OOP versions i own they are rare!!!

Bird With The Crystal Plumage is his only great film, Sleepless is pretty damn entertaining too. His late 70s/80s stuff generally looks fantastic, Opera remains one of the most visually stunning films I've ever seen but when it comes to directing his actors he fails miserably and they end up really dragging the films down.

Crystal Plumage and Deep Red are very similair, and I think Deep Red is a looot better. Actually I dont get why Crystal Plumage is considered such a great movie, sure its his first giallo but if that can get a criterion release(which it doesnt deserve) I think Deep Red should too.

his last film 'Mother of Tears' is terrible.
he is no longer a force in the horror cinema.Except the wonderful opening/train secene in 'Sleepless',what has he done recently memorable in the last 10 years or more?
Suspiria is a masterpiece.A summit in Horror cinema.I have great respect for this italian master.he was lonely in his art when he was in his prime but now?....

I'm happy he's still doing what he's always done and that's make somewhat cheap , surreal , sometimes cheesy , but always interesting horror films like nobody else can .
Even if some people may think the quality of his films has diminished sonce the late 80s , he's still an active link to the golden age of horror , much like GR is , and they haven't changed to suit anyone's needs , and i would never want them too . Argento is someone who still makes the films he wants to make , he's not looking to pander or be everyone's friend , he has his vision and he sticks with it .
MOT may not be on the same level as Suspiria and Inferno , but it's a welcome throwback to cheap Italian horror films of the past . I was entertained by it , and a big part of that reason was because it looked and felt like it was made in the early 80s , i loved it .
I don't want to see him " evolve " to keep up with the times and to try to outdo the current crop of horror hotshots , i want him to do his own thing , and he delivered the goods with MOT . It's an Argento film through and through . Nobody else could have made a film like this , and i'm glad he's still willing to make movies .

Are you fucking kidding me? Mother of Tears was crap, total crap. Unlike Diary where there was some debate over how much it fucking sucked, MOT just fucking SUCKS. I have never been so pissed off at fucking garbage. It took me 3 days to get through it and I still have 5 minutes left, its crap. In the past its been cheesy yes, its been over the top, yes. It did not have dumb ghost form Daria, it was not a self parody. This movie was making fun of itself, it was terrible. Great job with the mascara too, made the witches look reeeal evil, about as original as a scar on Anakins eye, thats how you signify evil. I'm done with Dario Argento movies, hes lost it, I'm giving Romero one more shot, but no, Dario is DONE.
I can make the claim that Mother of Tears is the worst movie I have ever seen.

The evil monkey is the only good thing about MoT :D
What was so bad about Diary ? I thought it was pretty darn good.

that was an immature comeback. regardless of whether he tried something different or not, he made a bad film. he made a movie that borders a self parody of the genre he created. he couldve put in fast zombies, if the movie was better i wouldnt care.
but tell me guys, are we really worth saving? man thats fucking deep.
[rec] played the same (media related) social commentary as diary except it didnt force it on me. it made intelligent little jabs vs 'AHHH! FUCK THE MEDIA!'
when i say a movie is good, id like to not be able to laugh at it. but even worse, a lot of the laughter was subdued once i realized how low romero has gone. the only movies to ever piss me off as much as diary, were la terza madre and die hard 4. troll is gold compared to this shit.

It wasn't a comeback , it was a response to 1000 , take from it what you will .

so... your one of 'those people'.... I hated Jenifer.
Ive always felt like Argento was a hack, but these last few films have assured me I'm right. Like I said, Ill give Romero one more shot but Argento is dead to me.

Then you must really love Two Evil Eyes :)
A friend of mine calls him Borio, and I agree wholeheartedly. I've tried and tried, so many times over the years, but I just don't get it. But hell, let him make movies forever, as long as I don't have to watch them.

I really loved Suspiria and Inferno - I also really enjoyed Jenifer (Just watched that the other night). Anyway, Argento's movies do seem to drag somewhat, but they're well crafted, and make you think, so though there's a certain dragginess, I can excuse that, because the dragginess is somewhat like an effect for his films.

I'm a fan of Argento though, I dont know how much writing he did for Once upon a time in the West but thats one of my top 5. And I love all his movies from Crystal Plumage to Opera.
Except two evil eyes... My Blue-Underground catalog that came with Living Dead at Manchester Morgue says its out of print... And I think thats their most recent catalog.

Sorry to disappoint you but I did enjoy his two MOH episodes. But after Mother of Tears It's going to be hard for me to like anything new of his, again. Can say the same thing about Romero after Diary.
Retirement? Yes.

As for the box set, I already got most of whatīs included in good DVD versions so I`ll skip it but I hope they do a single release of Aura and The Card Player eventually, Iīd pick them up for sure since there arenīt any really good DVD representations of either flick at this point (that I`m aware of).

Dario's films are visually stunning but are let downs in acting.
His greatest creation was Asia Argento also visually stunning.

LOL. I'm an Argento fan and believe me... Phenomena is barely cohersive in the FULL LENGTH cut so I really feel for you.

Sorry to bump an old thread guys, but I didn't want to start a new one just for this.
I'm trying to decide what Argento movie I want to get next and can't decide between Opera and Cat O' Nine Tails. Any opinions on either?
For the record, I already have:
- Suspiria
- Deep Red
- Tenebre
- Phenomena
- Trauma
- Card Player
- Do You Like Hitchcock?
My faves are his giallo stuff, so Deep Red and Tenebre are my personal faves from what I've seen, and I believe both Opera and Cat O' Nine Tails are considered giallo as well.

You really can't go wrong with either. Opera has more horror than Cat from what i remember...Cat is significantly more a giallo. Opera i feel has an ending which i felt should have stopped much earlier (the last location seems like an afterthought). I'd say probably get Opera because i like it better than Cat, but as i said, you wont be disapointed with any. I've got to mention though the Bird with the Crystal Plummage....i don't see it on your list?! Definatly grab that one if you can, it's one of Argento's best (and his first!).

Thanks for the advice. I'm leaning towards getting Opera first and Cat later on down the line.
As for Bird with the Crystal Plumage, none of the Canadian online stores I shop at seem to have it in stock right now, so that's why I didn't include it. I believe Blue Underground is going to be releasing a Blu-ray for that as well, so I may just wait to see how much that is before tracking down the DVD.
